I’ve had a lot of free time on my hands recently which has had me thinking a lot. And I can’t seem to find my own personal answer to this, and just wondered what the answer is for others?

Writing! At least, communicating with the written word to make a difference/help people/educate. I'm rubbish with face-to-face verbal communication, but give me a pen or a keyboard and I'm eloquent as fuck.

BohemianDream · 14/08/2020 10:11

To love of course.

Backtoreality1 · 14/08/2020 10:18

Don't have or need one. The only other option is to stop living and don't fancy that much, so just generally get on with it.....not everything needs to be defined or have a purpose.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/08/2020 10:19

Backtoreality1 agreed!!

My purpose is the lack of alternative

Huhokthen · 14/08/2020 10:20

I don't think i have a single purpose - I'd actually say that anyone who did was in quite a risky/unhealthy position.

My reason for living is that i enjoy it.

Hardbackwriter · 14/08/2020 10:22

I don't think I have one set purpose in life and I think that's fine? There are lots of things I enjoy - writing, reading, swimming outdoors, long walks, museums, watching rubbish on TV - but none of them are my passions that I could live without. I switched from a career that was more of a passion to one that's less so but fewer hours and more stable and I'm really happy about that choice so I guess the passion for my old job wasn't really there. I certainly wouldn't say I live to work, though I do also know I'm happier working; periods where I haven't been (e.g. mat leave) haven't really suited me. DH makes me very happy but he's certainly not my reason for living; I really, really wouldn't want to live without him but if he were hit by a bus tomorrow I'd find ways of carrying on. I love DS with a fierceness and a depth I couldn't have imagined before him but I think it would be doing the rest of my life a disservice to say that he's my reason to live; I was a round and complete person before I was a mother.

Thinking about it, though, I don't need a reason to live - I have lots of them, but it's also not a question I ever ask myself. Of course I want to live, I never question it. I have though - several years ago, when I was in a very dark place and experiencing suicidal ideation. Which makes me want to just check that you're ok, OP?

at risk of those who don't believe that they need such things, Jesus is my purpose in life

Home42 · 14/08/2020 10:22

To have fun. I have to work to make the money to enjoy my life. I share it with people I love to enhance my enjoyment.

Huhokthen · 14/08/2020 10:25

@DDIJ

I don't have one. The things I would enjoy doing are not appropriate for me to do so I don't do them. I don't have anything to look forward to so I am just waiting it out.
Now super curious to know what inappropriate things you would enjoy. Are we talking throwing eggs off bridges, month-long treks through Tibet or drug-fuelled orgies??
UnaCorda · 14/08/2020 10:26

Wish I knew. For some reason the universe doesn't appear to want me to have my own family, or even a partner, so I mainly just muddle through on my own.

RaininSummer · 14/08/2020 10:29

I don't think there really is a purpose in life. We just need to find the things which make us content enough to reach the end.

FlamingoAndJohn · 14/08/2020 10:31

I don’t have one. I love my DH and my cat. I enjoy my job.
I take pleasure from the little things.

Badhairday101 · 14/08/2020 10:32

I agree with the above poster, the purpose of life is to love.

Pacif1cDogwood · 14/08/2020 10:33

The purpose of life is... LIFE!

Just live your life.
As best you can.
Ideally, with some purpose and fun.
Smile

squashyhat · 14/08/2020 10:33

To be alive and to be me. There is no grand plan so I'm just enjoying while I'm here.

RJnomore1 · 14/08/2020 10:34

To do some good that eases others paths, have fun and learn as much as I possibly can.

I enjoy life. I don’t think I necessarily have a higher purpose but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in worth if that makes sense?

WinterAndRoughWeather · 14/08/2020 10:35

I’m an absurdist, I don’t believe in a purpose, life just is.

Personally I am trying to make my life as joyful as l can within my means, and do what I can to help my family be happy too. There’s nothing else, and that’s fine.

VettiyaIruken · 14/08/2020 10:36

I don't have one.
I'm here and I just make the best of it, waiting to snuff it.

SidesteppinTheRona · 14/08/2020 10:38

Not sure I have one. There

SidesteppinTheRona · 14/08/2020 10:39

Oops!

There are people (and animals) I love and look after, but really I just enjoy being alive. That's enough.

MovinOnUp · 14/08/2020 10:39

To be the best person I can be, Whilst enjoying all the little things and raising my tiny humans to be good and decent adults. That's pretty much it really.

I don't think anyone has to have a purpose as such, There's a lot to be said for living a simple life.

I stay away from drama, I think nothing of removing people from my life who are draining my happiness (this has been the biggest change for me in recent years and I have never been happier)

Afternooninthepark · 14/08/2020 10:41

Since hitting my mid 40’s I’ve been thinking about this more and more and even more so these last few weeks since my MIL is at end of life. I often don’t feel I have a purpose and would love one but maybe it as simple as keeping yourself busy. None of my busy friends ever talk about contemplating their purpose in life. I must get a hobby!

SerenDippitty · 14/08/2020 10:43

I don’t really think I need one. I didn’t ask to be born so just have to get on with life as best I can.
