Thought this man was rude but AIBU

So just for context live on a large new build estate, the grounds are absolutely immaculate. We have an artificial grass garden which gives way to our own tarmac drive.

So me and DD(4) were playing football on the grass with bare feet. DD kicked ball onto our tarmac drive so we ended up passing the ball back and forth on the drive.

An old man walks passed staring so I gave a friendly hello, he said straight away “I hope there’s no glass about” and looked at DD feet. I explained that we had just came off the grass and I had asked if she wanted to put shoes on but she didn’t want to. He then turns around and says “monkey see, monkey do” looking at my feet! I said I beg your pardon he said “well monkey see, monkey do” I just said “how rude!” then turned my back on him.

I understand if you were being extremely picky she should have shoes on but it is our own tarmac drive which is absolutely immaculate and we had just come off the turf. AIBU to tell him he was being rude?

Hmm maybe he was staggering because he was ill...better google incubation periods Blush

Definitely 'hammered' as in you could smell alcohol strongly on him?

ILoveFood87 · 21/08/2020 18:48

Well done OP he was rude.

NicEv · 21/08/2020 20:38

This is a joke post right? If not, OP you sound weird , judgemental and like a mean teenager. The pandemic has been awful for the elderly - many people have been totally isolated and denied any social contact. Maybe this man is lonely, lacking social skills or depressed. Some have indeed started drinking more.

There is no evidence whatsoever that this elderly gentleman is a stalker.

He made a throw away comment - just smile and ignore it. Why obsess over such a brief conversation ? Your subsequent behaviour and posts are just plain weird. Why would you shake hands with an elderly neighbour in the middle of a pandemic?! No wonder his hand was limp - I am surprised he offered his hand at all. You sound almost gleeful about the possibility this man is staggering drunk - that isn’t something to be smug about, if it’s true then it’s sad.

Be kind - just be kind.

I really think this must be a joke post!

craggymaggie · 21/08/2020 20:54

OP you sound spiteful and uncaring. Your scathing mockery of an elderly man is most unpleasant.

I'm glad you don't live on my street - and I know you don't because no-one round here has artificial turf in their gardens.

Angelina82 · 21/08/2020 21:20

Oh OP you really are a nasty piece of work aren’t you? I would fucking hate to live near you. Why don’t you get a hobby and leave that poor old man alone. Sad

Sargass0 · 22/08/2020 07:49

OOH a fucking update. How shit.

missmouse101 · 22/08/2020 08:06

It's walking past, not 'passed', OP. But, yes, it was a just a meaningless comment from the man and best ignored.

iklboo · 22/08/2020 08:29

See, I was asking as one of our neighbours has Parkinson's disease. He walks with a stagger, slight slur, limp handshake. But definitely never 'hammered'. Just a nice chap who likes to pass the time of day with neighbours.

WendyHoused · 22/08/2020 08:44

Poor bloke. You sound an absolute nightmare. WTF were you thinking, shaking his hand??

Aposterhasnoname · 22/08/2020 11:25

Saw said man passing my house again late tonight it was 8:45pm and thought it was uncharacteristic

why have I not noticed this man before.

How did you know 8.45 was uncharacteristic if you’d not noticed him before?

Wowzaaa2020 · 22/08/2020 11:49

Some people live in panoramic houses not everyone is necessarily a creep peeping out of their little windows Wink

OP posts:
trappedsincesundaymorn · 22/08/2020 12:37

So it took you a week to decide he was hammered when you shook his hand (you idiot), as you didn't mention anything about him being drunk on "handshake" post.
Do you have a bet on with somebody as to how silly you can make yourself sound? Because if you have then get ready to claim your prize

Wowzaaa2020 · 22/08/2020 12:43

Why do uneducated folk always have to resort to name calling Wink

OP posts:
ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 22/08/2020 12:44

A new build estate isn't what I'd usually imagine as having a nice panorama tbf.
Or do you mean your house looks elongated and flattened like a panoramic photo?

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 22/08/2020 12:45

Because our PhDs in linguistics teach us the meaning of words like panorama?

How come namechangers start goady ageist threads?

So many questions, so little time.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 22/08/2020 12:48

Next time he is passing throw a coconut at him! 🐒

LillianBland · 22/08/2020 12:56

@Wowzaaa2020

Why do uneducated folk always have to resort to name calling Wink
Rude Creepy Weirdo Stalker Uneducated

I think you’re best placed to answer that. Why are you calling an elderly man names?

LillianBland · 22/08/2020 12:58

Welcome to Mumsnet, OP. It’s so good that your first post is having so many extra little incidents, so you can drag it out for longer.

Wowzaaa2020 · 22/08/2020 13:03

PhD in linguistics I bet that’s extremely lucrative Grin

A lot of elderly people are lonely and come from a generation where it would have been considered normal to chat to others.

It is normal to chat to people, but this is Mumsnet where everyone's afraid of their own shadow and all old people are filthy creeps Hmm
