To want to know when we can stop wearing face masks?

That's about the size of it. I loathe the bastarding things for every possible reason. Obviously I have to wear them because I don't have a reason not to (I could perfectly easily pretend, in order to obtain exemption, though this would seem unfair on the people who genuinely can't wear them). But AIBU to want to know when we will be allowed to stop with this nonsense? Does the R rate have to reach a certain target? Does there have to be a vaccination? WTF will make a difference? Why has nobody given us any indication?

NEVER

Get used to it

There will be another ‘panademic’ in the new few years.

They know how easily we can be controlled now

knittingaddict · 20/08/2020 20:12

Oh please.

firstimemamma · 20/08/2020 20:18

@ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress I think masks are only effective in the way u describe if actually used correctly. Many people seem to not be doing this.

Where I live the masks are either doing nothing to help or perhaps even making the problem worse as people are being incredibly unhygienic with them and then touching them and everything in the shops. If the government are going to force us to wear masks but not provide any clear guidelines on how to use them correctly (e.g remove with care, put straight in wash if cloth) then it's simply not worthwhile. All just my opinion of course, I could be wrong.

Today I saw a woman whose mask fell to the ground in the street. It was blown around in the dirt for a fair while. She picked it up, put it on then went into savers and started shopping 🤢

Wishfulthinking1977 · 20/08/2020 20:55

@helenadove dreadful isn't it! Where I live small town sw the shops are empty! The sales are mental! They are literally begging people to go in as the discounts are 'in store only!!' radio adverts are constantly trying to get shoppers back! Online delivery's are booked weeks in advance! The 3 main cities within our radius are ghost town's! Only things that now have queues are the takeaways, pubs and restaurants! Telling isn't it! Xx

HeIenaDove · 20/08/2020 23:51

Yep Same here.

user1468867871 · 21/08/2020 00:57

It is quite clear they are here to stay. It will be reviewed 6 months after being introduced. We are following France, Belgium, Portugal, Germany and Spain And some US states. so masks will be mandated everywhere outside home and then the next step is inside the home.

ParlezVouzWronglais · 21/08/2020 01:11

Some people do wear them day to day we’ve always seen lots of Asian people wearing them. We’ll just have to get used to it. If they can, so can we.

Gingerfish91 · 21/08/2020 03:46

I’m with you. I hate them. I usually shop a lot but only go out for stuff I need now. I’m better off financially though!

lovemelongtime · 21/08/2020 03:56

Perhaps when people stop dying! Or when there's a vaccine.

RaspberryRuff · 21/08/2020 08:54

They wear them because their cities are filthy polluted holes. We most certainly do not need to get used to them because they do.
RaspberryRuff · 21/08/2020 08:55

Perhaps when people stop dying!

So never then, as people will now be dying from Coronavirus forever. It’s just going to be one of many things that picks off pensioners and vulnerable people in winter, similar to flu now.

gingerbiscuits · 21/08/2020 08:55

Seriously?? "Why has nobody told us when we can stop wearing them?" ....because nobody knows!! This has never happened before & things change constantly! Jesus. We all hate wearing them but, plain & simple, it's the rules right now & FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY!

Diceroll · 21/08/2020 08:58

What masks are people wearing where they ride up into their eyes?

Maizeyflowers · 21/08/2020 12:16

Are people choosing to not go for days out due to needing masks? Or are you still doing indoor outings?

Personally I have choosen not too. There's an imagination town near me for 7s and under. They have reopened. Would love to take my son. But it says masks for over 11s. Encourages one adult per child. Yet you can sit one meter away from the play area and eat. If I take my two year old to a play thing I want to be able to smile at him and other children. It just seems weird so I'm not doing it.

I appreciate that's just my view.

Also cinemas. What's the point if you can't stuff your face and share a coke lol!

purpleme12 · 21/08/2020 15:48

I don't know what I'll do about soft play. I just don't know if I can do it having to wear a mask. Not relaxing at all

Cinemas you can take them off to eat they say. But anyway people will just take it off when the lights go out in reality let's face it

chickenyhead · 21/08/2020 16:02

I hate wearing the masks too, I get sweaty and can't see through my glasses. Nothing about wearing them is normal and for many they heighten anxiety rather than calm it.

We are vulnerable, including my kids but I would never say wearing a mask is pleasant for anyone. In fact I have a heightened respect for medical professionals now.

I think that the lack of information on this and other contingencies sucks. They know a lot more about the virus now, but aren't updating the guidance.

By tarring all with the same restrictions they are increasing resentment of those needing protection. Who mostly are happy for special measures to be confined to them.

But, to be honest, nobody but us are wearing them here, and as the government advisors have stated, the population have had enough.

I think it will stop being a thing for the non vulnerable by April, if not before.

yawnsvillex · 21/08/2020 16:11

@Maizeyflowers I'm the same as you. Actively avoiding anywhere where we have to wear masks.

No JOY in any of it.

I've been avoiding anywhere masks are mandatory in protest. But we did go to soft play this week. I'd say about 20% adults if that were wearing masks. Not sure if that's the same everywhere where I live. Or people took them off while playing as it's hot.
Wishfulthinking1977 · 21/08/2020 21:40

@Maizeyflowers yes we are avoiding anywhere they are needed! Only places I go into wearing my lanyard and badge are little local shops if I forgot something in my online order or to pay for fuel! I run in and out as quickly as possible to save myself abuse! Xx

JoanWilderbeast · 21/08/2020 21:52

I'm wearing one in shops because it's "law" but wearing one outside in general is an overstep I'm willing to subvert.

Echobelly · 21/08/2020 21:56

I expect it'll be by the end of next year - it sounds like by then there is likely to be enough mitigation one way or another. It could even slow down next spring/summer I suppose, but there might be a tendency to wear them by choice for a lot of people.

I think a vaccine is the only chance of us getting at least a rough idea when it will stop, otherwise it'll likely be a more gradual thing.

FiveToFour · 21/08/2020 22:04

I think it will stop being a thing for the non vulnerable by April, if not before.

Hmm We are not wearing masks to protect ourselves,we are wearing masks to protect other people.
So if the non vulnerable stop wearing masks the vulnerable will have to stay home.....
How is that fair?

bumblingbovine49 · 22/08/2020 01:49

We have only just seen introduced them on most indoor places in the last couple of weeks. Not even a month ( apart from on public transport which has been about 5-6 weeks')

I am reminded of when I used to travel with my DS when he was very small ' Are we there yet?". Usually 5 mins after we has left

HeIenaDove · 22/08/2020 02:02

@bumblingbovine49 Its nearly TEN weeks since England introduced them on public transport. The rule for public transport was from 15 June.

@Diceroll the medical ones from Boots in my case. Have a read of Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez.

We don't have to wear masks in my country, but my father and I both wore one all day at a hospital last week. No problems whatsoever, if someone had told us we had to wear one every day for the next year it would have been fine. It's really not that difficult Confused
