Went out for dinner tonight and ordered sausage and mash from the menu. It said it came with garden peas, but mentioned nothing about salad.

This is gross right?

It's this lowering of standards that lost us the British Empire!

I feel this merits a strongly worded letter to The Times.

Gravy is meant for overcooked, soggy, lukewarm vegetables in the proper British way - not the abomination on your plate!

SleepingStandingUp · 13/08/2020 09:13

@stayathomer

That's an abomination!!!!! Gravy only with potatoes and meat. Only!!
Well that's rather an extremist view against gravy! What has a bowel of child, or even cups and cheese ever done to you that you would withhold their gravy?
TwentyViginti · 13/08/2020 09:18

Bowel of child with gravy? No thanks!

Cups and cheese? Crunchy!

What is bowel of child? Also will try the cheese thing. Never heard of it!!!

TooTTootY · 13/08/2020 09:20

Bowel of a child with gravy... Tonight's tea sorted! Thanks for the tip Grin

My mum used to have pickled beetroot with her shepherd's pie and gravy - not quite in the same league of wrongness, but getting there

Wtf is wrong with this? I love beetroot with stuff like this.

Your autocorrects are wonderous!!

'women orders bad cheers and nah with gravy' and 'What has a bowel of child, or even cups and cheese ever done to you that you would withhold their gravy?'

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 13/08/2020 09:26

When people list all the things going wrong in the world at the moment, that abomination should make top 3 for sure 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

SleepingStandingUp

LOL. It has cheered me up this morning Grin

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 13/08/2020 09:27

I can only agree with this being an ABOMINATION!

and I love beetroot with cottage pie or stovies!

I am not sure what is unsettling me the most, peas and salad or tomatoes and gravy, lettuce and mash ...it just get worse the more you contemplate it. YIKES!

Confusedismyname · 13/08/2020 09:34

Some of the replies have made me chuckle this morning.

We’re staying in the hotel for a few days on a groupon, so I didn’t have to pay any extra for the meal. I had been out walking all day and just wanted to eat something quick and go back to the room and shower. Luckily, I’d had a lovely lunch so wasn’t starving or I would have send it back. I’d already waited ages for it and like I said I wanted to go to bed.

Wondering if bowel of a child is on the menu for tonight. 😃

FWIW I love chips and gravy.

Nowt wrong with chips and gravy, but salad and gravy - ugh!!!!!

Yesyoudoknowme · 13/08/2020 09:40

I adore gravy but this is truly disgusting....

EBearhug · 13/08/2020 09:43

I like lettuce in gravy, but it is a private vice, not one to be served in a restaurant.

stayathomer · 13/08/2020 09:44

And I googled it- I thought it was a british dish I'd never heard of (am in Ireland) Grin

ThisLittleLady · 13/08/2020 09:45

Ugh! Who would put salad on that plate?? Maybe that’s their idea of meat and two veg but no thanks! Loads more to choose from - broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, carrots, mushrooms, even peppers if the meal suited it. But not tomatoe and cucumber. NO.

AriesTheRam · 13/08/2020 09:45

Good lord I can imagine the pictures 😜😜

I'm not even a fan of lettuce with got food as it is, never have it on a toasted Subway for example. I don't think I could have pushed through and eaten the rest

AdaColeman · 13/08/2020 09:58

Looks as though they were just trying to fill the plate up a bit, it’s a typical little “pub salad garnish” served ubiquitously around here.

I quite like that combination of contrasts between cold crunchy salad and hot soft foods such as moussaka, lasagna, fish pie, so I often serve them together.

smittenkittennn · 13/08/2020 10:01

My guess is someone in the kitchen was just lazy and dumped gravy on the whole plate.

GarlicMonkey · 13/08/2020 10:16

My fiancé would ask for that. He has gallons of gravy on everything. He even covers quiche in the stuff.

longwayoff · 13/08/2020 10:16

Chips and cheese. Vile yet beloved by many. Chips, cheese and gravy, even worse yet beloved by Canadians as Poutine. Sorry Canada but no.
