This obsession with blue eyes! Anyone else?

Honestly, I know it's a minor thing but it's really starting to annoy me! 🤣

Dh and I both have hazel eyes. We are white but more olivey skin (not that it matters!) Ds is the spitting image of me as a baby and his eyes are still that changeable very dark blue/brown colour, but looks dark in most lights. He has basically the same eyes I did as a baby and most of the time they look hazel, but I guess they haven't quite set yet. Mine didn't set until 1. He is 9 months. (Other babies we know with blue eyed parents have proper blue eyes - ds has never looked very blue!) Also neither DH or myself are blue!!

Pil are both blue and hazel eyed and mil is the blue eyed one and is obsessed that our baby will have blue eyes! Every time she visits (maybe 6 or 7 times now) it's "his eyes look blue! Are they blue?" Then looks disappointed when we say no. I'm not kidding. Every time she comes in! I actually have an intake of breath now. She then makes the odd comment of "well they look blue to me." as if I'm making it up. Confused

I actually find it quite offensive. Dark eyes are attractive you know! Her son has them! And ds has my eyes!
She even made some comment about how her other son has blue eyes and how beautiful they are.

Anyone else have people like this? Blue eyes are no nicer than dark eyes. Hazel eyes are beautiful thank you very much!

I'm the only one out of a family of 6 with hazel/green eyes, everyone else has blue. When my daughter was born my mum was obsessed with my daughter keeping her blue eyes, it was actually insulting after a while. She got my eye colour but she looks perfect because it's the way she's meant to look. :)

LioneIRichTea · 13/08/2020 13:48

Blue eyes are surprisingly recent. They didn't exist 10,000 years ago. It kind of blows my mind to think that at the point that human beings first started practicing agriculture, blue eyes had not yet evolved.

That’s really interesting! Smile

Gwynfluff · 13/08/2020 13:48

Draw her the genetic tree for likelihood of blue eyes based on parents/grand parent eye colouring and just give it to her every time she asks....

I'm a hazel with a blue and we have 2 blue and a very deep brown (lovely). But we had blue/blue and blue/hazel from the grandparents.

sibling is blue/brown with kids with hazel and brown but grandparents were blue/hazel and brown/brown).

LioneIRichTea · 13/08/2020 13:50

Whenever I go abroad, I always get asked if I’m Irish before I open my mouth as apparently I “look” Irish because of my dark hair and green eyes

My DP gets asked if he’s Irish or Welsh because of his black hair and blue eyes Grin

YorkshireTeaIsTheBest · 13/08/2020 14:00

Blue eyes are a recessive gene.

I have hazel / topaz eyes and the father had brown eyes so I assumed my children would have brown etes.
DC1 ended up with bright green eyes. Eyes were dark blue at birthand then became green -the eyes look like a "cat's eyes" and I mean that is a compliment way -they are just stunning. In some lights they look purple / green and in some blue / green and some gold / green depending on the light -they are truly unique.
Dc2 had brown eyes when born but have become a brown /green colour.

Both kids have the same hair a dark beautiful deep brown but with flecks of ginger and gold. They really are blessed.

My sister's son is blond with blue eyes and she said to me "he is the golden child perfect angel child not like yours" and I was like -whatever. Raised eyebrow and moved on.

Yokohamajojo · 13/08/2020 14:05

We have all the eye colours in the family so I was just curious of what my DS's would end up with, ended up one with blue and one with green eyes and they do look so different as well, not like brothers at all! funny how genes gets dished out

Never had any comments or favouritism due to their eye colours though

Leflic · 13/08/2020 14:07

@missdunkindohnut

According a quick google research around 1 in 4 white people have blue eyes so not exactly rare
That’s three quarters of the white population that don’t and most of the non white won’t have them either. So that’s rare enough surely?
passthemustard · 13/08/2020 14:17

I have 4 DC. 2 with dark eyes, really dark brown big beautiful eyes. And 2 with beautiful blue eyes. One a real vivid sky blue and the other very light baby blue.

My brown eyed babies weren't dark dark eyed when they were born and got darker over the first few months. My blue eyed babies were blue from the off. Clearly definitely blue.

I think at 9 months he's not going to significantly change eye colour.

My DH and I both have/had dark eyes. My dad and both DH parents had dark eyes. (He was of Middle Eastern Origin, I'm Scandinavia/Germanic) my mum is blonde hair blue eyes and my girls are the spitting image of her. (She doesn't really care about it though, only interested in ginger hair 😂)

Just ignore your MILs obsession. Let her get on with it.

quantumdog · 13/08/2020 14:17

Blue eyes are pretty common but I also love them. I have deep green eyes but my children have a mix of blue and green making them look almost turquoise. I often get lost looking in my DS7s beautiful eyes.
I think MIL just wants a common connection with your son, nothing to be worried about.

EthelMayFergus · 13/08/2020 14:18

I think about 7% of the world's population had blue eyes when I studied Biology at school a few decades ago, but here in northern Europe it's obviously not rare. I'm Irish and know a lot of redheads, and I think they all have blue eyes. Same as Wax in Scotland, it just seems normal to me. Genetics is fascinating, particularly in your own children and seeing what they have inherited from whom and how it can drastically change as they grow up.

MangoFeverDream · 13/08/2020 14:19

This often tends to go hand-in-hand with colourism, which I find really sad - there is often favouritism towards those with fairer complexions and eye colours other than blue

Tbf, East Asia had a cultural preference for white skin that far, far predated the Western arrival. It just meant you weren’t a peasant and didn’t have to work out in the sun. You can still see their extreme sun avoidance methods to this day 😂

Nothing else to it.

MangoFeverDream · 13/08/2020 14:19

Also, green eyes are the best, no question

Rainbunny · 13/08/2020 14:21

I had to google this, so worldwide about 8% have blue eyes and 4% have green eyes (including amber) so green is rarer. We're in northern Europe though so locally these are not uncommon eye colours at all.

I suppose it's personal taste, my DH has pale blue eyes and I'm not especially crazy about them as a feature except that they're part of the man I love! I actually don't care for pale blue-grey eye shades, I've only met one person in my life who had truly stunning blue eyes and she was Irish with dark brown hair and deep sapphire blue eyes (like Elizabeth Taylor) and they weren't coloured contacts.

I have green eyes but not a pretty shade of green, sort of pale green-greyish, nothing to write home about.

Honestly, I always think brown eyes are the prettiest colour and much more practical. My eyes water like crazy in bright light and if I forget to wear sunglasses I end up squinting painfully.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 13/08/2020 14:21

“That’s three quarters of the white population that don’t and most of the non white won’t have them either. So that’s rare enough surely?”

But it’s not just split blue vs not blue, the other 3/4 will be a mix of brown, grey, green, hazel, plus the super rare colours like yellow that someone else mentioned on here. So it’s not comparatively rare.

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 13/08/2020 14:22

I've always wanted brown eyes! My mum had hazel eyes and dark hair, my dad had blonde hair and blue eyes. I'm blonde with really light blue eyes. My husband has olive skin, black hair and hazel eyes but both of our kids are blonde haired and light blue eyes like me.

Eatyourbanana · 13/08/2020 14:25

Blue eyes aren’t rare are they?
DH has brown eyes, I have blue eyes.
Eldest DC has brown eyes, youngest DC has blue eyes.

I love BOTH their eyes, but I do get especially taken back by how beautiful & dark DC1s brown eyes are. I think PPs are right that she just likes a connecting between her & DGC.

Beenaboutabit · 13/08/2020 14:30

I have blue eyes and OH has beautiful brown eyes. I knew the inevitability of DS having brown eyes (OH is Japanese so brown eye gene passed on and it's dominant), and I always love looking at eye shapes and shades so I was curious about DS.

DS had dark blue eyes for the first week before they turned hazel. I was so excited not because blue is better but because blue is part of me. His eyes are lovely and I wouldn't wish any different... but seeing them blue for a fleeting moment made me feel good. MIL may be having similar thoughts... you could always ask.

SapphireSeptember · 13/08/2020 14:35

My dad has blue eyes and black curly hair (he's half Welsh, half Italian,) my mum has brown hair and brown eyes, (She's English with some Scottish thrown into the mix.)
I ended up with hazel eyes and dark brown hair, my younger brother's hair is lighter than mine but curlier, next brother down has light brown hair too, and they both have light brown eyes, my sister is blonde and blue eyed, and so is my niece (her DD.)
I love my eyes but I'm slightly bitter I missed out on the black haired gene. Grin

ThisLittleLady · 13/08/2020 14:36

Didn’t know it was a thing to be honest. Dark eyes are lovely.

shas19 · 13/08/2020 14:38

I have bright green and my son has dark green/hazel, partner has dark brown and our daughter has piercing blue eyes. Down to genetics I think

Sorberret · 13/08/2020 14:39

I don't think it's because she thinks blue are better but rather her trying to claim some sort of ownership so to speak. She'd be saying the opposite if she had brown eyes and you had blue.
My MIL always produces old photos and claims that dc look just like so and so!

Change17 · 13/08/2020 14:42

I’m surprised to see how many people seem unaware that blue eyes are often seen as the “desirable” colour. In fact there was a trend not long ago on TikTok that spilled over to Instagram and Facebook that encourages brown/hazel eyed people to show theirs off since blue eyes were always the ones to get attention. There was a meme a while ago that got hundreds of thousands of retweet’s on Twitter that said something like “I know everyone loves blue eyes but you can’t tell me these aren’t just beautiful pools of chocolate and honey and caramel” with photos of various shades of blue.

I certainly remember growing up a lot of my hazel/brown eyed friends wishing they had blue eyes. I’ve personally always been a sucker for deep brown eyes, but I certainly can see how blue/green has become the “desired” colour. You just need to look at the prevalence of green and blue contact lenses vs brown. Celebs particularly often post photos on insta (I’m thinking largely the Kardashian’s here) wearing blue contact lenses. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a blue eyed person wear brown lenses.

Change17 · 13/08/2020 14:43

That of course meant to say “with photos of various shades of brown” 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Grapewrath · 13/08/2020 14:45

Agree people are weird about eye colour. MIL would regularly refer to dd having blue eyes just like her. Erm no, she has blue eyes like both of her parents 😂
My own dm always goes on about how she loves having green eyes because they are so RARE. They’re more of a browny green and not particularly striking but she’s always going on about it and how lucky dbro is to have inherited them. She feels sad for me that I inherited my Dads ‘common’ blue eyes. I love my eyes 👀 actually Wink

Grapewrath · 13/08/2020 14:48

And yes I get asked if I’m Irish as dark hair with red in and blue eyes
