To go on my own? Looser?

I'm in my 30s and I've never been anywhere on my own overnight.
I really want a night away somewhere.
I've never been to London in over 16 years.
I really want to go for 2 days /1 night and just do some sightseeing /shopping
Would I be a looser to go alone?
I've found a return fare from Newcastle for £30 and hotel for £59 (copthorne Tara)
Do I just go ?
Would you go?
Is this a bad time due to covid ?

If you're in central London you have to know when it would be much quicker walking somewhere than it would getting on the tube, so do a bit of "homework" first otherwise you'll waste a lot of time and money.

Hobbes8 · 15/08/2020 23:18

@itsrainingandpouringgg not quite the same as a west end show, but I just checked to see if the open air theatre in Regent’s Park is open and they are apparently showing a screening of Jesus Christ super star:
openairtheatre.com/production/Superstar-On-Screen

It’s a really beautiful venue.

I haven’t been into London since lockdown but I hear that the tube is pretty quiet, so I wouldn’t worry too much about using it during the day outside of rush hour (which is less rushy than usual).

But if you do want to avoid it, from Leicester Square you’re a short walk from embankment, from where you can catch the clipper (water bus thing on the Thames) which can take you to London Bridge (cocktails/viewing at the shard), it has a stop near Tate modern and the globe, tower bridge which had a fab museum as a PP said, Canary Wharf (bit meh to be honest) and all the way our to Greenwich.

I’m excited for you!

eausolovely · 15/08/2020 23:21

Get yourself there love! Have a fab time, I love having days out on my own, enjoy every moment x

MagentaRocks · 15/08/2020 23:30

The only reason I wouldn’t do this now is the mask wearing. Any other time I would do it and enjoy it.

Onekidnoclue · 15/08/2020 23:40

Sounds great OP. Try the city mapper app. It’s fantastic. Will work out the tube routes for you, tell you platforms, best carriage etc and linked to Uber so can give time and cost comparison.
Have fun. X

itsrainingandpouringgg · 15/08/2020 23:48

I'm not going to lie I'm more excited for the shopping than anything and a change of scenery.
I remember years ago me and my friend sat in Piccadilly Circus for hours just enjoying the atmosphere.
It felt like we were on holiday abroad.

@Onekidnoclue oh thanks for that.
Sounds so handy

Does anyone know how far the tube is from kings cross?
Is king cross tube inside kings cross station ?

Doing things alone isnt a sign of being a looser, it's a sign of being independent. I love to travel alone, London, Brighton, Edinburgh and vaious other parts of the UK. It gives me time and breathing space to do the things I love. Go and have drinks alone, eat out alone, visit tourist attractions alone or have a long bubble bath in your room if that is what your heart desires. I find it very freeing, enjoy!

Lemonyfuckit · 16/08/2020 00:17

See a couple of posters have already mentioned the Thames Clipper but I was going to recommend that too - fun way to travel (plus not at all busy at the moment) and you get great views - so if you did still want to go to the Tower of London that's a great way to get there from central.

Re your question about the tube from Kings X - yes it's in the same station, just follow the signs for the underground.

Personally I wouldn't stay in Leicester Square as I think it's noisy and full of crap tourist traps (but then I live here) but I it is central and many places would be easily walkable.

Lemonyfuckit · 16/08/2020 00:19

Forgot to say, have a great trip! Absolutely nothing remotely looser about taking a trip by yourself, and no one would even notice or bat an eyelid. You get to entirely please yourself, which will be bliss. Just take a good book to a bar / restaurant in the evening and enjoy!

OntheWaves40 · 16/08/2020 00:20

£30! Link please!

simitra · 16/08/2020 00:40

As some posters have said London is an ideal place to go on your own. Its so busy and anonymous that no one will notice you or think it odd that you are, for example, sitting in a restaurant or coffee bar on your own. I have travelled to London on countless trips since my early 20s.

I never had the courage to travel abroad on my own (unless I was going out to friends) until in my 30s. I booked a holiday to Bruges with a friend and she ducked out at the last minute. If I had cancelled I would have lost all my money and it was too late to organize a substitute. I travelled alone and really enjoyed it.

That gave me the courage to go on package holidays alone but I resented paying the single room suppliment. When the internet came along I began organizing my own trips and hotels. Ive travelled all around Europe and the Middle East and to countries like Syria and Iran which it is difficult to visit nowadays.

Make a plan beforehand of the things you would like to see and do. Enjoy your trip to London.

JustMeAndMyTins · 16/08/2020 01:34

You are absolutely not a loser to go anywhere on your own.

Work trips and studies aside, I’ve taken myself off to Rome and Bali alone. I also ate out alone in London weekly pre-Covid.

However, I can’t speak for how normal it will be to visit right now. Life’s reasonably normalish here in zone 2 SE London suburbs but when I went into central to get my hair done this week, it was really quiet. (The tubes were beautiful though.)

But do it anyway!

Oh - Kings X tube is right next to where you get off the train. You can’t miss it. Put the app on your phone so you can plan journeys. Smile

Downunderduchess · 16/08/2020 01:57

I often go into the city & stay at a fancy hotel on my own. I love it. I do what I want, eat whenever I want etc. I don’t have a partner so if I didn’t do some things on my own I may not go anywhere, as not everyone likes doing the same thing & can afford the places I like to stay. I like my own company. Life’s too short! Go have a lovely weekend.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 16/08/2020 02:12

Galleries and exhibitions are dramatically improved by social distancing - fabulous. I've been to the Royal Academy a couple of times, and the National Gallery in the last couple of weeks - you do need to book in advance though.
No idea about shopping in the westend, I've not done that recently, but by all accounts it's pretty quiet. Quite a lot of restaurants haven;t reopened yet, but you'll find something.

I've not used tubes, but I don't normally - buses seem fine (except most morons interpret 'wearing a mask' as draping it round your neck).

I'd say good time to do it - but bring some masks, think about what you want to do in advance, and pre-book anything that requires it.

Hotels are cheap at the moment - travelodge and premier inn both have rooms for around £50 - and non-chain hotels around bloomsbury are generally well priced and close to kings cross/euston.

Have a great time.

BlackForestCake · 16/08/2020 02:14

London is an ideal place to go on your own. Its so busy and anonymous that no one will notice you

You don't need to be in a city of millions to be anonymous either. Look around you. Everywhere you go there are people walking down the street on their own. You don't know why they're on their own, and other people won't know why you're on your own either, even in small towns. They won't even know you're a visitor.

Daph73 · 16/08/2020 03:26

Go for it. Sounds like you really need this. It can only be good for you, and you’ll have a fantastic time. Doing things alone can be very pleasurable and liberating. There’s no one to please but yourself. Have fun!

beanbaggo · 16/08/2020 03:32

When I was young I thought going anywhere alone was so sad and pathetic. Now I'm an adult I think it's brilliant, and more people should find the time to enjoy things alone, you should definitely go!

glasgow357 · 16/08/2020 04:03

I've done it loads! One of my favourite things to do Smile

Blwoingbubbles · 16/08/2020 05:00

You’d be the opposite of a loser! It think it’s amazing when people can enjoy their own company and aren’t held back by st. having to take people places with them all the time.
I’ve just started getting in to treating myself too. I took myself out for a lovely Italian meal the other day and it was wonderful. You’ve inspired me to try something similar with staying away.

longtimecomin · 16/08/2020 06:36

Do it!!Y POI ute not a loser, you're having a new life experience

JackPaul · 16/08/2020 06:46

The real loser is the one who won't go out and do stuff on their own.

Ragwort · 16/08/2020 07:51

sunrise your question about discussing experiences with other people, no, I don't miss it ... to be honest if someone's opinion is very different to mine (not in an 'interesting, intellectual' type way Grin) then I can be a bit disappointed ie; DH and I went for a meal to a certain restaurant, I found it very ordinary & was not impressed ... he thought it was wonderful and wants to return, I don't want to 'spoil' his enjoyment by saying my meal was not very good IYSWIM.

That's why I often prefer to do things on my own ... although I have learned to say 'no thanks' to sitting through various theatre performances after years of politely going with my DH Grin. Just as he no longer feels the need to accompany me to certain things that I love.

HolyForkinShirt · 16/08/2020 08:10

You wouldn't a loser. I would love to do this !

Not sure if I could cope with the mask on a journey that long. But that would be my only draw back in your position
