To go on my own? Looser?

I'm in my 30s and I've never been anywhere on my own overnight.
I really want a night away somewhere.
I've never been to London in over 16 years.
I really want to go for 2 days /1 night and just do some sightseeing /shopping
Would I be a looser to go alone?
I've found a return fare from Newcastle for £30 and hotel for £59 (copthorne Tara)
Do I just go ?
Would you go?
Is this a bad time due to covid ?

I think it's sometimes better to go on your own. You can just see what you want to see and go to places you want to go, without worrying what any one else wants to do.

Trisolaris · 15/08/2020 21:10

I’ve stayed in hotels for weeks at a time with work.

Honestly it’s lovely!

When not at work you set your own agenda, use the facilities, go where you want without having to compromise.

I used to feel like you did but now I love going places alone!

CynsterBitch · 15/08/2020 21:14

I do lots of things on my own, either because my friends don’t have an interest in what I’m doing or because the just won’t commit to doing this. Just easier to do things myself.
I say go for it. Life is to short to worry about what other people think, have fun and enjoy yourself

Frankola · 15/08/2020 21:14

Oh do it!

I love travelling for work alone. I go for something nice to eat, hang out in the hotel room watching my own choice of programs, have a pamper and read my book.

I always make sure I give myself some time for sightseeing too.

Once you've braved it the first time you'll be addicted!

lovemelongtime · 15/08/2020 21:14

Honestly you'll be fine. I go quite a lot for work on my own and love it. Always have a lovely little shopping trip them go for a meal. If you feel uncomfortable stick to places that you can sit in the window and look out. Loads of places around Covent garden where you are fine on your own. Have fun, life is short.b

KarenFitzkaren · 15/08/2020 21:16

Do it. You'll love it. And it's liberating to just go and do these things by yourself.

sbhydrogen · 15/08/2020 21:19

I love going away on my own! Do it, it'll be great.

Sunrise234 · 15/08/2020 21:20

I am in a similar situation OP as I've become older I have less friends and the friends I do have are not interested in the same things as I am.
I am definitely going to start going to places on my own more you have inspired me now.

A lady I worked with said she spent most of her 20s and 30s travelling the world on her own and it sounded amazing.

itsrainingandpouringgg · 15/08/2020 21:20

I was thinking of getting the 10am train getting there for 1.
Dropping off my case then going to Buckingham palace /tower of London
Doing some shopping till 5-6 pm
Heading back to hotel..pop for food somewhere and head into Piccadilly Circus
Then the next day ..just go with the flow.

I bloody love going on holiday alone. Do it. You'll have fantastic time.

Ideasplease322 · 15/08/2020 21:22

I go to London all the time with work alone and stay over. I go out to restaurants, take in the sights and generally have a lovely time to myself😊.

It’s not unusual to see people travelling or dining alone. I sometimes take a book into a restaurant- it feels very indulgent!

Go for it.

Chaosatthezoo · 15/08/2020 21:23

You would absolutely not be a loser to go alone. It would be a fantastic thing to do.

Personally speaking I'd be a bit nervous going on the tube because of Covid. I'd also be a bit nervous finding my way round on my own, but that is only me. Other than that it would be bliss. Hotel, big bed to myself, lovely food, shops, I'd take a couple of books. Would be fabulous.

I've actually heard that this is a good time to go to London because it's quiet.

MirandaWest · 15/08/2020 21:26

I love travelling on my own. Need to do more of it and I will again one day

itsrainingandpouringgg · 15/08/2020 21:26

Weirdly I'm ok finding my way around places.
As long as I've got my phone and Uber I'm ok.
I've been using the metro (Newcastle's mini tube ) but I'm assuming London will be 50 x more busier
I would avoid peak times on the tube for sure.
I've just found a hotel in Leicester Square, that might be a better location.
I could easily walk from Oxford Circus /Piccadilly etc

What things do people recommend seeing in London?
I have Buckingham palace and Tower of London so far

Enjoy OP! I'm off to Corfu on my own next week for 4 days, can't wait 👍

helpfulperson · 15/08/2020 21:32

I love nothing more than an evening in a hotel with nibbles, bottle of wine and netflix. You don't need to 'do' anything in the evening.

Illegitiminoncarborundum · 15/08/2020 21:32

Citymapper is a great app btw!

And it actually prefer the tubes to the metro. Mainly because the tubes don't break down about 50 times a day.

Ijumpedtheshark · 15/08/2020 21:36

I travelled for over a month on my own when I was in my twenties. Loved it. A one night break in London will be great fun. You can be totally selfish and just do exactly what you want.

KingOfDogShite · 15/08/2020 21:38

You’d be a loser for not going because you were worrying about being a loser.

Do what the hell you want and enjoy it!

SirGawain · 15/08/2020 21:39

Why would you be a loser. I did this a lot when I was single. Meals out, theatre, museums and art galleries. I still enjoy going to London with Lady Gawain and we often plan a walking route betwwen places we want to visit; you see so much more of the city than on the tube. Though we use that and taxis when neccessery because of time or distance.

KingOfDogShite · 15/08/2020 21:39

The cabinet war rooms are amazing. We went first thing on a sunday morning and it was very quiet.

WorraLiberty · 15/08/2020 21:39

Tower Bridge is amazing. It has a glass bottomed floor and the whole thing is actually a museum, which a lot of people don't realise.

Entry is only £10.60 though you have to pre-book now, due to Covid.

I love traveling by myself. In my old job before kids I used to travel to different offices all over the U.K., Amsterdam and Poland and I absolutely loved it.
It’s the perfect time to concentrate on you. Focus on what you want to do and put your needs first rather then what your companion wants to do, wondering if they are bored or tired.
My best friend lives in America so 3/4 times a year I would travel by myself to stay with her and I absolutely loved it. I love people watching in airports. Then an 8 hour flight to read a good book watch a good movie eat all of the junk food as snacks. Now I have to take 2 small children and often dh so it’s... tolerable but not fun.
Have a fab time in London.

CilantroChili · 15/08/2020 21:44

I’ve gone on holiday three times now, solo. It’s fantastic. Plan well and go for it Smile
