DH asked me what do cows eat. AIBU to divorce him immediately?

We were watching a program about a fancy hotel where they have their own cows. There was a clip of the cows being hand fed apples.

DH exclaimed in surprise ‘I didn’t know cows eat apples!’ He then paused and said, ‘What DO cows eat?’ whilst looking genuinely puzzled.

I said to him what do you think they do all day in the fields? They eat grass/hay etc, how do you not know this? DH then shrugged and said he’d never really thought about it.

He is a well educated intelligent man in his 40s. We also grew up/live in a place where dairy production accounts for a large percent of the export, so it’s not like he’s never seen a cow in a field or on a farm before.

I am aghast. AIBU to divorce him immediately? I really can’t see any other option to be honest

Just remembered when we went to Snowdonia on a whim one New Year's Eve and the mountains all looked the same. We saw a passerby and DH stopped the car and told me to ask him, 'Which one is Ben Nevis?' Blush

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/08/2020 19:41

I've just remembered somebody at university arguing with me that I couldn't be cooking neck of lamb "because sheep don't have necks".

msflibble · 22/08/2020 19:42

Bless him. I had an ex who didn't understand that each baby born was 50% mum and 50% dad - he was thrown off by patrilineal naming conventions. The same guy thought if you kept your store bought eggs in a warm place, they'd hatch into chicks!

Oh yes didn’t you know? Most dairy farmers have an excellent side line selling ivory on the black market. Well, when we’re not using it to build towers to look down on the peasants! 😂

“So really it’s breeding them to kill them because we like the flavour. It’s not really a morally justifiable stance, is it?”

Well in your opinion...but as there’s no universal moral code, it’s all a bit subjective really...

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 22/08/2020 20:32

You are allowed to say you don’t believe me. You are allowed to say you think I’m lying. You don’t get to outright tell me that I am when you have absolutely no idea if that is the case or not.

Erm, I think you’ll find that I already have. You’re a liar. Your cows will cry for their calves. Your calves will cry for their mother.

Do be careful of your blood pressure, you sound a bit worked up. Wink

This thread certainly got high jacked.
borntobequiet · 22/08/2020 20:38

The farmer next to where I live - who is an excellent farmer, and cares greatly for his animals’ welfare - removes the calves from his pedigree beef herd in July/August. The cries of the mothers and calves are heartrending (even though they appear to be separated incrementally). Unfortunately this coincides with my birthday, and it makes me feel sad.

Maybe because they call farmers out on their lies. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I accept people eat meat, I’ve said here that my partner and kids eat meat. And that means farming is necessary, but no one is going to say that cows do not cry for their calves and me not say that that is a complete lie. If that means some people don’t like me....well.... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Definitely. It started as a lighthearted thread, but got hijacked by vegans.

Not the farmers and their lies? No let’s blame the pesky vegans and them telling the truth about farming. That’s much easier...🙄

PermaStress · 22/08/2020 20:55

I know several vegans who can't stand vegans Grin

VampireBill · 22/08/2020 21:01

Calves are not allowed mums milk because

... a lot of people can't /can't be bothered to feed their offspring and want to buy baby formula.

Mittens030869 · 22/08/2020 21:35

My point is that it was a light-hearted thread originally. Maybe it got hijacked by vegans and lying farmers. (I have no experience of farming so I can't comment on that aspect of the debate.)

It's a shame, whoever was to blame, as it was a humorous thread before that.

KarmaStar · 22/08/2020 21:47

Appreciate this is light hearted but divorce is very painful for many people and bandying the word around can be a trigger.

derxa · 22/08/2020 21:56

lying farmers Ha ha ha

ClaraJude · 22/08/2020 22:01

Not sure that’s strictly fair. As far as I can see from re-reading it the vegans only got involved once the farmers had started commenting about calves, milk and cows. Both groups contributed equally to it becoming a thread about dairy farming.

(I know IABU to think people would ever choose to blame a different group when they have the opportunity to criticise vegans Grin)

Anyway - afaic a thread can have more than one purpose. The farmers can say their bit, the vegans can say theirs, and there’s still space for the people who want to post the lighthearted stuff.

I really wanted farmers to tell us about their fascinating lives , this is why they have such a difficult time reaching out us to educate us . Some people want to disrupt the communication line between us .Thank you for getting out there every day and providing us with world class produce x

Have you ever considered educating yourself from an unbiased source - perhaps one which isn’t financially dependent on you believing their version of events...?

I understand that divorce can be a painful experience for a lot of people, I remember supporting my DSis through a very painful divorce from her abusive ex.

Maybe the thread title was insensitive. But clearly the OP wasn't being serious about divorcing her DH, she was simply posting what she meant to be a lighthearted thread at his expense.
