To think schools should not reopen in Sept?

I think that schools should not fully reopen in September and instead be partially reopened to some years. It is just not safe enough to reopen yet. I'd say December at the latest for full reopening. If they can't reopen other smaller places, how can they reopen schools with 1000's of kids? AIBU?
@SueEllenMishke would work better for Secondary School pupils, but that is probably going to be where the main problems are going to be anyway
True.
It would be disastrous for working parents of primary aged children though.

LaurieMarlow · 12/08/2020 11:03

I don’t think it’s appropriate for 11-13 year olds either frankly.

pctmmn · 12/08/2020 11:06

It's perfectly safe. What's the mortality rate for children 0.000001% and is this any different from the seasonal flu?

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 12/08/2020 11:06

YABU

Very very unreasonable. My children need to be back at school.
Dont like it- dont send yours. But leave the rest of us alone and stop with your fear mongering.

52andblue · 12/08/2020 11:07

Potential 11pm announcements by this Govt re Schools are going to be a Thing till next Spring, I think?
Unless they just 'send 'em all back' and leave it to Schools / LA's to sort the mess?
Oh, wait - I predict it will be a mixture of BOTH...

ineedaholidaynow · 12/08/2020 11:24

Thing is @LaurieMarlow they may have to get used to it when the class/year group bubble bursts, and that will happen more than once, or if the person they were sitting next to tests positive and they are treated as a contact.

Better to have a system in place that might reduce that happening, smaller classes so can SD, but also to have a system that can be activated for all pupils if bubbles burst or indeed the school has to close due to teachers falling sick.

Hopefully, in areas where the rate is low it may not be a problem, but where there are currently issues you can pretty much guarantee school life is going to be disrupted for many months

guilttripjourno · 12/08/2020 11:33

Same here - I don't want to send my kids to school. I am ok with a very basic online learning. Option should be given.

This is what worries me. I'm classed as being in an area of real concern. However, the ward data shows that my ward and the two surrounding wards have had zero cases in at least the last 28 days and infection rates were very, very low anyway.
If the continue to look at large areas instead of specific wards there are going to be real issues.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 12/08/2020 11:52

@pctmmn makes me laugh when people say what's the fuss about, there is no risk to children! It's not about that really is it? The point is children can spread it, to family members and to teachers, which is more than enough to start it all off again.

ineedaholidaynow · 12/08/2020 11:52

@SueEllenMishke my understanding is they will keep schools open even in local lockdown areas, however, once someone tests positive in the school that is when self isolation and bubbles bursting will kick in.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 12/08/2020 11:54

@SueEllenMishke it's better than the alternative of them not going at all, or just doing every other week!

But it will cause huge issues for working parents. I'm expected to work full time -how will that work if DS is only in half a day?

Fingers crossed.

I'm confident schools will open in September and it will go better than a lot of ppl think. We need more of a can do attitude in this country rather than constant doom and gloom. We need to learn to live with this virus we cannot put our lives on hold indefinitely.

I hope you are right but the odds are against it without sufficient caution around Covid transmission.

Are you a teacher? Do you think they should take unreasonable risks for your "can do" attitude? Or are they entitled to the same protection as everyone else?

I hope you think they are entitled to protection.

Gingerfish91 · 12/08/2020 12:24

Are you nuts?! Cases may be higher at present but hospital admissions and deaths remain steady. Our children have missed so much education.

We have to get back to normal and live with this virus.

PablosHoney · 12/08/2020 12:32

I work at a school and want to go back and want my kids to go back.

Maybe that’s because the vulnerable were shielding and children weren’t in school in the main to take the virus home to family members.

Yes we should all just think positively and it'll all be fine. It's all you doomsters and gloomsters that cause the problem! You're making us all miserable! We got this far without much planning for a pandemic and look at our record so far, it's record breaking! We'll all be fine by Christmas you'll see..we'll all be raising a glass to our whizz of a Prime Minister for being a jolly good chap and keeping our spirits up!

Ilovegreentomatoes · 12/08/2020 15:17

@Shalaalaa yes your right.Far better to fall on the side of caution and lock ourselves up till xmas.

Pumpkinnose · 12/08/2020 15:18

Won’t be any better in December so might as well get on with it. Couldn’t understand all the parents in June saying oh I’m going to wait til September. Clearly the pandemic wasn’t going anywhere and surely the autumn/winter is going to be worse. Unfortunately I think we need to just get on with it. The effect on our kids and are economy is just too great. I’m disappointed they couldn’t find some school for the summer - they had enough time to prepare. I think individual schools have been doing and amazing job with very little sensible guidance from central govt.
