I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip this afternoon after finding a stub of MAC Viva Glam (the first iteration) which I bought from Harvey Nichols in 1994 (amazingly it still smells fine and applies just like it did 26 years ago). I bought it from one of my first pay packets and went on a waiting list to get it. I also remember being on a waiting list for ALL the Hard Candy pastel nail polishes a couple of years later - £12 a pop and I bought five or six! Also waiting list for Chanel Rouge Noir - took months to get my hands on it and in the meantime I mixed black and red nail polish which resulted in a lovely streaky mess 😂

At the start of the 90s I was a sort of goth/Manic Street Preachers fan hybrid so lots of smudged black eyeliner and red lips and glitter for nights out. Mid 90s I was Courtney Love obsessed with hair, clothes and makeup to match. Towards the end of the decade it was all MAC Spice lipliner and Carmex with shimmery eyeshadow. And for all of it, skinny perma-surprised brows which never grew back.

What were your favourite looks/fondly remembered but long gone 90s beauty staples?

Stargazer or Barry M everything & black cherries Rimmel lipstick!

Later I loved Illamasqua.

Nursejackie1 · 20/08/2020 18:23

Pale lips with dark brown eyeliner as lip liner-heavily applied!
I loved earth star by rimmel lipstick but also sometimes used concealer instead.

ILoveFlumps · 20/08/2020 18:29

Ooh great thread OP!

For me:

Heather Shimmer, Tribe perfume, impulse O2 body spray, Dewberry from Body Shop, an electric blue mascara, blonde hair streaks (sadly!), Sun In, the semi permanent hair dyes that came in a triangular box, Finesse Shampoo and Conditioner, Hot oil hair treatment thingies, yes to the Spectacular Nail varnishes, Rimmel pressed powder (lots of) but you could buy compact holders for them that were pretty so we would pop them out into those.

Going to rack my brains for more now!

Footlooseandfancy · 20/08/2020 18:32

I had a dark berry lipstick from the Body Shop that I thought was super cool
Dewberry shower gel
Impulse body spray with Charlie perfume
Loads of glitter
Sparkly eyeshadow all over the eyelid

CaffiSaliMali · 20/08/2020 18:36

I used to love my Mam's rum and raisin lipstick - she used to let me wear some from time to time.

At school discos in the late 90s we wore hair mascara, blue mascara mascara and lots of glitter all down our arms and by our arms. Oh and glitter hairspray! My Mam hated it washing all the glitter out of my hair.

I loved anything dewberry scented. Can you still get Dewberry scented stuff?

EastBoundAndDown · 20/08/2020 18:37

Yes! I loved Heather Shimmer too.
I had a few bits of Miners Makeup ( remember that?) one was a mini size blue lipstick.
The Body Shop pink grapefruit shower gel and bath pearls!

CarlottaValdez · 20/08/2020 18:40

Stargazer definitely! We used to buy blue or silver nail varnish from a little shop that sold crystals and incense and things. It was really expensive!

Yes to black cherries lipstick- had that. I had a light blue lipstick but can’t remember the brand, maybe stargazer.

I got Chanel rouge noir nail varnish for my Christmas maybe 1996. Was so fucking happy with it! I remember staying up painting my nails that night and then being afraid to go to bed in case I smudged them.

PennyDreadfuI · 20/08/2020 18:42

Kate Beckinsale was one of my 90s makeup inspirations. And all the goths and riot grrrls and Drew Barrymore. It's Drew I have to thank for my ridiculous eyebrows!

Miss Selfridge make up. Hard Candy nail polish. I went to the US for the first time in 1996 and I couldn’t believe how amazing Maybelline was over there. Of course Rimmel Heather Shimmer and Birthday Suit. Hair mascara (remember that?!) Late 90s; I loved Urban Decay - I still love it but late 90s/early 2000s was its boom for me.

KingFredsTache · 20/08/2020 18:46

Heather Shimmer and Coffee Shimmer lipstick, I also had a Collection 2000 lipstick that I got free with a magazine that was quite similar to Heather Shimmer that I loved.

I had one of those foldout makeup sets from Argos which was the bollocks.

Natural Collection from Boots, I had an awesome palette of lipsticks, and I loved their peach lip balm as well.

Also, more early 00s than 90s but Lancome Juicy Tubes and also those YSL lip glosses that had a clicker on the end to dispense the product. Benefit High Beam. And Ruby and Millie - what happened to them? Sad

I think I had that same lipstick! I’m sure it was from Shout magazine. I absolutely loved it!

Cam2020 · 20/08/2020 18:48

I loved Heather Shimmer! By the mid 90s, I used to spend my pocket money on the Chanel Hydra Soleil lipsticks and late 90s it was all about Rogue Noir.

Penny I Ioved Deci Dela! The bottle was so quirky!

Cam2020 · 20/08/2020 18:49

rouge Blush

NameChange84 · 20/08/2020 18:49

Hair mascara
Lancôme Juicy Tubes
Exclamation, So, Charlie Blue, CK1, Hugo Boss, Versace Blue/Red/Baby Pink, Cerruti, Tommy Girl, Davidoff Coolwater, Sunflowers
Clear Complexion Powder (that was probably anything but!)
Nivea Rosè Lipbalm which tasted sickly sweet and had a subtle shimmer. Boots natural collections did similar berry flavoured tinted lipbalms
Clear Mascara

The smell of biore skin care and tea tree takes me back to those days

And Impulse O2

KingFredsTache · 20/08/2020 18:51

Oh yeah the Maybelline mascara in the pink and green tube was hailed as the Messiah of mascaras in the 90s! I remember going to America in the mid 90s and it was everywhere!

I wanted a Hard Candy nail polish but it was too expensive. I do remember another brand of nail polish, they did tonnes of colours, I'm sure it was had writing in black in a diagonal across the front but I can't remember what it was called! I'm sure they sold it in Topshop in Oxford Circus!

TheCatsWhisker · 20/08/2020 18:52

Sun In hair bleach spray, because everyone wants weird crispy hair right? In a colour nobody in their right mind would choose Grin

LazyDaisy10 · 20/08/2020 18:52

Rimmel Asia lipstick
Tommy girl perfume
Bath pearls from body shop

AlexDrake1981 · 20/08/2020 18:52

Not makeup, but I loved (still do) Poison by Dior. I was contemplating buying a bottle a few weeks go, but chickened out as it really is strong stuff. Just one whiff, and it takes me right back Smile

thepointoforder · 20/08/2020 18:52

I entered a competition in J17 or one of the late 90's magazines. About a month later a huge box arrived full of spectacular make up - it was about £250 and there was So Much Stuff.

It was like Mary Poppins' bag, it just kept coming out of this box. Still the most exciting day of my life.

I liked the Rocky Horror limited edition spectacular nail varnish the best. They were mixed glitter, named after each character.

Aside from that, hard candy, mac spice, impulse o2, silver eyeliner and a liquid highlighter by Lancome were all my staples.

Perfume was exclamation, Calvin Klein ck!, tribe, new west, so? And les belles des Ricci

KingFredsTache · 20/08/2020 18:52

Yes, I think it was Shout magazine come to think of it! 😂

KingFredsTache · 20/08/2020 18:54

Omg Spectacular nail varnish is the one I was trying to think of in my last post, thank you!

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 20/08/2020 18:57

Oh that’s reminded me - rum and raisin lip balm from the Bodyshop!

GuyFawkesDay · 20/08/2020 18:57

Juicy tubes are back!!

And in the original colours too 😁

A whole new generation can have their hair stick to their lips now 🤣

Cheesypea · 20/08/2020 19:00

I remember when rouge noir came out I was mad on it. Couldn't afford the real thing (chanel) so made do with the knock off version by m&s.

SillyUnMurphy · 20/08/2020 19:00

Does anyone also remember the Urban Decay honey flavoured sparkly body powder. I used to cover myself in it, even though I was like 15 and had no one to lick it off 🤣
