'chester freezer'

I'm not defending chester draws, but at least I can understand how it happened.

I've just seen someone talk about their 'chester freezer' on Facebook. There's no excuse.

My friend decorates her Christmas tree with boar boars

Haworthia · 16/08/2020 19:27

I’ve seen “ball balls” but never “boar boars” @Scoobydoobydo Grin

fleurdeliz · 16/08/2020 19:28

I've seen wall drobe recently

SconeofDome · 16/08/2020 19:29

The other day I saw 'cut your nose off, despite your face'

TrickyD · 16/08/2020 19:30

‘I was sat’ where it should be ‘I was sitting’ or ‘I was seated’.

Did someone pick you up and plonk you on a chair?

Moanranger · 16/08/2020 19:31

I just saw water bauser (for sale). It’s a bowser, you idiot.
Also random spellings & usage of loose & lose, v irritating!

SongRiver · 16/08/2020 19:34

He's instead of his.
It's like nails down a blackboard every time I see it! Grin

Ohtherewearethen · 16/08/2020 19:43

@stupidcow7 - I'm so sorry to be 'that' poster but I noticed something at the end of your post that I see frequently but doesn't make sense - 'opps' instead of what I assume is meant to be 'oops'? I see it a lot on Facebook and wonder if it's an autocorrect thing?

Part of me wonders if we need to move with the times and accept that things such as handwriting and spelling just aren't that important any more what with technology that is meant to do it all for us yet part of me just wants to weep at the lack of a most basic command of the spelling and roots of words, let alone checking for sense before coming out with something. I make typos/fail to spot autocorrects like most people but ultimately I don't use words and phrases that I don't understand as it is better to stay silent and be thought stupid than open my mouth/write something I don't understand and have it confirmed. A PP mentioned someone writing 'say lavee' or similar and I just wonder what on earth they think it means?! I guess it's French so maybe not the best example but things like 'chester draws' is just incredible.

cariadlet · 16/08/2020 19:43

My Google feed just offered me a YouTube clip showing somebody cooking "grass fed steaks".

I was tempted to watch in case they showed how the pieces of meat had been encouraged to munch on grass before being cooked but I'm vegan so didn't really think it was worth it.

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 16/08/2020 19:45

Que - oh good god...

Que me looking for ages.

It’s a long que. We’ll come back later.

My eldest ds also says utters instead of udders! As in cow uddersGrin

Hanywany · 16/08/2020 19:50

Dh just said jessing gownd instead of dressing gown bless him! Grin

LadyBristol · 16/08/2020 19:52

What drives me mad is my friend on Facebook always writes ‘use’ to say ‘you’s’, which grammatically is just as bad. A sentence might read “use will have to pop in sometime”
Confused

Hariboandme · 16/08/2020 20:02

My ex used to say yadle instead of ladle and I never had the heart to correct him because he couldn't spell so good and I already corrected his specific pacifics Grin he used to say "many of times" too instead of many times and the other day I noticed our son says that one too, corrected him straightaway lol Grin

DreamTheMoors · 16/08/2020 20:13

@Moanranger

Oh my god. I’ve a friend who constantly says loose incorrectly.
Her: I’m afraid I’ll loose my job.
Me: No! How will you lose your job?
Her: They told me today I might loose it.
Me: But you won’t lose it!
No matter how many times I spell it correctly, she continues to misspell it. I think she thinks I’m wrong. Drives me batty. I wonder what her coworkers think when she uses it professionally. And I wonder if I should say something & if I did would it piss her off...

Hingeandbracket · 16/08/2020 20:14

Really fed up with adverse being used where it should be "averse".

Worse and worst have swapped meanings for some people.

Lots of misuse of misnomer too.

Why use a word if you don't know what it actually means?

lazylinguist · 16/08/2020 20:15

'opps' instead of what I assume is meant to be 'oops'?

Ooh yes- I notice this one often too. Surely if you spelled it 'opps' it would be pronounced to rhyme with 'shops' instead of 'loops'?

MargotsBumpyNight · 16/08/2020 20:24

My favourite was someone posting on a local group looking for a mother's day hamper. She wanted something that included wine, chocolate, candles and a plague Grin

Aglet · 16/08/2020 20:26

Notice placed above wash basin. Warning! Water is hot and may scold you.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 16/08/2020 20:50

Far warned is far armed. Mmmm i do love a good whatsapp message from my cousin.

Haffiana · 16/08/2020 20:53

I have posted this one before...

I have only seen it used here on MN. 'Cowtailed' instead of kowtowed.

Baggingarea · 16/08/2020 21:04

Oh lord the ones that get me are the words that surely people write everyday!

"To" instead of "too" / "two"
"There" constantly mixed up with "they're" / "their"
"I would of" instead of "I would have"

Surely it's not that hard to get these the right way round? Although maybe I'm just a snooty cow!

That said, I used to be s--t hot at spelling until iPhones became a thing. Now if I'm writing by hand I'll struggle with double letters in words like "accommodate". Anyone else?

Getskinnyordietrying · 16/08/2020 21:05

Had a fight with a friend - always pronounces smyths toys as it’s spelt and not as it sounds, also same friend - it’s not moorish it’s noorish because you can’t stop nooring on it

DreamTheMoors · 16/08/2020 21:10

@TheSockMonster

I’m in California. When I was 17, in my last year of secondary, my English teacher had us write a short story. It would be graded on creativity, spelling and grammar.
I chose to write about an en experience I’d recently had - a horrific incident I witnessed at a rodeo. A cowboy was killed by an enormous bull- trampled by the animal that had bucked him off.
It was a stunning thing for a child to see and I was good with my words.
I wrote a rough draft, then a second, more neat one. My teacher was so impressed she read it to the entire class, and I thought, “I aced this.”
When we got our papers back, I received a 75 out of 100 for “carelessness”.
That left an impression - that spelling and grammar and being thorough count, no matter if it’s school or work.
That teacher actually changed my life with one grade.

cariadlet · 16/08/2020 21:13

Not sure how Smyths would be pronounced incorrectly. It's written like "myth" with an added initial s which suggests the (correct) pronunciation as Smyth/Smith.
