Do you have anything made in the USA

Apple products are “assembled” in China (as the label on the back tells you) but the components come from all over the world including a decent proportion from the US.

cakewench · 17/08/2020 10:09

My Nordicware and All-Clad pans. And Kitchenaid of course.

Though I’m from the US and do visit more often than most here I suppose.

oldmapie · 17/08/2020 10:12

Boycotting USA? Hell no!
Show me a country that hasn't had unscrupulous employers which f**k on human rights! Look at all the shite from China. I mean their human rights record are just awesome....disagree with someone over there and that person just goes 'poff' and disappear never to be seen again.
Closer to home, what about most of our factory workers, textiles in particular still seems draconian towards employees.
Anyway back to the point, yes I buy stuff off amazon and eBay which has been made in the USA. mainly Betty Crocker cookware, but I have a lovely llbean winter coat (most expensive item of clothing I own) but six years on its still completely waterproof and wind proof.
I also have a fine collection of USA fabrics!
Then again I'm quite pro USA. Yes they have major issues, but what country doesn't?

LakieLady · 17/08/2020 10:13

I have a sweatshirt from American Apparel bought before the sex abuse scandal.

It must be about 15 years old now but is still almost as good as new and is just slightly less fluffy inside. I think it will outlive me. I had a great pair of jeans from there too, but gave them to my mate when I "outgrew" them.

I don't know if there's anything else from the US, certainly haven't knowingly bought anything made there since they elected Trump.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/08/2020 10:23

@MillicentMartha

I worry that chlorinated chicken will be in my takeaway curry, KFC and other restaurant food. But I won’t be boycotting US products in general. Hmm
I don't eat those things now anyway. It won't be a great loss.
BadLad · 17/08/2020 10:27

There's an online clothing store I use which sells made-to-order clothes, made in the USA. I spend quite a lot there.

Apart from that, not much, I don't think. Not deliberately avoiding it, but everything seems to be in China, Japan or elsewhere in the Far East.

BikeRunSki · 17/08/2020 10:43

A hunt around has revealed Carola crayons, Burts Bees lipsalve and New Balance trainers (there was me thinking they were made in Cumbria).

LakieLady · 17/08/2020 11:17

Mention of Burt's Bees made me go and look at my O'Keeffe's dry skin cream, and it's made in the US..... off to Style & Beauty to see if anyone can recommend an alternative.

Mominatrix · 17/08/2020 11:19

Going back to the chlorinated chicken - is the concern the chlorine or something else.

Concern over chlorinated chicken should have nothing to do with the technique of chlorinating the chicken, which, if the chicken is cooked properly, is a non-issue. The concern is the fact that it is used to try and make up for dire animal welfare used in raising said chicken, which is a very valid concern and which can be sidestepped by buying high welfare chicken.

If your concern is chlorinated chicken populating KFC and other fast food outlets, I think that you have your worries warped as these places do and will buy poor welfare chicken as a business model anyways to keep cost down.

Bwlch · 17/08/2020 11:46

Going back to the chlorinated chicken - is the concern the chlorine or something else.

The concern is that the chlorine, although harmless in itself, is being used to mask general poor hygiene and animal welfare practices.

LightDrizzle · 17/08/2020 11:52

Kitchenaid food processor and stand mixer
Cross fountain pen
A lightweight clip-on UV easel umbrella
A Guerrilla Box pochade
Apple stuff
Old Converse
Vans

fodderbeet · 17/08/2020 11:56

Some stuff bought in the US, although I suspect that a good part of it was probably manufactured in China. I bit of context would be handy, are you talking trade deals? Food? Manufacturing? Cotton from US going to china and then here? And why the poll?

FilledSoda · 17/08/2020 12:00

Why?

LagunaBubbles · 17/08/2020 12:04

Why are people answering this when its such a deliberately vague post as to why they are asking?

AnnieOH1 · 17/08/2020 12:10

Aside from things I've bought there or deliberately imported, I have a number of products made in the US. Most recently I sat looking at 3 different paper reams in Tesco iirc, I went for the brand from US forest for no other reason than that. It helped make the choice (rightly or wrongly).

Dunno about anyone else, but I'm half expecting it to end up in an online newspaper, and I'm interested to see if my old book makes it in Grin

HoldMyLobster · 17/08/2020 13:13

If you’ve had a COVID test it’s likely the swab used was made in the US.

I have a dog and two cats all made in the US. They do seem slightly defective.

NewPapaGuinea · 17/08/2020 13:23

Apple Mac Pros are made in USA.

For me, the only thing that springs to mind is a "Made in USA" leaf blower.

botswanabanana · 17/08/2020 15:23

Hmm, sitting here avidly scribbling down every scintillating response for what would be an incredibly shit newspaper article vs. not caring that much and not actually remembering why I asked (plus being vaguely amused at some of the uppity posters) - wonder which one I am right now.

I was genuinely interested at the time!

Does a husband count?

LucilleBluth · 17/08/2020 15:31

Loads, from holidaying there and from Costco.

Laaalaaaa · 17/08/2020 15:34

A Louis Vuitton handbag and probably plenty of other things, I don’t tend to check the ‘made in’ info on things I buy.

safariboot · 17/08/2020 15:40

Almost certainly, but no idea what. That's globalisation for you. The final assembly might be "Made in China" but that doesn't mean everything from mine to product was made there.

yeah, act disinterested now, just because you got called out by a number of posters on here.... Hmm

@VenusOfWillendorf

What's the AIBU? Did you mean to post this in Chat?
I wondered this. You come off as a market researcher, OP. Why do you want to know?
