to put something in the space between two garages

There is a gap of about two feet between my garage and my neighbour's, and I'm not sure who owns it - it's just the boundary really. Anyway, today I put an old boulder (about the size of a brick) in there out of the way, and my neighbour (elderly but still perfectly OK and not with any issues I know about), came charging out to complain. Are they just being a bit batty? I mean, the world is crisis with disease and the economy tanking, and someone is worried about that? Are people just getting hung up on silly pettiness with lockdown, or did I commit some heinous faux pas?

Yes, she’s being batty.
However, going forward, are you able to find out who owns that strip of land?
It might be useful to know in case of future disputes, eg, a new neighbour moves in and starts storing bikes or logs in there.

Anordinarymum · 12/08/2020 21:55

I think with land in between boundaries people think if they just put one thing there, and then another, and then another.. the other party feels if they don't say something the other person will take ownership.

Take your brick away.

Grobagsforever · 12/08/2020 21:58

@Anordinarymum seriously? Literally who has the bandwidth to care and so petty?

On the other hand, today it’s a brick. How is she to know that tomorrow it won’t be another brick and a tyre? And then another few bricks, a bag of old cement, and a wheelbarrow? And then suddenly the empty space has been turned into your dumping ground for shite?

longtimecomin · 12/08/2020 22:11

It will be owned, get the land registry documents from when you purchased your property and check them. I guess it's for maintaining both garages so if it gets filled with stuff, access is tricky.

I agree with you.
TheRosariojewels · 12/08/2020 22:12

Maybe they were concerned it was a trip hazard.

Lurkingforawhile · 12/08/2020 22:13

If you own your house check your legal report. It will have a redline plan of the land you own. Even if you own it your neighbour might have rights over it. The report should have this in it.

Your attitude is the shitty one Grobags. I’m sick to death of reading generalisations like yours. What the fuck would you have done differently in their place? What are you doing now to pass on the wealth and opportunities you don’t realise you're accumulating and hoarding?

OP move your boulder.

Thisismytimetoshine · 12/08/2020 22:54

I wouldn't want it silting up with a load of old shite either, if I was your neighbour.

Why did you put a brick in there "out of the way" anyway?
It would have been out of the way in your garage. Or your bin.

sixlemons · 12/08/2020 22:56

Some vile and totally unnecessary unpleasant comments about the neighbour on here.

Might be worth saving your contemptuous bile until after the OP has found out who actually owns the land.

MumsyMumIAmNot · 12/08/2020 22:58

YABU get your brick away from his garage wall.

Felifox · 12/08/2020 23:08

It's probably access for repairs, anyway who would want a gap to become a dumping ground? Irrelevant what age your neighbour is.

BoomBoomsCousin · 12/08/2020 23:16

What were your neighbour’s objections? And why did you want a boulder there?

I would be unhappy with anything that might touch the walls of the garages or encourage debris to touch the walls. The gap is there to make it easy to keep debris away and prevent damp. Could this be their concern?

jackdawdawn · 12/08/2020 23:59

I'm not 'dumping' anything, and never have done. Just set it in there out of the road until can perhaps take it to the beach. Just a large stone fgs, bit heavy for bin, don't want anyone to trip on it. Not bothering anyone, invisible from view. Living in a suburb, I think the 'Dentons' from League of Gentlemen are not much of a caricature sometimes. I think she is a very isolated woman and I think it may be affecting her mental health.

Sorry, @Grobagsforever, I'm not with you.

What crisis did we 60-somethings cause?

So, OP, you dump a largeish rock into the gap between the garages which is there so that both homeowners can get to the gutters etc for maintenance, and you don't even know who owns the land, but your neighbour is the one with MH issues when she complains about it?

I think assuming you can dump crap on land that might be yours, or might be your neighbours, or might be her right of way for bins or whatever, is taking the piss, frankly.

Check your deeds, make sure that strip is yours and that there are no easements before you start making judgments, she might have had every right to complain.
