My dad wanted an iphone watch for a very long time but just couldn't afford it. I have been looking out for any sale and came across one. Although still a bit expensive I thought I may not find one with this price again.

I was going on about it again and I told him I got him one. He asked me what colour it is and I said white.. he said I wish it was black I wanted black.. then he said which model so I told him and he aid he wanted the latest one.

So I'm thinking sod it! Ungrateful. I will give it to my teenage cousin instead who I'm sure will be grateful for it.!

Am I right to feel annoyed? Feels like I just wasted money.

YANBU

Ungrateful chuff

pictish · 14/08/2020 22:33

Yabu sorry. It was generous of you of course but with an item like that it has to be to the person’s specific taste or not at all.
I wouldn’t want a white one either. You did waste money.

BlueSlice · 14/08/2020 22:36

It depends: was he constantly asking you to get him one or was he just talking about in general how much he’d like one?

If I wanted a specific handbag and someone got me similar but without the feature I wanted and in a colour I didn’t like I don’t know how I’d feel.

TidyDancer · 14/08/2020 22:37

Of course YANBU. His reaction was rude. If he wanted something specific then he should've said. You tried to do a kind thing, it's really not your fault he's so ungrateful.

EuphegeniaDoubtfire · 14/08/2020 22:37

I can kind of see where he's coming from.

What's the point if it's not exactly what he wanted? He won't get the enjoyment you were hoping out of it.

AIMD · 14/08/2020 22:39

Erm I don’t think it’s unreasonable that he wanted a different type to what he got but maybe he was unreasonable in how he responded when you gave it to him.

If he said “thank you so much for the thought but I’m actually saving to get the x one in black as that’s what I really want. Can you get a refund for this one so you haven’t lost money” yabu.

If he said “what’s this shit....I wanted it in black why did you get me white” yanbu

AmIwrongg · 14/08/2020 22:41

Thank you for the replies. I should have mentioned. He said the colour didn't matter neither did the model as long as it was an iphone watch! Wish he said oh actually I want this colour bla bla but on many occassions he said he didn't mind!

Also he kept hinting so I thought I would just buy it.

@AIMD yep he was disappointed

OP posts:
pictish · 14/08/2020 22:41

Sorry that sounded abrupt.
What I mean is...jewellery, clothing, accessories, even gadgets...they’re a personal thing. You know what you have in mind. The desired thing in the wrong colour is sometimes just...wrong.

As an asides I have only seen women with white apple watches. I’m sure there are men who have them but I can’t say as I’ve met one myself. I think most men would go for black.

AmIwrongg · 14/08/2020 22:42

@pictish it was the only one I could afford. Especially when he said he didn't mind what colour or model it is. :(

AmIwrongg · 14/08/2020 22:42

@TidyDancer thank you!

OP posts:
KilljoysDutch · 14/08/2020 22:43

Did he know you had brought it specifically for him?

pictish · 14/08/2020 22:44

Sorry again. You did a kind thing. I do hope he wasn’t rude about it. Sad

AmIwrongg · 14/08/2020 22:48

@pictish aw thank you. Sounds silly but I feel kind of hurt and don't think I can give it to him. He also started questioning where I got it from then started searching and showing me others ones which were even more expensive :/

OP posts:
amusedbush · 14/08/2020 22:49

The series 5 Apple watch is extortionate, I’m not surprised you didn’t spring for that one. I do understand that it’s a personal item and he might have a preference but he told you previously that he wasn’t bothered - you’re not a mind reader!

I guess he just needs to get saving several hundred quid to get what he wants, and don’t bother doing anything else for him Smile

AmIwrongg · 14/08/2020 22:49

@KilljoysDutch he knows. I will just say will look for a black one and keeps this for my husband. He won't use it so will give it to cousin. But I won't buy anything else for him.

OP posts:
AmIwrongg · 14/08/2020 22:50

@amusedbush I won't bother any more 😫

OP posts:
BlueSlice · 14/08/2020 22:57

Can’t you return it?

TorgosPizza · 14/08/2020 23:05

I'd return it, if you can. And ignore your father's whining from now on!

pictish · 14/08/2020 23:07

Return it if possible, yes.

AmIwrongg · 14/08/2020 23:08

I checked and can't return it. I'm stuck with it..

I can sort of see where he’s coming from. To a gift giver the colour won’t matter but it will
to the recipient who will be using it.

I’m not sure what you mean by “white” Apple Watch though. The only white Apple Watch is the ceramic version which is the most expensive option. If you just mean the watch strap is white, he can easily buy a black strap off amazon for cheap to sort that.

Or you could exchange the watch for a black variant. Or just get a refund full stop, you don’t have to keep it. Not sure how it would be a waste of money, unless you bought it from a private seller on eBay or something.

Hairthrowaway · 14/08/2020 23:14

Worst case scenario if you need the money back, just resell it

WeEE · 14/08/2020 23:18

That is so ungrateful.

Haven't got anything useful to say, but I would be mega pissed off too.

AriettyHomily · 14/08/2020 23:32

It's not ungrateful to pretend you like something you don't when you have to wear it every day. White isn't the best colour, can you just get a black strap?
