I don't think you can equate them with earrings on an infant. I stand by what I said about headband/bows being tacky and naff but piercing a baby's earrings is downright cruel and disgusting.

alittleisland · 13/08/2020 14:08
@Merename. You mention cultural issues and that these parents love their children. What about the fact that 82% of Egyptian women suffer from FGM. I am sure the Egyptian parents love their children and would say that they are just going along with cultural norms. Is that acceptable because it is a cultural issue?
FGM is illegal in Egypt and has been for a number of years. There are still people that will try to get it done by a dodgy doctor but there are serious penalties for both the Doctor and the parents. Apparently, it goes back to pharaonic times, has no links with Islam but parents believed it would prevent their daughters from being sexually promiscuous before marriage.

paap1975 · 13/08/2020 14:12

My brother has just shaved his one-year old boy's head, so that he doesn't catch the gay. He didn't put it in those exact terms but that's exactly his thinking. Due to lockdown, baby's hair was a little longer and there was absolutely no way he would tolerate anyone possibly thinking his boy might be a girl (he did actually say that last bit). It's completely nuts!!!
It's barking to treat baby girls like dolls and it's barking to push babies into old-fashioned gender roles!

GJ14 · 13/08/2020 14:12

I agree!

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 13/08/2020 14:12

Does she look miserable and uncomfortable? I mean I get the tacky and naff thing since taste is personal and subjective, but the way people go on about it you'd think it's child abuse and setting them up for a Stepford wife role.

As to why.. I don't know. Just because we had them. She spent more time without one than with one so it wasn't because "OMG no one will know she's a girl" or "she MUST look pretty".

Her childhood was not ruined.Grin

Headbands and Bows on bald baby heads,
SerenDippitty · 13/08/2020 14:15

They do it because it's obviously hugely offensive to a baby to be mistaken for the opposite sex. wink

So why not little baseball caps on baby boys so they're not mistaken fir girls? Grin

TrickyKid · 13/08/2020 14:20

No idea, it looks awful. People do all sorts of unnecessary things to babies though. I can't stand those photo shoots where they prop new borns into all sorts of positions to take a picture which looks completely unnatural.

Obviously its not on a par with FGM, it doesn't do any harm and it doesn't actually condemn them to a lifetime of domestic servitude. I get that in the long run it doesn't actually matter....

But I do think symbolism and the way little kids are treated is important. The "pinkification" thing is really real problem: its still virtually impossible to buy affordable clothes for young children which aren't ridiculously gender polarised.

They get them started young enough without this sort of thing and its perfectly legitimate to ask why people feel the need to do it.

I also stand by thinking they are totally hideous. Why would you bother with something that's both ugly and entrenches the worst sort of gender stereotypes for a tiny baby?

PablosHoney · 13/08/2020 14:21

The clothes in RiverIsland for tiny babies make me 😱 so uncomfortable, tight leather jacket with faux fur collar and skinny jeans for a 0-3 month old anyone, babies aren’t dolls.

mrsmuddlepies · 13/08/2020 14:22

@alittleisland .
I never said FGM was legal in Egypt and that means it is done for cultural reasons. I know Islam is totally against FGM. So why do so many parents go against their religion and the state to circumcise baby girls? Cultural reasons?
Any teacher in London will have experienced girls from the UK being whisked off for a holiday and coming back circumcised.
www.refworld.org/pdfid/5a17ef454.pdf
That is why using cultural reasons as a justification can often be wrong.

RedRumTheHorse · 13/08/2020 14:26

@paap1975 did you point out to your brother that his child doesn't even know that other people have different thoughts to him yet so won't even know he is a boy?

RedRumTheHorse · 13/08/2020 14:28

So why not little baseball caps on baby boys so they're not mistaken fir girls?

Only problem is some little girls, like my DD love, their baseball caps and you can buy them in the girls section of clothing retailers.

BoggledBudgie · 13/08/2020 14:30

Automatically assume anyone that puts crap like that on their babies doesn’t have a brain and is someone to avoid at all costs. Normally find their mothers are vapid empty bimbos themselves.

ThisLittleLady · 13/08/2020 14:34

Looks really uncomfortable pulling at their fine brand new hair! And don’t get me started on babies with pierced ears ..that’s taking an absolute liberty!! Don’t pierce poor wee babies ears. Leave them as babies for a wee while....

You on the other hand sound like a wonderful person 🤨😂

No the poster is just a no nonsense person.

2andahalfpints · 13/08/2020 14:45

I clicked yabu by mistake 🤦🏻‍♀️ YANBU it looks ridiculous, babies imo need nothing more than a comfy baby gro, also hate when people dress their little girls as fashion victim grown ups. Plenty of time for all that once they are older!

Dollywood · 13/08/2020 14:48

Like all clothes put on babies- either sex- they are there because parents have chosen to! I loved putting them on my DD!! Smile

EvaHoffman · 13/08/2020 14:57

Grim
Tacky
Naff
Trashy

What people used to call 'vulgar' but they can't use that word anymore because it makes the objection too obvious.

anon5000 · 13/08/2020 15:01

MN babies must only ever wear white baby grows until they are are least one.

Yeah, the expression "vapid, empty bimbos" is just no-nonsense rather than an incredibly rude, judgemental way to describe somebody who has merely a different opinion/taste to them Hmm
TurquoiseDress · 13/08/2020 15:02

YANBU

To me, headbands & bows are utterly ridiculous for babies/v young children.

I've seen many older ones try to pull them off...they do seem uncomfortable for little ones, I do think it's more for the parents!

Staffy1 · 13/08/2020 15:04

I thought this was a traveller thing as those are the only people I've noticed that have babies dressed like that.

paap1975 · 13/08/2020 15:06

@RedRumTheHorse I made it quite clear to him that I thouught he was being utterly ridiculous

roarfeckingroarr · 13/08/2020 15:09

I judge the parents every single time I see this. Not even sorry. It is just so utterly stupid.
