Like the seaside but not crazy about it?

Am I being reasonable? I prefer a pool and nice resort? I am not crazy on it but do enjoy walks every now and again for different scenery but can’t stand staying on a beach all day? Am I the only one? I prefer forests, riverside walk and pools much nicer.

I love the beach, but not when they're ridiculously crowded. I lived right by a beach at uni and we spent so much time there, revising was much better sat listening to the sea! In the summer though when they're busy I can't be as arsed, although DS loves it so tend to go to ones with a pier etc now, whereas out of choice I like the ones you can explore.

devildeepbluesea · 09/08/2020 10:25

I used to be the same as you OP. Only this year I have started sea swimming again, I can't understand why I didn't do it previously! This is where I am right now. Perfection. But I'm not one for sitting on a beach all day. We'll go for a few hours, swim a few times, do some rockpooling then go.

I'm not a big fan of either beaches or pools. OK to swim for a while, then maybe lie and read for an hour, then I want to get up and do something. I don't go on holiday to lie about, I like to see new places and do things.

JadesRollerDisco · 09/08/2020 11:06

I like beaches for walks and scenery, pools for swimming. I find sand stressful and stones painful. When I swim I like to just do peaceful lengths without being worried about waves smacking me in the face, or getting stung by jelly fish or eaten by sharks (ok that's a bit dramatic, but that's how I feel!)

I have had a few pleasant days at the beach on holiday which stand out as some of the better days of my life, but those beaches were private/secluded/non touristy, the weather was just right and the water was fairly still. Usually beaches you had to walk to and jumping in to the sea after a walk in the sun and scenery seemed right. I do not have that feeling about Bournemouth beach though! I much prefer it on cold clear winter days (no swimming) than in crazy crowds. I would rather sit in a paddling pool !

Puddingpi · 09/08/2020 11:11

Really can’t stand the beach. Thankfully, the kids don’t like it either. Sand always whipping about, too windy, sand getting in clothes, it’s boring to just sit there and you end up lugging loads of stuff about to make it bearable. You need to take towels so you can dry off if you have a paddle but then they have sand all over them too. Ugh. I also don’t like heat. Having said all that, I’ve never been abroad so no idea what beaches are like in other countries. I quite like walking along a beach when it’s evening time and quiet or along a cliff side walk, but certainly not when it’s hot or busy. I’d rather have a view of the sea than be indoors. It’s better to look at than experience.

I also find the sea quite scary! It is wild and unpredictable and noisy. The noise of the wind and the sea makes me feel stressed. I can’t swim so also wouldn’t sit near a pool. We tend to do lots of days out visiting attractions and I like to be near forest or countryside.

I live by the beach in Australia. I also have a pool. I love them both! The beach here is glorious, turquoise water, white sand and uncrowded, I go all the time as it does my heart and soul good! But cocktails in the pool on a hot day is hard to beat!

PuppyMonkey · 09/08/2020 11:14

I’m not a big fan of a beach, I think they’re a bit annoying with all the sand etc and can’t stand the faffing about getting “stuff” ready to take along.

Also while a view of the sea is ok, imho it would get quite boring looking out at blue sea/grey sea all day. I’d prefer a view of sweeping hills, trees, cute little cottages etc.

Toothsil · 09/08/2020 11:57

I don't like touristy beaches but we live on the Northumberland coast and I love the beaches round here for walking, rock pooling and spending time with DD. I couldn't just lie on a beach all day.

The80sweregreat · 09/08/2020 12:00

Beach huts are a good idea to rent if your not keen on sand! A few resorts have ones you can hire for the day or the week!

corythatwas · 09/08/2020 12:02

I love the seaside but sitting still on a crowded beach all day would be my idea of hell. Walking along beaches, rock-pooling, looking for fossils, swimming, bird-watching- all those thing.

Would hate lying beside a pool, though: on holiday I want nature.

corythatwas · 09/08/2020 12:05

Never thought of a sea-view as boring. My parents are currently holed up shielding in a house that overlooks the sea and my mother says it's what keeps her going: seeing how the sea changes, how you can tell what weather is coming from watching the direction of the wind and the colour of the waves at the horizon, watching ships go by and working out what they are and where they're going. One of my favourite things is watching a thunderstorm over the sea.

bakingbernie · 09/08/2020 12:09

I hate sand with an absolute passion! My parents both smoked and used to stub their cigarettes out in the sand. At the end of a day we would be surrounded by 'fag ends'. Because of that I now have a phobia about seeing cigarette ends on the sand along with all the other litter that accumulates. I remember reading a few years ago about E. coli in beach sand which I also hate to think about.

Lelophants · 09/08/2020 13:01

I love a good costal walk and a paddle but I don't find the view changes as much as mountains or forests say.

Prefer the Caribbean sea tbh Grin

ChristmasFluff · 09/08/2020 13:09

I love the beach - so I live 2 minutes away from one.

There's nothing better than a day on the beach, smothered in factor 50 and sunblock, reading a book and going for a dip when it gets too hot. So relaxing - nothing quite like it.

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 09/08/2020 14:48

LunaNorth I have sent you a PM.

InTheWings · 09/08/2020 17:13

I love beaches. Deserted dunes or cheerfully busy resorts, tropical white sand or North Sea shingle.

We are not bored. I love swimming in the sea, we spent years digging systems of channels for bucketfuls if water, giant complicated sandcastles, speedboats or policecars dug into the sand for the kids to sit in, elaborately decorated sand birthday cakes...

Beach olympics, kite flying, just sitting aiming at a target stone with pebbles. People watching, reading, listening to the waves and the sea birds.

I have enjoyed it when we have been lucky enough to have our own pool at a villa (twice) but I don’t like busy pools with crammed sunbeds, and I don’t like the smell of chlorine.

Also enjoy rivers, lakes, upland walks, and ‘wild swimming’ in becks or lakes.

Love beaches in winter, and rain too.

Tired of a beach, tired of life Wink

Me too.
FoolsAssassin · 09/08/2020 17:18

Not a beach fan really, don’t mind a walk in winter and I don’t do sitting around a pool. Living near the coast is totally wasted on me.

Forests and woods however I love and bring me a sense of peace I rarely find in other places .

draughtycatflap · 09/08/2020 17:29

A beach consists of sand; and potentially palm trees, loungers and cocktails.

Whoever invented nasty uncomfortable pebbles can just do one. It’s not a beach it’s a shoreline.

Sockmonster23 · 09/08/2020 20:28

I much prefer activities holidays and walking in forests! Love Switzerland too! I can’t do the beach for long. We used to go abroad every summer and go to the beach a lot and I like it As kid for a little while but remember feeling very bored quite quickly.. When we finally went on an activity holiday doing loads of stuff I was so happy..

Can’t spend a day on the beach at all.. I find forests and Woods so much more soothing and hate sand and pebbles lol

.. I thought I was odd when my friends said you preferred going to Luxor Egypt and Sight seeing and a cruise on the Nile no way! as she said she could sit on the beach for hours and do nothing but that would bore me, a nice pool resort with lots of excursions for me. Glad I’m not the only one.
