To go on my own? Looser?

itsrainingandpouringgg · 15/08/2020 20:35

I'm in my 30s and I've never been anywhere on my own overnight.
I really want a night away somewhere.
I've never been to London in over 16 years.
I really want to go for 2 days /1 night and just do some sightseeing /shopping
Would I be a looser to go alone?
I've found a return fare from Newcastle for £30 and hotel for £59 (copthorne Tara)
Do I just go ?
Would you go?
Is this a bad time due to covid ?

Why do you think you'd be a loser to go somewhere on your own?

Ponoka7 · 15/08/2020 20:39

I go to London regularly on my own, from Liverpool. I go to the Theatre. London is the ideal place to go alone because no one would notice (not that it matters if they do, we don't have to be with someone).

I used to feel like you do, until I missed out on seeing someone live. He died before I found someone who would go with me. Then I vowed not to miss out again.

It's great, there's no compromising and you get to do exactly what you want.

BaconsLaw · 15/08/2020 20:40

I would love to do this.

NurseButtercup · 15/08/2020 20:40

Do it you'll enjoy yourself and you are not a loser.
I did the same when I went to see Les miserables, Hamilton and Alvin Ailey dance company at Sadlers Wells.

My friends refused to go with me and I didn't want to miss out.

I had a great time wandering around London by myself.

Do it.
The only drawback is the long train journey wearing a mask. I would make sure you have quite a few masks so that you can change them every couple of hours.

Apart from that, enjoy.

Do it! I often do weekends by myself!

SingToTheSky · 15/08/2020 20:42

I’m planning to do this once I’ve stopped feeding my youngest. I like going out alone and happily eat in restaurants, see films etc. I really want to stay somewhere for two nights and just enjoy having the whole day with zero demands on me!

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 15/08/2020 20:42

Go .go.go ! Don't worry what others think. Go and enjoy yourself. If you are not happy in your own company ????

AdoptedBumpkin · 15/08/2020 20:42

Do it, if you can't find anyone. Be a strong, independent woman and all that.

Merryoldgoat · 15/08/2020 20:42

That sounds fantastic.

Dozer · 15/08/2020 20:43

Great plan but if time/money allow would go for two nights as there’s loads to do and it’s a long train journey.

BananaPop2020 · 15/08/2020 20:44

I love doing things alone. I have been to NY, been to the cinema, been to restaurants....it is lovely being able to set your own timetable and do as you please.

BestOption · 15/08/2020 20:45

I wouldn't go now because of Covid, but various factors make me vulnerable and so I'd rather not take the risk, but your assessment might be different.

Pre Covid I lived, travelled & went into London on my own a lot. I actually prefer to do most things by myself because I like to do things spur of the moment or just 'as I please'. I like not having to worry if someone else is bored/hungry/tired etc.

The only thing I don't really enjoy is eating out in the evening by myself, so I don't. I arrange my plans differently 🤷🏻‍♀️

When you feel ready re Covid then get in, go by yourself & have a fabulous time!!

itsrainingandpouringgg · 15/08/2020 20:47

It's crag because I've been on lots of day trips alone
Leeds ,Manchester,Scotland etc
It's just the thought of staying alone overnight and things to do on the evening time.
I really want to push myself to do it.
I've saved a little bit of money during lockdown and I'm desperate for a mini break.

Strangely again I'm ok eating in cafes alone but not restaurants
It's totally stupid and I want to get out of it.

Please visit. London very quiet so ideal time. Free museums (pre book). Tara Copthorne near Kensington Palace and lots of places of interest within walking distance/short bus ride.

Dozer · 15/08/2020 20:54

In the evening(s) you can just chill out, have a walk, or have a drink somewhere, places much quieter than usual so you’ll have good choices.

beautifulxdisasters · 15/08/2020 20:55

Is it strangers opinions you're worried about or people you know?

I often went to London for work when I lived in Newcastle - I'd get the train down, eat in restaurants, stay in hotels by myself, sometimes go shopping in the evening by myself - nobody cares at all. I now live in London and sometimes I eat in restaurants alone just because.

You'll probably need to plan in advance re sightseeing as a lot of places are only taking advance bookings.

Dozer · 15/08/2020 20:57

I would go somewhere with a view for one posh cocktail! Or glass of wine in a courtyard.

beautifulxdisasters · 15/08/2020 20:57

I always take a book, or my phone with headphones and something to watch.

Loads of people eat alone if they're there for work, you won't be the only one! Smile

OhTheRoses · 15/08/2020 21:00

I go on business trips alone and often book into a hotel alone when I visit dd at uni. It's absolutely fine and eating alone is fine. I would go to the theatre or cinema in a heartbeat rather than miss out. It's chicken and egg isn't it. Going gives you something to talk about and helps with conversations and friends. Also London is divinely quiet at present and probably much safer than in February.

Go. Enjoy.

Palavah · 15/08/2020 21:00

Do it! For eating alone in restaurants I suggest taking a small notebook to doodle or jot in while you eat - or postcards to write - so you don't feel so self-conscious. Of course in some places you can just read a book.

nanbread · 15/08/2020 21:00

Do it! I quite like eating by myself when I've traveled for work alone, it's peaceful! You could always get room service and eat in bed watching TV.

I would be mindful that don't things may still not be open and you'll need to see wear masks in shops, places like museums and galleries, on transport etc and it can get quite oppressive especially in humid weather. Fine when it's nice enough to spend time outside though, that hotel's right by the park which is lovely.

OhTheRoses · 15/08/2020 21:02

Oh OP I once had a lovely meal alone in a Hotel in Newcastle - near the station. Newcastle blew me away btw. So beautiful.

Illegitiminoncarborundum · 15/08/2020 21:04

@itsrainingandpouringgg

I'm from Newcastle and often get the train down.

It's a lovely journey as it's direct and you'll love being in a new place!

Go for it
