To feel sorry for Scottish children?

Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

YABU in that you obviously don’t pay attention to the weather for the rest of the UK. Or is it just in Scotland that we get the whole of the UK weather mapHmm
Have you been hiding under an English rock op?

thaegumathteth · 12/08/2020 01:23

I grew up in England with English holidays but my kids are being brought up in Scotland. I massively prefer the Scottish timings.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 12/08/2020 02:00

Does it get hot up there?

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/08/2020 02:15

Yabu. Scotland has it right

Im in Northumberland on the border, so in England but actually north of parts of southern Scotland.

It always seems ridiculous to me that our holidays up here are in August when normally the weather has turned here but we swelter at school in July.

So you couldnt be more wrong if you tried OP Grin

TheSandman · 12/08/2020 02:16

Blazers? How Billy Bunter. I'm sure there must be some but I can't recall ever having seen any in any of the High Schools that I've ever been to in the Highlands.

Amortentia · 12/08/2020 03:45

Just out of curiosity I have a question for those who live in the UK but outwith Scotland. Do you know that the days are longer in summer and shorter in winter the further north you go? There’s well over an hours difference between the south of England and the north of Scotland.

I know this might seem like a silly question, but I have encountered quite a few people over the years who have come up to the West coast and been surprised at how rapidly the weather can change . Also, that it barely gets dark in summer or, light in the winter. 😂

Still in the midst of the thunder here! And torrential rain. Typical back to school weather 😂🙈

I'm very jealous of Scotland right now. Not in London but we have hit 30 minimum 5 days on the trot. Lows overnight have been 20 and not a drop of rain.

I am sick of being so hot

Indoctro · 12/08/2020 07:03

My kid first day is today and it's absolutely pouring with rain . Definitely no heatwave in NE Scotland

I’m a gardener and I follow a few gardeners up in Scotland and I am always amazed at how much later everything flowers

AudacityOfHope · 12/08/2020 07:22

There's hail here, plus insane thunder and lightning!

Feels a bit inauspicious given that I'm not thrilled about sending them back anyway...

dementedpixie · 12/08/2020 07:26

Thunder woke me at 3am and the bedroom was lit up for ages. Rain was banging off the ground but its stopped now. Don't know if kids even registered it

I feel sorry for Scottish children because their education system is really very poor.

My D.C. have had nothing short of brilliant schooling, both academically and with additional support. I have one who achieved all she needed for uni over S5/6 and this year DS got all A's in his Highers in S5 so is sitting pretty for uni next year and still has another year at school to achieve more. That's not poor.

Not all of us are subscribers to the spectator- so posting that article is pointless.

Scottish University education is still within reach of people on a low income.
No one pays fees in Scotland.
My DD is entering her last year of Univeristy this year, and will leave without a penny of debt- thanks also to the fact she chose a course that gives a very generous non means tested bursary.

She will start her career with zero student debt.
Not many people in England have that advantage.

I got woken up by a massive thunder noise and couldn't get back to sleep for ages. The rain was literally coming down in sheets it was so heavy, all I could think about was the kids going back in that. Now it's bright, sunny and warm!!
speakout · 12/08/2020 08:23

It is a beautiful cool sunny morning here near Edinburgh- perfect for first day back at school.

JingleCatJingle · 12/08/2020 08:28

NI children have both July and August off (as a by the way).
I think the heatwave got to your brain OP.

combatbarbie · 12/08/2020 08:28

@waytoomuch82 it was good enough for Prince William

My DDs won't be bogged down with student debt when they finish Uni....

And I work in England and have seen plenty illiterate and innumerate young folk..... In fact more than ever these days and given the difference in population numbers I'd take that report with a pinch of salt.

Yeah, that incredible storm last night has really cleared the way for a beautiful day today. I've never seen a storm like it.

Eh??? The comment was about CfE which isn't doing as good a job for Scottish kids as it should be. Prince William didn't go to school in Scotland nor was he subject to CfE.

Yes he went to uni in Scotland and a very good one at that.

Me neither! Was crazy! We had about 12 hours of constant thunder and lightning.

Was blue skies about an hour ago but now very overcast and low cloud.

Quite a few schools relatively locally either closed or late starts etc due to flooding.

TheAquaticDuchess · 12/08/2020 08:53

@Waytoomuch82

Thank you for sharing that article from notorious eugenicist and homophobe Toby Young. I’m sure we all set much store by the opinions of a man who lied about his academic credentials to secure a job in the education sector and complained about schools having disability access ramps.
