To tell you about my mini heart attack last night?

Ok so it's not an actual heart attack, but DP and I were in bed last night, just gone up. Suddenly we heard this weird barking noise from downstairs, sounded like a scratching sound. DP went to check and couldn't see anything, our 2 year old was fast asleep, as was our cat. Yet every time we settled back in bed to sleep came this weird sound. I was utterly convinced it was a mouse or a rat and I was terrified! So DP volunteers to sleep downstairs to see if he can find out what the noise is. 5 minutes later he comes running up to tell me a hedgehog had come out from behind the couch and was now nestled in in cupboard under the stairs :) I've never been so relieved ! But those sounds nearly gave me a heart attack! I'm petrified of mice and rats, but our little prickly friend was very cute. We fed and watered him and set him back outside in the garden, after naming him Harry (Harry Potter - cupboard under the stairs) :)

Ahh OP how cute! He’ll be a frequent visitor now (hopefully to the garden)

Angiefernackerpan · 08/08/2020 08:10

How lovely! Hedgehogs are brilliant. We were watching Hellboy once and at a critical juncture suddenly heard eldritch screaming sounds from the kitchen. It scared the shit out of us. Turned out it was a large frog that had hopped through the back door. Every time our confused cat gently patted it, it screamed. We released it into the garden.

I think you should change your thread title and seek help for your attention-seeking. Grin

ShirleyPhallus · 08/08/2020 08:16

Nice little flash of a chest beard in the background too ;)

Cute! How’d he get in unnoticed? Presuming you had your back door open all day yesterday and he sneaked in?

TalkingtotheCat · 08/08/2020 08:28

Yes, we had the back door open for most of the day now that it is so warm. It is an enclosed back garden so usually we keep it open for the cat to come and go as she wants. He must have sneaked in at some point yesterday and evaded the cat completely! I hope he comes back again, I was googling hedgehog houses last night at 2am Grin

We had hedgehogs at our old house.loved them. Ate all the slugs. None here at all but all fenced are hedgehog proof round here.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 08/08/2020 08:42

We got woken up by the noise of hedgehogs mating a couple of weeks ago. They may look cute and sweet but they sure can shag for hours!

Fatherbrownsbicycle · 08/08/2020 08:50

Wow! I wonder how it gets n and out of your garden if it’s enclosed? They roam quite far at night.
I saw my first one the other week running up the road. They are very fast. I’ve been googling hedgehog house and hope it will hibernate in our garden for the winter - it definitely visits as has left poop in our garden.
There is a pp on another thread who leaves food out and they visit every night.

labazsisgoingmad · 08/08/2020 08:58

we rescue hedgehogs and if they are trapped or being attacked they make the most awful noises that will make your hair stand on end. lots of folk think they are silent but they certainly are not

VictoriaBun · 08/08/2020 09:01

Yes fully agree they are gorgeous , but sadly full of fleas. Make sure your pets are fully up to date with their treatments.

julybaby32 · 08/08/2020 09:05

Second changing the title.
"cutest ever uninvited guest"

CigarsofthePharoahs · 08/08/2020 09:06

There used to be a badass hedgehog living near my old house. I saw it sauntering across the green Infront of the houses. There was a loose circle of neighborhood cats around it all doing the "You go first, no YOU go first." thing.
Hedgehog didn't care, it just sauntered off under a bush and all the cats looked embarrassed.

HerculePoirotsGreyCells · 08/08/2020 09:15

Awww gorgeous hoggy! We feed our visiting hedgehog and have done for the last 3 years. DD and DH built a hoggy diner for them.

TalkingtotheCat · 08/08/2020 09:24

I think there is an small entry point between fence panels that the cat has been squeezing through, so hedgehog probably came through that. We have a garden shed that we think he could have been living in. I hope he comes back, he can eat the cat biscuits I bought for the cat that she refuses to eat Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 08/08/2020 09:34

We have a regular, hector is very huge and we have a feeding station for him but cos hes on a diet we only put a small handful of cat biscuits out for him every other night. 😁
We have a house in the garden but he doesn't seem interested in it, the feeding station is a big plastic box with a square cut out and a lid so we can feed him and not the neighbourhood cat posse! I bought DH a wildlife camera that is motion activated and we have some lovely footage of him scuffling about going for his dinner in his box.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 08/08/2020 09:50

I hope for your sake OP that he doesn't have a lady hedgehog "friend". Seriously, hedgehogs shagging are as noisy as hell. Grin

sashh · 08/08/2020 10:02

Keep putting out water and cat food, and don't worry if catfood attracts slugs, the hedgehogs will eat them.

Some of my visitors from a couple of years ago.

WrongKindOfFace · 08/08/2020 10:04

Hedgehogs are cute, but I’d de flea everywhere!

sashh · 08/08/2020 10:06

lots of folk think they are silent but they certainly are not

I swear I have heard one purr after feeding.

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 08/08/2020 10:07

Post a while ago regarding noises on a bush were suggested as hedgehogs having sex - until the poster quashed that idea being as one of the couple requested a finger up the bum!!

TalkingtotheCat · 08/08/2020 10:16

@Feralkidsatthecampsite haha! @sashh you are so right, the noises I heard last night sounded to me like a rat chewing through a wall.... and I'm so terrified of rats and mice! I love those pics of your little friend :)

We have an enclosed garden but a hedgehog once got in via the garage.

LakieLady · 08/08/2020 10:23

I was walking the dog late one evening, and heard a heavy breathing sound behind me. I looked round, couldn't see anyone, carried on but could still hear it.

When the dog stopped for a sniff and a pee, we were overtaken by a huffing, puffing hedgehog! He was in a hurry too, and because he had his legs fully extended, I could see that they are much longer than I had previously thought.

They can travel surprisingly quickly too. Lovely animals.
