'chester freezer'

I'm not defending chester draws, but at least I can understand how it happened.

I've just seen someone talk about their 'chester freezer' on Facebook. There's no excuse.

@SquirrelFan there is such thing as girdle scones etc... www.cooksinfo.com/girdle

UnaCorda · 17/08/2020 15:58

@Reedwarbler

Oh, and just thought of some more that are often mispronounced by people who should know better; grievous and heinous. So often an extra 'i' is put in making then grievious and heinious. My special cringe is griev-i-ous bodily harm.
Don't forget mischevious.

My SIL once gave me a gift box with printed text thst said it was "from the collon of my heart".

Took me ages to realise what it was supposed to mean!

BunniesLoveBananas · 17/08/2020 16:21

Some of these are very funny. I do get a bit full of the rage when I see some of this stuff online. I have to stop myself from saying "it's drawers not draws!"

Yourself / myself when they mean you/me

I have seen "definitely" spelled incorrectly too many times already today

"should of" when they mean "should have"

"Sat" instead of sitting

OVienna · 17/08/2020 16:46

I almost want to change my username to Day Jar Vue.

Hidingtonothing · 17/08/2020 16:56

I saw chester draws for the first time in RL the other day, I smiled and thought of MN. It's 'rediculous' I hate and I see that all the time, including on here it has to be said Grin

Hidingtonothing · 17/08/2020 16:58

It's taking me ages too InvisibleDragon, I can't figure out what that means Confused

PrincessMonacoOfKent · 17/08/2020 17:06

I work with someone who, when he's going to phone someone, says he's going to give them a quick tingle...

I've explained that it's 'tinkle' as in bell, but he still doesn't get it...

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/08/2020 17:07

@SquirrelFan

I am also (perhaps not coincidentally) lurking on the Old Ladies Thread. Someone posted a link to the old Be-Ro Cookbook, which has recipes for "Girdle Cakes" and "Girdle Scones" to be cooked on a hot "girdle!"

This was printed and published. Clearly mistakes like this have plagued the language for years.

Unless there really is such a thing as a Girdle Cake?

I think that is genuine I have always seen recipes for girdle cakes. Needs investigating.

No, I don't get that one.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/08/2020 17:16

Colon as in something to do with bottom? Otherwise I'm baffled too.

Girdle scones are a Scottish speciality. Girdle here means griddle. It's one of those cases where different dialects have reversed some of the sounds in a word.

Hidingtonothing · 17/08/2020 17:17

Phew, glad it's not just me!

tillytoodles1 · 17/08/2020 17:23

My cousin says mirrow when she means mirror. The one that really annoys me is when people say can you borrow it to me instead of lend.

Max14165 · 17/08/2020 17:25

Jojobythesea · 17/08/2020 17:32

I want an escape goat 🐐 now too 😂

EnidinGuernsey · 17/08/2020 17:53

@mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork

Similarly, I hate it when people write ‘on route’ rather than ‘en route’

YES YES YES - I thought I might be the last person in the UK still spelling it en route. Glad I'm not.

Here in Guernsey correct use is enforced Grin

InvisibleDragon · 17/08/2020 18:13

I think it was collon -> colon -> bottom gives you "from the bottom of my heart" but with some dodgy internet translation

tubercolossus · 17/08/2020 18:34

Pre-Madonna and post-Madonna...

Just thought of another one of my wife's: "Lacksy-daisy" (lackadaisical)

butterpuffed · 17/08/2020 18:41

Someone said the other week that something had happened 'out the blew'

PoloNeckKnickers · 17/08/2020 18:49

Someone asked if a girdle is a real thong (as opposed to a griddle). Yes it is. We used it to make pancakes. It was a heavy cast iron round flat plate with a handle that went from one side to the other. It was referred to as that in my mother's baking books too. Possibly a Scottish word - I'm not sure though.

apostropheuse · 17/08/2020 19:00

*thing, not thong Grin

MikeUniformMike · 17/08/2020 19:28

A girdle is something you cook drop scones or pikelets on.
