To ask what make up you loved in the 90s

I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip this afternoon after finding a stub of MAC Viva Glam (the first iteration) which I bought from Harvey Nichols in 1994 (amazingly it still smells fine and applies just like it did 26 years ago). I bought it from one of my first pay packets and went on a waiting list to get it. I also remember being on a waiting list for ALL the Hard Candy pastel nail polishes a couple of years later - £12 a pop and I bought five or six! Also waiting list for Chanel Rouge Noir - took months to get my hands on it and in the meantime I mixed black and red nail polish which resulted in a lovely streaky mess 😂

At the start of the 90s I was a sort of goth/Manic Street Preachers fan hybrid so lots of smudged black eyeliner and red lips and glitter for nights out. Mid 90s I was Courtney Love obsessed with hair, clothes and makeup to match. Towards the end of the decade it was all MAC Spice lipliner and Carmex with shimmery eyeshadow. And for all of it, skinny perma-surprised brows which never grew back.

What were your favourite looks/fondly remembered but long gone 90s beauty staples?

I loved all the Ruby and Millie stuff, the packaging was a joy in itself.

I still have a couple of Ruby and Millie brushes, they have been used regularly for over 20 years and are like new.

AlexDrake1981 · 20/08/2020 20:48

@AriesTheRam

I'm really, really tempted. It's lovely isn't it.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 20/08/2020 20:53

Oh God yes, the Body Shop was so good in its day,

Dewberry,
White Musk,
Satsuma,
Bath pearls (slippy, slimy fuckers that stained the bath and stuck to your arse)
The bronzing pearls (the teenagers‘ budget version of Guerlain’s bronzing meteriorites)
The tiny animal soaps.
The makeup used to be good too but it was a bit too expensive for my teenaged pocket.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 20/08/2020 20:55

Yes, Ruby and Millie felt like a real treat, @isabellerossignol

JonHammIsMyJamm · 20/08/2020 20:56

Oh and I had a REALLY frosted 17 lipstick too, made me look dead. Not good

Derekhello · 20/08/2020 20:57

@formerbabe

I used to buy these packets from the chemist called Liptips...there were six or so in a pack and looked like cotton buds but instead of cotton wool on the end there was lipstick...does anyone remember them?
Yes! I’d forgotten all about them
isabellerossignol · 20/08/2020 20:58

Did anyone else order from the Club de Createurs de Beauté? I ordered loads of Agnes B makeup. There was a great peach coloured tinted moisturiser that was great for pale people like me as it didn't go streaky and orange like tan tinted moisturiser.

AriesTheRam · 20/08/2020 20:59

@AlexDrake1981 yes I just wear a couple of squirts on a night out

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 20/08/2020 20:59

Alex- make sure you get an original or vintage one. Poison has been reformulated post 1993. (Iirc)

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 20/08/2020 20:59

Rimmel Hide The Blemish
Rimmel Heather Shimmer lipstick
Body Shop lip balms

LunaNorth · 20/08/2020 21:02

I use to like Juicy Tubes lip gloss. I can still taste the watermelon one.

Spied · 20/08/2020 21:02

No17 dragons blood nail varnish.
Sensiq beige eyeshadow.
Loved No17 Twilight teaser lipstick.
2000 calorie mascara by Max Factor.
Revlon Colourstay foundation.
Loreal jet set lipglosses.
Loved a blue Boujours lipstick.
Late 90s I started wearing Lancome photogenic and using Clarins beauty flash.
Pupa lipgloss was also amazing and I was obsessed with the blue little angel glosses that they sold in Fenwick.

I wore Monsoon blue lagoon and Ananya mostly and I loved getting all the perfume minis in a box in Boots for Christmas.
I remember mini bottles of 'All about Eve' , Amirage, Les Belle's, Hugo, Yatis, Cerutti 1881 and Dune.
I remember getting a bottle of Gorgio BH Ocean Dream one Christmas and I felt so sophisticated.

ageingdisgracefully · 20/08/2020 21:02

Rouge Noir nail varnish.
Matching Chanel lipliner.
Chanel 5 or a power perfume such as Eternity or Opium.
Panstik foundation.
Creme Puff powder.

Loved the 90s.

noodlezoodle · 20/08/2020 21:04

What a lovely thread. Having an intense rush of nostalgia at the Papier Poudre - why don't they make that any more?!

Another vote for Black Cherries lipstick. Also Natural Collection clear mascara and Clinique Happy perfume.

I loved Rouge Noir nail varnish and have never stopped loving it, in fact I wore it on my wedding day. Might have to go and paint my nails!

isabellerossignol · 20/08/2020 21:06

I was very fond of Aqua de Gio perfume. I think if I smelt it now it would probably make me cry as the memory would be so overwhelming.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 20/08/2020 21:06

Also used to love Impulse body sprays, o2 and vanilla kisses beingmy favourites.
When I was 13 I bought a fake bottle of Tommy Girl perfume from the market. It did NOT smell authentic.

MobLife · 20/08/2020 21:07

Does anyone remember a range of makeup called RU? It would have been at Superdrug I think in around 1995 and they had some great punky colours

Collection 2000 lipsticks and Tommy Girl perfume
I remember getting a sample of the fragrance worn by Take That in Shout magazine circa 1994 and I thought I was absolutely as cool as fuck putting it on 😆
Good times!

MyCatHatesEverybody · 20/08/2020 21:10

I used to love a lipstick from Avon where the lid kind of slid to the side as you pushed the lipstick up... I think it was called pop top and the tube was bright yellow? I had a shade called toffee pop iirc.

On the flip side what I remember as being proper shit was a wash in wash out hair colour that came in an individual sachet similar in size to an options hot chocolate, I think they were called Shaders. I remember sitting in the bath for ages waiting for the colour to take and of course it never did.

Naticus · 20/08/2020 21:11

Heather shimmer or coffee shimmer lippie, brown eyeshadow and brown/Black mascara.

Impulse o2 body spray.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 20/08/2020 21:12

Chunky plimsoles from Dolcis

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 20/08/2020 21:13

So much glitter!

Loved ruby and millie and bloom - does anyone remember that one?

Benetton Hot and Cold perfume

justasking111 · 20/08/2020 21:14

A friend and I both wore poison or Giorgio, we could knock out a room full of people if we arrived together Grin

The lipstick I seem to recall was Rose in Gold rimmel. Loved that a deep colour with gold flecks. Sad when it was discontinued.

wingingmywaythroughlife · 20/08/2020 21:14

@SillyUnMurphy

Miss Selfridge make up. Hard Candy nail polish. I went to the US for the first time in 1996 and I couldn’t believe how amazing Maybelline was over there. Of course Rimmel Heather Shimmer and Birthday Suit. Hair mascara (remember that?!) Late 90s; I loved Urban Decay - I still love it but late 90s/early 2000s was its boom for me.
Rimmel Birthday Suit! Was wracking my brains trying to remember the name of it, thanks Grin
timesareachanging · 20/08/2020 21:14

Gutted to learn that Bourjois isn’t being sold in the UK.

Used it since I was a teen in the 90s
