'chester freezer'

I'm not defending chester draws, but at least I can understand how it happened.

I've just seen someone talk about their 'chester freezer' on Facebook. There's no excuse.

Councilling makes me giggleGrin

Diffuse instead of defuse.

You don't want to diffuse a situation or an argument. It would make it all worse. It could end up in riots. Grin

Absolutely years ago, there was a bit of chemistry between a guy at work and I, but he was terrible for these sorts of gaffes and it was really off putting. The final straw was when he used 'on her behalf' when he meant 'for her benefit' - not awful but I distinctly remember it was at that moment that I decided he probably wasn't the one for me! Luckily I met DH a couple of weeks later, and he is able to use the English language appropriately most of the time, phew! Grin

Oh my god this is so true, I have never thought about that, but I'm sure I have used 'diffuse' in that context before, argh! 😂

A friend of mine kept spelling Covid as Corvid...this was in the peak of the pandemic when it was all over the news...
Yesterday on Facebook someone informed us all of their 'barging' garden furniture...i presume she meant bargain.

I followed an Instagrammer who had a fairly significant number of followers, who kept saying (and spelling) Covid as 'Covoid' and telling us how we must all ensure that we do what we need to because of 'Covoid' etc - again, it was all over the news, the word was everywhere!

On a recent MN thread, several posters claiming to be teachers were discussing how much of their own money they spent on stationary . I was itching to wield my red pen!

A breast of the times...

@KingFredsTache "there was a bit of chemistry between a guy at work and I."

Should that be "me" instead of "I"? I'm not actually sure myself but it doesn't read correctly to me.

Lol, yes I think you are right actually! Ha, and I thought I had read my post several times to ensure I had no hypocritical mistakes in it, damn!

Still, at least I didn't write, 'between a guy at work and myself' I guess Grin

MrsKoala · 18/08/2020 12:03

I saw sole mate on here the other day. While it does make sense I am sure it’s always been soulmate. I googled it just in case I wasn’t down with the kids (never have been) and apparently there are now 2 versions which mean different things - but I’m sure people are using it interchangeably. I initially thought it would be someone you share your shoes with. Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/08/2020 12:10

Sole mate makes some kind of sense, as in your one and only.

Lweji · 18/08/2020 12:54

... me, myself and I, just to be sure.

Supermarketworker06 · 18/08/2020 13:02

Listening to the Jeremy Vine show, some expert was talking about the A level results. I wasn't properly listening, but I'm sure he said that the situation had been "exaggerated" by the problem, should have been "exacerbated".

Lweji · 18/08/2020 13:24

"bazaar"

Quite a bizarre mistake to make or not? Wink

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/08/2020 13:24

With the right sole mate, the world's your lobster! (that last bit is copyright Arthur Daley, IIRC) You just have to hope they won't turn out to be crabby or shellfish, and that you end up in a good plaice. More important than being a mussel man or having a good trout pout, cod knows.

A-pollock-sies.

VeryLittleOwl · 18/08/2020 13:27

One that gets my goat is 'revert' when used in the context 'Please revert to me if you have any queries' or 'I will revert to you later'. Accepted usage in Indian English now, according to some online dictionaries, but still sets my teeth on edge.

I used to proofread for a transcription company and the number of people who typed 'segway' instead of 'segue' was amazing. The best ever phonetic guess I came across in that job was the person who transcribed 'Llandudno' as 'Flamdimpno'.

HorsePellets · 18/08/2020 13:46

‘Decant’ instead of ‘decamp’ is one that gives me pause each time I see it

Youngatheart00 · 18/08/2020 13:57

@VeryLittleOwl oh I really dislike ‘revert’ - overused in the corporate world too!

Along with ‘kindly’ as in ‘kindly do the needful’ - whaaaaaat??!

MrsKoala · 18/08/2020 14:13

Yes. I know. Which is why I said it does make sense. But it isn’t the correct term altho it is being used to mean only one currently as in a monogamous relationship. Rather the one person in your life your soul is linked to.

BunniesLoveBananas · 18/08/2020 14:57

I'm trying to think of some....

Bare with me, please Grin

Lweji · 18/08/2020 14:58

Bear with you would be more dangerous, though.

I use "kindly" instead of "can you fucking finally fucking do x"😂

@onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad

Councillor instead of counsellor. Councilling instead of counselling.

"You should see a relationship councillor" or "I am seeing my councillor for some councilling this afternoon and will ask about bla bla"

This is a regular occurrence on the MN relationships board with seemingly articulate posters. Drives me nuts.

My ex used to see a canceller to have cancelling. Used to drive me up the wall!
