Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

" Again, pardon me for not knowing that chip shops can in fact - gasp! - also make their own pizzas and fry them. Christ on the bike"

Assuming you live somewhere with chippy though even you must know that you don't take your own stuff there to be cook for God's sake. 😂

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 11/08/2020 10:22

wiktionary it's grim up north

A phrase suggesting that the standard of life in the north of England is poor compared to that in the south.

Depends on who is saying it and why but often includes large swaths of the midlands as well - usually the industrial bit parts though not always just those.

These days often used about culture rather than industrial landscapes or working practises and occupations as they've changed with time.

It's not really anything to do with the weather or any climate differences between north and south England though I can see why a UK idoim would be confusing to a person of another nationality.

SockYarn · 11/08/2020 10:24

OP I lived in Spain. Your post is more akin to someone sitting in Seville in spring, sweltering in an early heatwave where it's 40c, and not realising that it's probably pissing in down in Bilbao or Oviedo.

Same distances. Same concept. If you grew up in Spain, you should know that the climates in Galicia and Malaga aren't the same. Because of all the same factors which make Scottish climate different to London's. Mostly the Atlantic. So why are you not taking the knowledge you have about your OWN country, and applying it elsewhere?

@silver3

I have never in my life heard of fried pizza - am I supposed to? The first time I heard of this was someone on the thread yesterday who was saying you can take pizza into a chip shop (or you can take anything in) and they deep fry it for you. That is why I made the comment. Again, pardon me for not knowing that chip shops can in fact - gasp! - also make their own pizzas and fry them. Christ on the bike!
Well mostly they’ll fry anything they have rather than taking stuff in, but tbh, I know of at least one that would indeed fry stuff you brought in, lol

Fried pizza btw, is amazing... I mean, you know it’s wrong even when you’re eating it, but it’s still great... might even be part of the appeal tbh.

My cousin lives in Spain, she’s ages with my DC and used to come stay with us over the summer, her parents do one parent one language, so while English is her minority language - it is very good, except my uncle is from Yorkshire, not Scotland so occasionally there’s the odd word or phrase that’s unfamiliar...

One visit it was all food, cheese bites from McDonald’s, banana fritters, fried mars bars all got questioned, we ended up having to go, well we don’t like to live up to stereotypes, but if you’re not sure what a food is on a menu it seems it’s safe to assume it’s deep fried in batter Confused rofl.

I know there’s been a few nippy posts, but I think most people are just mildly amused by your post tbh.

silver3 · 11/08/2020 10:28

Are we really now having an argument about fried pizza?

Littlemissdaredevil · 11/08/2020 10:32

Where I grew up on SW England we always had the option of wearing summer uniform or winter uniform for the first half term back in September which was summer dresses in primary or skirt and blouse in secondary (no blazers, ties or jumpers)

PrimalLass · 11/08/2020 10:33

It's not usually 15 degrees different, tbf.

TheNavigator · 11/08/2020 10:33

OP - I think you are the only one having an argument. Everyone else is having a laugh at your ignorance and outrage Grin

Ireallymustgotobed · 11/08/2020 10:39

It’s not that hot here, south east Scotland, maybe 20c once the sea mist clears.

DD is very excited about starting P1 in a summer dress, ankle socks and Mary Jane shoes. They switch to plimsoles inside. Lovely old sandstone school with high ceilings, big rooms and windows so quite cool inside even when it is hot.

Only time we really overheat is visiting family in London/South England, but I don’t feel sorry for them and trust them to take measures to stay cool.

silver3 · 11/08/2020 10:40

Have I dirrctly insulted anyone though? Have I made it personalised? Have I called anyone “ignorant,” “”stupid” - even in the face of a barrage of such insults coming the other way?

You do yourself no favours with personalised posts like that Navigator.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 11/08/2020 10:49

Ouch. The revelation you’re from Spain... a large and hugely varied country is NOT aiding your case here.

ChangeThePassword · 11/08/2020 10:49

If it makes you feel any better op, even gumtree are being in on the act.

Its definitely not 24°C in Edinburgh today though. I think we'll be lucky if we get to 20°C tbh.

OP, you posted something really daft on AIBU and you got a hard time for it. Happens every day on here. Yes there have been a few posters who used insults like 'stupid' and that is unfair, but the majority have been good natured. You are taking this very seriously and just digging a bigger hole now.

DivGirl · 11/08/2020 10:53

I don't think calling you ignorant or outraged is really an insult though.

The harm isn't in not knowing something, it's in not being willing to admit when you're wrong and knowing when it's time to learn something new.

silver3 · 11/08/2020 10:59

Well, do you know what, call me ignorant if it makes you feel better. If I’m ignorant, so be it. At least I can hold my hands up and admit if I’ve got something wrong. As I have done countless times if you bother to even read the thread.

What I am not, is just plain nasty and it makes me very sad when people have to lower themselves to personal insults. As I say, it reflects badly on you.

@silver3

“Why would you think people take pizzas to a chippy to be fried? Don't you think they can make thier own pizzas? “

I rest my case.

Which case? You make no sense at all. You were the one talking about taking pizzas to a chippy myself and others were pointing out wtf should they when chippys made pizzas themselves?
ParisianLady · 11/08/2020 11:03

OP, you got something wrong, you were corrected, you apologised. No big deal. We all make mistakes

You probably helped with the geographical and meteorological education of many other Mumsnetters who weren't aware of the same thing too.

Don't worry yourself, ignore the haters and move on.

P.s sometimes it works the other way...my Ma in Aberdeen said it was 28 degrees a few weeks back. It was 18 here. I laughed at her nonsense, and then realised it was true Grin

luckylavender · 11/08/2020 11:04

@silver3 - OP, maybe you need to take another look at the weather. It's currently 31 in Brighton & rising. No idea where you got 22 from?

icebearforpresident · 11/08/2020 11:05

This thread is hilarious! Trying to imagine the public reaction if wee nic suddenly annoyed today that the schools are not going back to school tomorow because it's a wee bit warm this week 😂

I hope she does, just for shit and giggles. That would be amazing.

I’m in Ayrshire, think it was high teens in my little town yesterday and I wore tights to work. The kids, back to school on Thursday, will be fine in skirts and socks.

No one in the history of Scotland has ever taken their own pizza to a chippy to be deep fried, The chippies sell them. That said there’s one near me which will deep fry any chocolate for you, so if you take a notion for deep fried mini eggs you go buy a bag and they’ll charge you a couple of quid to fry them up. I also get the impression half of this thread are picturing a large oven baked pizza being chucked into the fryer. There’s nothing fresh, organic or unprocessed about a deep fried pizza but they are the food of the gods. Doubly so if you have a pizza crunch. With salt and vinegar.

Sakura7 · 11/08/2020 11:07

At least I can hold my hands up and admit if I’ve got something wrong.

But you keep coming back and arguing with everyone. Honestly, it was a silly mistake, just accept it and let it go. It's not the end of the world.

silver3 · 11/08/2020 11:10

Fgs! The “case” that people will literally take insult over the smallest detail of nothing.

I caught up with this thread this morning and to be honest, I kind of skim read it as some of it was unfortunately quite unpleasant. Yesterday afternoon, I think it was, people were talking about fried mars bars and someone said that she has a chip shop that will fry anything if you take it in and in the same conversation, people were going on about this “pizza crunch” and because of this I got the impression people some were sometimes taking stuff in to be fried, including pizzas if you want.

But so what - why does this even matter?

OP posts:
SleepingStandingUp · 11/08/2020 11:11

It's 22 here, going for storms tho

DeeTractor · 11/08/2020 11:14

"Fgs! The “case” that people will literally take insult over the smallest detail of nothing."

Nobody was insulted though, just confused. 🙄

Dinnafashyersel · 11/08/2020 11:15

You can in fact take your delicacy of choice to some chip shops and have it fried to order.

Our local chippy sells pakora and fritters on rolls but refuses to deep fry pizzas or Mars Bars because the concept offends him. (he makes his own pizzas)

I can go up the road and buy banana fritters coated in syrup, pancakes lathered in cream or churros with sides. I struggle with the angst at deep fried Mars Bars.

My Southern relatives scoff at macaroni pies but happily double carb with the pasta and garlic bread.

silver3 · 11/08/2020 11:19

“if you are going to start expressing your opinions about a nations food specialties as well as their education policies I fear it will not end well.“

“you must know that you don't take your own stuff there to be cook for God's sake.”

This kind of thing..,
