To wonder why up to 35 is now considered young

I’ve just seen an article where young people are referred to as being up to 35. Aibu to wonder why this is when it used to be 25 maximum that was viewed as a young person.

Depends on context. 35 is young in health care terms

SnuggyBuggy · 19/08/2020 09:24

I think I'd go

0-10 childhood
10-18 adolescence
18-35 young adult
35-50 early middle age
50-65 later middle age
65-80 older adult
80+ elderly

And agree middle age is just another life stage not an insult or something anyone can avoid or resist.

Lex01 · 23/11/2020 01:57

"36-55 middle aged (although pretty sure the majority of under 40’s wouldn’t consider themselves middle aged 😳 technically yes but not really😂"

Well, technically life expectancy for women where I'm from is 85, 36 shouldn't be middle aged. That would mean you were dying at 72, and only people in poor countries with fewer resources are doing that. You can just Google the list of countries by life expectancy to see what I mean. You still have a long life ahead of you in your 30s and its kind of ridiculous to say your middle age at that point, unless you do live in a poor country or you're taking poor care of yourself.

Lex01 · 23/11/2020 02:00

I'm just going to assume anyone who thinks you'll be dead, on average, in your 70s is from a poor nation or just has a very poor diet and lifestyle.

grassisjeweled · 23/11/2020 02:06

I'm middle aged

(weeps into cassette tape collection)

But I'm also Gen X?

I don't gettit!

(Stamps foot)

grassisjeweled · 23/11/2020 02:07

Oops, not Gen X, I'm a millennial.

A middle aged millennial?

amitoooldforthisshit · 23/11/2020 02:40

Because people, in general, are more immature these days a quick glance across this site is proof of that or even better still a look on social media.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 23/11/2020 02:46

I’ve noticed how the references to Millennials are decreasing in the media and moving onto
Gen Z instead. It makes me snigger as I’m Gen X and it was annoying when we were dismissed in favor of the Millenials.🤣

Personally, I consider under-30’s young. 30+ isn’t a “yoof” by any stretch of the imagination. You’re an adult in your 30’s, not middle-aged, but definitely not young. Just an adult.😄

lljkk · 23/11/2020 03:39

Princess Diana was called young when she died, few weeks after her 36th birthday. Not new thing.

GrandTheftWalrus · 23/11/2020 04:03

I turned 36 last week. Other than when I see the number written down I don't feel that old. Nor do I feel middle aged.

I do have a 4yo and am currently pregnant with no 2. That may be keeping me young.

SickToDeathOfThis · 23/11/2020 04:49

Because the Kardashians are turning 40...

malificent7 · 23/11/2020 04:49

Well I am a decrepid 42 year old so this thread has given me a confidence boost. Not.

Caeruleanblue · 23/11/2020 05:01

I think it might be people having children later.
My DM was a GM at 50. I became a GM at 59. So the 'young' members of the family were childfree and enjoying freedom into their 30s. So it was considered young.

CanadianJohn · 23/11/2020 06:00

My 93-year-old sister-in-law insists that she is not old. If pressed, she will admit to getting "older".

SomewhereInbetween1 · 23/11/2020 06:34

All the time my mum still buys me an advent calendar, I'll consider myself young.

Currently 29 Grin

DipSwimSwoosh · 23/11/2020 06:37

My dd was born in 2018. The day she was born on heard on the radio that 1 in 3 girls born that year would live to be 100.

yomellamoHelly · 23/11/2020 06:46

I think that fits with how I view myself. Didn't start a family until I was in my mid-30s. Think that shift in word view makes you feel a lot older.

Lex01 · 23/11/2020 06:51

I don't know why anyone would think 35 is middle-aged in this day and age, and overall scheme of life, it's very young. I know many 90s year olds. 35 is nothing.

Lex01 · 23/11/2020 07:09

"Princess Diana was called young when she died, few weeks after her 36th birthday. Not new thing."

Does anyone think 36 would be a ripe old age to die? Seriously, you have a lot more life left in you at that age. What is wrong with you people?

decoratingnightmare · 23/11/2020 07:29

Average age of menopause is 52.

Perimenopause begins as early as 10 years before that.

So you could be in perimenopause by 41 - makes 35 not seem so young!

LITHIUMcomeasUare · 23/11/2020 07:40

Good for her.
pressedclay · 23/11/2020 07:49

I think it is just a change in culture and potentially health. Compare photographs of your grandparents at your age to how you look and their is likely a big difference. Its still common to see even women in their 40's with smooth youthful skin.

I think terms of young and middle aged or elderly are also wrapped up with consumer issues and marketing and politics. So it depends what marketing group you fit into. Lots of 35 year olds are still single or in couples with no kids so your marketing to them the same as you might a 25 year old interms of fashion, nights out, holidays etc.

diddl · 23/11/2020 07:51

@TableFlowerss

Just googled it

Up to 35 young adult
36-55 middle aged (although pretty sure the majority of under 40’s wouldn’t consider themselves middle aged 😳 technically yes but not really😂

55+ older adults.

I suppose there’s a similar difference between 18-35 as there is to 56- 75 year old.

My goodness I'm only just out of middle age.

I like that!

bluebluezoo · 23/11/2020 07:53

In the 90’s the industry I worked in had a “young candidate of the year” award.

It was 35 and under. 35 is “young”, relatively speaking.

Lex01 · 23/11/2020 07:54

35 is not 41. It's 6 years away from it. That's like saying 12 is basically an adult because it's 6 years away from 18!
