Like the seaside but not crazy about it?

Am I being reasonable? I prefer a pool and nice resort? I am not crazy on it but do enjoy walks every now and again for different scenery but can’t stand staying on a beach all day? Am I the only one? I prefer forests, riverside walk and pools much nicer.

YANBU. I like the coast because I love a good view but I find the beach quite annoying - either stones that are hard to walk on or sand that sticks and gets everywhere! Much prefer a pool if I’m going to swim, or a forest/wood if I’m going to walk (more variety/less exposed and windy).

Lou573 · 09/08/2020 09:11

The opposite! Can’t understand why people swim in a busy chlorinated pool on holiday when you usually have the beautiful ocean right next door.

howdidigettobe50something · 09/08/2020 09:11

Yes if I'm somewhere hot I'm with you on that. Definitely prefer to be by a pool than on a beach all day. All of the sweating with sand everywhere is really annoying. However, a walk with the dogs along a (not crowded) beach is fantastic though. We've been doing that in West Wales this week.

TheoriginalLEM · 09/08/2020 09:12

I live by the sea, stony beach which i prefer. I love it. I love it in the winter!

I love eating my lunch on the groynes, i love rock pools and fossil hunting

But a day on the beach?? No thanks. Tourists ( of which im sometimes one), no shade unless i lug huge parasol. Sand everywhere, other people. Screaming kids.

YANBU

I like beaches in their natural state. Hare resort beaches packed with sun loungers and umbrellas as far as the eye can see.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/08/2020 09:14

It depends what type of seaside you’re talking about. U.K. or abroad? Benidorm or Bermuda? Blackpool or Blackpool Sands (the latter is very different)? Sandy or pebbly?

I love a root through a rock pool or two or finding beachy treasures on the shore. And I find watching strong waves mesmerising.

We’ve just come back from a hol on the Jurassic Coast - now that’s an interesting “seaside”. Didn’t go near a sandy beach though. My kids are teen boys and not interesting in sunbathing, neither is DH and I could only lie there for an hour or so before I got bored or too hot like an oven ready turkey.

Sockmonster23 · 09/08/2020 09:17

I only like it for a change of scenery but that’s about it! Can’t stand it for sunbathing or swimming. I don’t know why , think I am the only one 🤣 the sand annoys me , if it’s pebbly that annoys me too.

I'm not mad keen on beaches...I like them for a walk, but actually spending all day on one...no thanks. I hate sand. Much prefer to lay beside a pool.

LittleBearPad · 09/08/2020 09:18

The Sand!!

I would much rather walk along a wet windy beach than lie on one.

I’d also rather lie by a pool.

To clarify I like walking on beaches in their natural state. Not one for sitting on them at all.

I live a stone's throw from a beautiful little beach. The noise is so therapeutic. Been here 5 years and haven't sat on it yet! Walking along, maybe a paddle along the shoreline with the ddogs /dc...
Our bedroom is facing it and we sleep with the window open drifting off to it's waves. Amazing.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/08/2020 09:28

We live on the coast, I love walks along the beach in the evening or in winter. Can't stand whole days on the beach. Generally we just throw wetsuits on and drive down there, swim and play and drive home again normally about 4pm when the tourists are heading back to their accommodation we don't tend to hang about on the actual beach despite being lively and sandy.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/08/2020 09:28

*lovely and sandy Confused

The80sweregreat · 09/08/2020 09:31

Not mad on either activity , as it's so boring even with a good book to read or a lovely view! Swimming pools are ok but other people annoy me and sand is the enemy !
That's why I'm a such a pain on holiday! 😀 I also am aware of my very fat belly so I have to cover up which isn't good.
I Hate hot weather too ( I know I'm hard to please!)
Have done all the above with children as that's what you do on holiday but I'd rather go for a walk or visit an attraction!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 09/08/2020 09:44

Completely depends on the beach.
I'd love being on a beautiful beach with pale sand and palm trees. Love swimming in a clear turquiose sea.
Cannot stand being sat there all day though. I'm the one cowering under an umbrella from the sun. Swim, dry off for a bit then done.

notheragain4 · 09/08/2020 09:49

I do like the seaside but not enough to sit in traffic and struggle to find a parking space for it.

The80sweregreat · 09/08/2020 09:50

How some people can sit on a beach or around a swimming pool all day amaze me!
I admire them to be honest, as I just can't do it! Some people have a capacity to just like hot weather and look cool as well!

hadley222 · 09/08/2020 09:51

I'm with the OP on this one. I choose places for holidays where there are other things to do, and try where possible also to go where I speak some of the local language.

LunaNorth · 09/08/2020 09:54

@Feralkidsatthecampsite please may I ask whereabouts you live?

I’m looking to move to the coast in the next couple of years, and I dream of being right on the beach like you. Houses like that are thin on the ground though, it seems.

MakeItRain · 09/08/2020 10:03

I don't like spending a day on the beach. But I love walking along one and I love the sound of the waves. I prefer to holiday somewhere very, very quiet, so a touristy beach would be completely out of the question for me. I loved beach holidays when I was younger though. But these days I don't really like being out in the sun for very long.

When my children were younger we used to holiday in places that had a pool, which we loved and time spent on the beach was usually a bit of a failure for various reasons (weather/sand/ problems with getting food etc!) We usually ended up sticking to the pools!

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 09/08/2020 10:03

There are a few sea view flats for sale - big house conversions. A lovely terrace for less than 100k but no view around my corner..
Near Hartlepool..

LunaNorth · 09/08/2020 10:06

Thanks @Feralkidsatthecampsite. Am currently in Northumberland on holiday, so not a million miles away. Gorgeous coast around here.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/08/2020 10:14

YANBU, I’ve been abroad many times and avoid the beach 😊.
In fact some of our best summer holidays abroad have been in Austria in August (mid - high 20s) in a 50 bed chalet type hotel with a lovely outdoor pool, with views of mountains.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/08/2020 10:17

TBH it’s good that people who don’t like the sea/beach stay away. More room for those of us who love it.
