To be bloody fed up and ready to go home!

As is the case for many, we have missed out on a few holidays this year.
Our final holiday - a week in our caravan in Wales - was not cancelled and the thought of it has kept me going. I actually extended the 7 nights to 12!
Well we are here. The weather is shocking and is for the foreseeable. Thoughts of lazy days on the beach have not come to fruition. Instead, I am working incredibly hard to make it fun for everyone (Including two teens!) by planning outings in torrential rain (and all indoor activities are closed!) We are on the campsite next to the noisiest group of people who think playing music, swearing and shouting until 1am is acceptable!
I know I should be grateful that we have a holiday at all but it would be much easier to just go home and relax!! Obviously, I won’t but I want to!!
**@HexyAndIKnowIt at the moment it's not possible to "just go for a wander round a museum" is it?

Yes holidays are what you make them and normally me and DH usually enjoy our holidays no matter what the weather. That is because we can go to museums, art galleries, castles etc. Not easy at present when everything (if even open) has to be pre-booked
According to Visit Anglesea the museum is open for visitors 10-5pm without pre booking so yes, it's possible.

Teens are strange. We had a hideous week camping in Cornwall (in a tent, not caravan), and it pissed down the entire week, and was bloody chilly, despite being August.

Our girls remember it fondly, despite being a pain in the arse most of the week. They rarely mention Spain, Turkey, New York .... but the wet week in Cornwall is regularly talked about.

daisydalrymple · 17/08/2020 12:53

I live in North Wales. It’s a 20 min drive to be on Anglesey. We’ve had fabulous weather all lockdown, just the odd patch of rain here and there. Really sad to see some of these posts Wales bashing. It actually doesn’t rain here ‘all the time’. And it does rain elsewhere too.

Sorry you’re not having a great time on Anglesey OP.

ShastaBeast · 17/08/2020 13:08

We were in Snowdonia last week and it was great. But I wasn’t expecting much to be open and didn’t care if it rained as I enjoy driving around and the landscapes. Ok the kids don’t agree but we forced them out and they enjoyed it anyway.

An expensive option but I really recommend zipworld. If it’s going to rain the slate cavern one is a good idea. We took raincoats but were lucky it didn’t rain as much as forecast. Walking in Forrest areas is good as it reduced the rain.

Luckily no noisy neighbours but I use ear plugs anyway - noisy neighbours at home unfortunately.

EnidPrunehat · 17/08/2020 13:31

I'm normally one for sticking things out and certainly when I had teens I was always surprised at just how much they'd enjoyed holidays which I thought had gone pear-shaped. They're in their 30s now and merrily recount tales from these trips.

But this year is different. Most holiday destinations in the UK are either full of people who don't want to be there/seem surprised that most things to do are closed/amazed that the weather is behaving typically. It's like living in an infectious version of Early Closing Day. Or the 1960s as my ds observed the other week. Worse, every sodding camp site is crammed to the gills with people who don't really want to be there either. Oh, and cohorts of people who seem to think Covid-19 is only contagious at home thus there's buggerall need to observe any social distance.

Unless I lived in the grimmest of places with absolutely no access to the countryside or sea I'd stay home. If the weather was reliably forecast to be shit I'd go home. This isn't 2019. Nothing is even vaguely as it was.

mum11970 · 17/08/2020 14:05

Nothing worse than missing the good weather by a week, last week was great. I’d be thoroughly pee’d off too. I’m on the mainland and just having a bath after getting drench whilst out on my bike today. Tomorrow should be dry and then a little showery most days. What kind of age are your children and are you happy to travel off the island for things to do?

maddening · 17/08/2020 14:27

Yes zip world is good, they have bounce below also.

Caernarfon is just over the bridge and that has nice restaurants etc. Benllech has an amazing little restaurant at one end of the beach.

If the rain eases there are some nice coastal walks.

PhilCornwall1 · 17/08/2020 16:16

It brightened up here for a couple of hours, so went for a walk. It started to hammer down again, most people had left the beaches. We drove past one and there was a family (only people on the beach) sat in chairs all looking miserable with coats on and hoods up, but weren't going to move. That's not a holiday, couldn't understand why they didn't bail and get back to somewhere dry.

Glad to be staycationing or whatever they call it. Home, dry with a large glass of wine. Sorted!!

Waytoomuch82 · 17/08/2020 16:40

I am here now... coastal town in Kent.

Beautifully sunny... at 4.45, my children in swim shorts, me in shorts, the sand is beautifully warm! Planning pizza on the beach tonight.

It’s why I won’t ever venture north of the M25 in summer.

In winter, perhaps, simply because weather expectations are low anywhere really.

Whereas summer, no bloody way am I risking precious holiday in rain shorts

Waytoomuch82 · 17/08/2020 16:44

This is where I’m at! Grin

SerenDippitty · 17/08/2020 17:28

One of the reasons we always book a cottage when we go to the Isle of Skye. When (not if) the weather is crap we can stay indoors in privacy and comfort. Watch films and play scrabble in the evening. Have leisurely cooked breakfasts.

LittleHootie · 17/08/2020 17:49

Bless you OP. Why not head home and treat yourself to some takeaways etc?

I'm in a Northumberland caravan in the pissing down rain. But luckily the site has indoor fun for DC and the caravan is better equipped than my house.

I still wish the lovely weather had stuck around a bit longer. Oh well, maybe it has saved me from contracting covid from sunloving caravanners!! X

annie987 · 18/08/2020 06:11

We are heading home tomorrow. 9 days early and I can’t wait!
We come to Anglesey at least twice a year and have the most amazing times but, this time, I’m done!
After last nights karaoke party in the caravan next door, I am so excited to be heading home.

I know it’s great to channel Julie Andrews but a wet summer holiday is a challenge. When our kids tiny we went to Tenby in June and there was a heatwave. Such a fluke we had a fantastic week may as well have been in France. We can’t go back as would never be that lucky again!

My grandparents lived in north wales until I was 6 so we went often. Happy memories but most involve rain.

Woooooo! Enjoy your comfy bed and proper walls op.

FWIW, we had to do something like this a while ago. Arrived at the camp site to check in. The reception looked and smelt like a wetherspoons. The receptionist announced at check in that someone had just shat in the pool, so it was closed. We went to our mobile home and it was teeny tiny with mobile homes right on top of each other. Really cramped and dated. We had paid £500 and this wasn't even school holidays. We left almost immediately. We tried to upgrade upgrade would have paid more if it had been nice enough, but they were totally booked out. I'd honestly have been happy to lose the money, but they were really lovely at the chain's head office and refunded us. Best decision we ever made. We had a staycation in the house and did local days out. We had £500 spare tbf!

My policy since then has been the following; unless there is a really good reason to be somewhere, (the culture, a sight, activities or an event), if the accommodation isn't at least as nice as my house, I'm not going.

winewellies · 18/08/2020 10:45

We normally go camping but with all our booked trips cancelled this year we nipped off to a static in a holiday park , hot tub, pool lots to do etc etc was really looking forward to it - weather was fab !
I lost my rag on Day 3 of moaning teenagers missing their mates and having limited WiFi and everything was borrrring and DH who just 'relaxed' whilst I dealt with the offspring

We came home a night early and I cancelled the next weekend trip we had booked .. they're still muttering about my 'meltdown' now !

I feel your pain OP !!
Like others say if you can entertain/enjoy yourself and ignore the kids then crack on and stay , if it's all a bit pants then go

Big winds due in parts of Wales from tomorrow too I think

EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling · 18/08/2020 11:06

I think it's the right decision to come home. Bit in my experience, Wales in late August was always going to be risky! We've never had a holiday in Wales where it hasn't rained at some point, sadly!

blue25 · 18/08/2020 11:25

We did our first UK holiday together this year & won’t be doing it again. Weather was too unreliable & TBH it was just a bit dull.

Will go back to holidays abroad as soon as we can!

OohKittens · 18/08/2020 11:33

I live in Pembrokeshire and I always question why everyone loves the place to holiday. Yes there are pretty beaches but that is it and only 2 have complete dog bans. There is nothing to do in the rain and it's just shit for a holiday Blush. I like living here because it's peaceful and a laid back way of life but it rains 80% of the time.

I can't wait. Seriously :(

SerenDippitty · 18/08/2020 11:40

We used to go to Tenby every year when I was a kid and although it must have rained at some point I only have memories of when it didn’t! Apart from one time we went to Saundersfoot for a change and it was a disaster. Non stop rain upset tummies the lot.

footprintsintheslow · 18/08/2020 11:41

Weather is lovely in Wales today if that helps?

DH and I went last year, about June from memory. We stayed at the bottom of the hill, specifically to use the park and ride bus that went up it into town. The park and ride bus didn't actually start until end of July, most of the shops in Tenby were shut by 4pm and the pubs didn't start serving food until at least 6pm. The static caravan was on a tilt so I felt like I was sleeping on my head (should have complained really). Anyway, we'd booked Monday to Friday and were home Wednesday night. We have now decided future UK breaks will be hotels only and in places that might actually be open.
OohKittens · 18/08/2020 12:04

@AdobeWanKenobi that really is shit but so typical of the place. It is hyped up as some amazing destination but it's basically mud, dog shit, rain and disappointment Grin

Graciebobcat · 18/08/2020 12:06

Pembrokeshire is beautiful. Some of the landscape is like Cornwall but it's much quieter and you are far less likely to encounter the tiresome home counties rah rah types you get in summer in Padstow and the like.
