To feel sorry for Scottish children?

Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

I lived in Leicester, we always went back about now. We managed.

The first result for a Google of Weather in Spain:

Because Spain has a varied landscape and mainly consists of mountain areas, many different climates can be found in this country (Mediterranean climate, continental climate, maritime climate, desert climate, high mountain climate and even a subtropical climate.). Most people think of Spain as an always sunny and warm country, however this does not always apply. In summer the weather is indeed sunny and warm and even extremely warm in the interior. However this does not apply everywhere for winter months. In large parts of Spain winter months really feel cold and like winter.

Just sayin Smile

14 in rural Perthshire. Cloudy and a bit drizzly.

If people don’t want the “grim up north” myth to perpetrate, then stop perpetrating it! Why does every thread about “the north” end in a discussion of chips or, in this case, fried mars bars! As if everyone in Scotland is huddling round in anoraks in permanent miserable drizzle, heading to the manky chippy for greasy fried Mars Bars (!), then home in the grim fog to eat haggis confused As if!
Your assuming people consider those things grim though .

What's wrong with chips? And if your up north you can get them with cheese and gravy.
Never tried fried Mars bars or pizza but again, that isn't what grim up north is about given the Scottish people I know are proud of the variety of friends for available 😂

DeeTractor · 11/08/2020 09:59

You're just embarrassing yourself now OP.

silver3 · 11/08/2020 09:59

You think I’m the one taking this too seriously .... really?

On this thread, I’ve been called “disgusting” (that was amid the talk of fried mars bars). I have also been told, quite seriously, that I am the reason people want Scottish Independence.

I’m actually all for anyone who wants independence now, Scotland or the Catalans. Obviously, Brexit was a big mistake, but it’s happened now sadly so I would not blame Scotland for going for independence and would support them if that’s what they want. Good for them.

@silver3

Soup - the point is, heatwaves, such as we have had in recent years, can mean that the normal north / south variations don’t always apply. For instance, it was warmer in London yesterday, than the south of France etc. I remember last summer it was in the mid 30s for weeks (I think) and we went to Crete and it felt cooler and much more pleasant because it was about 28 with a breeze.
I'm not sure that has anything to do with how far you think Paris and Edinburgh are from London.
FelicityPike · 11/08/2020 10:01

“The North” as you wrote it doesn’t refer to Scotland, it means the North of England (afaik).
Also (once again) it’s roasting in my part of Ayrshire, 22.5 at the moment. Still not a “heatwave” as such and definitely won’t stop the children going to school tomorrow.

Willow2017 · 11/08/2020 10:01

Scotland isn't the "up north of England" as many people refer to in such a derogatory fashion. it's the northern country in the UK.

I confirm I am most certainly not calling for the Scottish govt to rethink entire policies or systems
But losing 2 weeks of the term would mean having to make it up somewhere else! Why on earth after losing so much school time would we lose another 2 weeks because its a bit warm? Our kids break up quicker than England so losing 2 weeks is not going to happen.

Nobody cares if you don't believe that some places do have deep fried mars bars or not why would we?
Why would you think people take pizzas to a chippy to be fried? Don't you think they can make thier own pizzas? And describing chippys as manky isnt exactly going to win people over. What about chippys in England are they all manky too? What an absurd conclusion.

Btw of course a haggis is a real animal. They have 2 long legs on one side and 2 short legs on the other so they can run around the sides of the mountains without falling over.😄

silver3 · 11/08/2020 10:03

“Why would you think people take pizzas to a chippy to be fried? Don't you think they can make thier own pizzas? “

I rest my case.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Glasgow is about as Northern as Copenhagan.
And it is sweltering in Copenhagen. I've been enjoying seeing photos of my nephews enjoying their paddling pool.

OP I would have not have thought it would be half the temperature at this time of year

if it is 0°c today and tomorrow is going to be twice as hot, what temperature would it be? Double the amount in numbers doesn't mean its twice as hot!! Can you imagine feeling twice as hot (?!) on a day where it is 2°c whereas the previous day was 1°c? I'm baffled by your lack of logic and understanding.

"You think I’m the one taking this too seriously .... really"

Yes, really.

eaglejulesk · 11/08/2020 10:06

I have to confess I'm sitting here in amazement that the temps in Scotland are less than they are where I am - and it's winter here Confused

Don’t be so daft.

That was to Dee.

I have apologised several times for getting the weather wrong yesterday.,.. Bloody hell. Why do some people need to get soooo defensive and pedantic and chippy about everything?

OP posts:
DeeTractor · 11/08/2020 10:10

"I rest my case."

What "case"? That people don't take pizzas (or any other ingredient for that matter) to the chippy to be fried because the chippy makes their own pizza?

(Oh and btw fried pizza actually originated in Italy so if it's "grim" blame them.)

We are not a warm country lol....which is a good job because I would melt into a wee puddle.

Op the defensive one is you. You're the one that keeps coming back to this thread and doubling down on your mistake. You're the one telling us that we're "perpetuating myths" about how "grim" things are here because we have the audacity to talk about cultural differences like deep fried bloody pizza. You could have laughed it off and let the thread die, but you keep coming back for more with the same superior attitude.

SockYarn · 11/08/2020 10:13

To be pedantic - chippies don't make pizza, then deep fry it. The deep-fried, battered pizzas are the very cheap frozen types mostly.

Although many chip shops in Scotland are run by families with Italian heritage and also sell fresh, oven-baked pizza. And lots of other groceries besides.

Blew my mind the first time I went to a chippie "down south" on Merseyside, it was run by a Chinese family, no pizza and you couldn't buy a Turkish Delight and can of beans with your fish supper! And no smoked sausage, just some weird thing called a "saveloy".

TheAquaticDuchess · 11/08/2020 10:13

A deep fried mars bar is a lovely, lovely thing. Worth trying before judging! (The theme of this thread...?)

LaurieMarlow · 11/08/2020 10:14

Look people. Deep fried pizza exists. Denial will get you nowhere.

No you don’t bring the pizza to the chip shop to be fried, what kind of madness is that? 😂

No one is asking you to like it, all the more for the rest of us.

Wherrsmaclickypen · 11/08/2020 10:15

Op - the vast majority of comments have been good-humoured and justified ribbing but if you are going to start expressing your opinions about a nations food specialties as well as their education policies I fear it will not end well. But that’s your intent I suspect.

Churros.

silver3 · 11/08/2020 10:16

I have never in my life heard of fried pizza - am I supposed to? The first time I heard of this was someone on the thread yesterday who was saying you can take pizza into a chip shop (or you can take anything in) and they deep fry it for you. That is why I made the comment. Again, pardon me for not knowing that chip shops can in fact - gasp! - also make their own pizzas and fry them. Christ on the bike!

I think the thing is that when you live somewhere with generally cold weather, your perception of what you'd call 'good weather' is totally different. Where I live, I'd consider it a good day if I can go out without a coat, and exceptionally good if I can go out in short sleeves. I didn't even own a pair of shorts as an adult until I first went on holidays abroad, because I had no need for them. But to me, 20 degrees feels pretty hot because I'm used to 15 or 16. So I'm delighted with 20 degrees heat and would call it a hot day. If you are from London and are used to it reaching 30, 20 degrees is probably still hoodie weather.

So when people get frustrated at the northern parts of the UK being written off as grim places where the sun never shines maybe it's because it's not actually like that. It's not grim, there are sunny days. It's just that someone what we consider to be good weather is probably just 'standard' weather elsewhere.

LaurieMarlow · 11/08/2020 10:21

I don’t think anyone said this, did they?

They said you could get deep fried pizza in a chip shop.
