To think colleague is not too old to have a baby

My colleague at work has just told us all she’s 14 weeks pregnant. I’m very happy for her however another colleague mentioned today not to her but to me that she’s a bit to old to be having a baby. She’s 33 which I think is within the normal age range.

Your colleague who commented is a twat.

Notimeforaname · 14/08/2020 23:40

Totally normal. Odd comment to make!

BilboBercow · 14/08/2020 23:41

At 33?! Totally normal age to have a child

LeftMyOtherUsernameAtHome · 14/08/2020 23:41

33 isn't old at all. I'd say it's a pretty average age to have a child.

SlB09 · 14/08/2020 23:42

Wow I'm really surprised they think this is old! I agree it's quite the norm, I had my first at 33 nearly 34 and certainly wasn't out of the primary. Perhaps on the older side of normal for first if anything

sitckmansladylove · 14/08/2020 23:44

Bizarre comment by your colleague??? Totally average I would think

DramaAlpaca · 14/08/2020 23:44

It's about average these days I'd've thought. Certainly not old.

PickAChew · 14/08/2020 23:44

Had my eldest at 34.

Too old for a baby is merely too old to conceive.

Starlightstarbright1 · 14/08/2020 23:45

Is commentor young ?

I remember thinking 30 was old when I was 17 - now it has come and gone.

I was 36 when I had my Ds

ZZGirl · 14/08/2020 23:47

A totally fine and acceptable age and also none of your colleagues business

LittleRa · 14/08/2020 23:47

I’m 35 and pregnant. How old is the commenter?

thedaywewillremeber · 14/08/2020 23:47

I would say he’s late 20’s.

Had mine at 40 and 42. What a weird thing to say.

HandsOffMyRights · 14/08/2020 23:48

What a strange thread.
Are you the colleague or the pregnant colleague maybe?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/08/2020 23:49

Eh? 33 is not too old at all. When I started reading, I was expecting you to say your pregnant colleague was in her 40s (also not too old) but I’d say 33 was fairly average these days.

LouiseTrees · 14/08/2020 23:49

That’s where the issue is then. Anyway out of my friend group I am the youngest to have a baby (despite trying to conceive for like a decade). I’m nearly 33, had baby at 32.

thedaywewillremeber · 14/08/2020 23:52

No I’m just curious what others think. I was in my 20’s when I had children and felt too young. I prefer think she’s the perfect age.

2tired2bewitty · 14/08/2020 23:55

I think the average age of a first time mother in the UK is now 35, so you might argue she’s a bit young.

OK, fair enough OP. I was 32 and an older colleague commented on how old this was! I thought it was uncalled for, but she was very old fashioned.

I don't think there's a "right" age within reason if it works for your family.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 15/08/2020 00:07

Did you say anything? I would have intervened there and then. It’s completely normal within my peer group. Even if it was too old, it’s none of his business and 14 weeks in, it’s a bit late!

TheGoogleMum · 15/08/2020 00:11

Nah definitely not. Maybe a teensy bit if she's planning to have like 5 or something maybe? But I think that's a normal age. I thought most women were 30+ nowadays.

Winterwoollies · 15/08/2020 00:13

So a late 20s male declared a pregnant 33 year old woman ‘too old’ to have a baby? Well doesn’t he sound delightful... Confused

RaininSummer · 15/08/2020 00:15

I thought you were going to say she was 47 or something. Commenting would still be rude but 33! Ideal king age.

Yetiyoga · 15/08/2020 00:16

That is average I would say! More women focus on their career / enjoying a child free life in their 20s nowadays than they did years ago.

That is NOT to say that women who have children in their 20s are not enjoying life by the way!

Bellabelloo · 15/08/2020 00:18

None of my friends had babies until their mid 30s! I was 40.
