AIBU?

To wonder why we still use PayPal?

I hate PayPal.
Yet again, they are holding my money for no reason except from their ‘own internal security reviews’ . I’m forced to use PayPal because the platform I’m using insists on it. For YEARS I’ve had issue after issue with PayPal in various ways, through eBay, and other sites where there’s been no other option. Yet through my bank I have a million tools to send money safely globally, and at a far cheaper rate. Anyone else mad at PayPal? Angry

Never a problem

Another who has never had any issues with PayPal. I pretty much only ever use it to buy things - from a range of shops online - it occasionally to send a friend/family some money.

I always buy through PayPal if the option is there. I have 3 different accounts connected to 3 email addresses and 2 banks in 2 countries.
Never had a problem.
Wouldn't use anything else.

Interesting @speakout
Do you sell globally ?

I moved abroad, tried to transfer 10k entirely legitimately.

They held onto it for four months, worries about "money laundering" they claimed.

Many attempts to email were sent into an eternal loop of automated answers. In the end a very good friend helped me get through to a human in Belgium and they released the funds.

But I will never use them again. Ten thousand pounds! Without doubt they were simply trying to keep hold of it.

I use it for personal and business use and don't have any issues... apart from the fees.

I'm with you OP.
Nightmare to deal with.
Only way through was to find email address of CEO and write to him directly.
Had 4 months of "but the computer says"
Never used them again.

It's the rapacious incoming eBay fees that fuck me off.

The rest of it is v. convenient and I use it quite regularly.

Stripe is the way forward, the fees per transaction are less too

I use it mainly as a buyer and have had no problems at all over many years. It's brilliant in my books.

@alterego2 - I've changed my password a few times and it's always been easy - they've never asked for my original password, that sounds odd!

I will use it as a buyer quite happily but I’d never accept it as a payment method. My customers can use cheque, bank transfer or credit card but never PayPal

I've had problems galore, mainly due to international relocation and travel. They periodically (but inconsistently) freaked when I accessed my account from a country other than the one where I opened and verified the account - even though the original verification information is still accurate.

When I moved back to the UK (from the US), I used my account for months and then it was suddenly locked. I had to "prove my identity" (upload the face page of my passport, but at least via a link to a secure site) to unlock my account. I lucked out massively because the rep they assigned me was a guy from NI living in the USA, so he understood the "I'm legally a tax resident of multiple countries" situation.

Anyway, they advised me to open and verify a separate account for the UK. I did, but then they locked that - ostensibly because I accessed it "repeatedly" from France. (Um ... it's not that far away?) I happened to have no balance at the time so haven't bothered to unlock it. I've had no further trouble with the US account. It's all strange to me because I would have thought a lot of people would want to access Paypal while travelling or moving, and that Paypal would want/be able to accommodate that.

Had it over 15 years never any problems. I sold on ebay but not as a business. People are more likely to leave a complaint review than a good one.it offers protection as pp said and checking out is so easy. I love paypal.

Been using it for years as a seller. Never had any issues, so far.

Another PayPal lover here too. Had to use the PayPal resolution tool a couple of times and if a business wouldn’t accept PayPal I might think twice about using them as I’d loose that buyer protection.

I often buy via Facebook groups too where PayPal is the only way you are allowed to ask for payment.

I'm a seller on ebay and not had any issues with PayPal, so far so good.
There was a buyer who tried to claim they didn't buy anything from us, but PayPal sorted it out within 24hours. The buyer had bought twice with us and left us positive feedback 😑 so not sure what happened there. That's just an issue with the buyer though, but it was sorted out pretty quickly

I've used Stripe for 3 years and never had a single problem.

I've had 1 problem with PayPal and they were utter shite. Completely shit personalised item was sent and I tried to claim with lots of evidence it was shit. Apparently customised items aren't covered by their t&cs! So you can send a completely terrible customised item costing over £100 and get away scot free! Not in my world. Piss off PayPal.

I've never had an issue with PayPal and have been known to not buy something online if PayPal isn't a payment option.

I haven't had any problems with PayPal, but then I'm not a seller. As a buyer online, I prefer to use Apple Pay where I can.

I must have been lucky because the account I most use is attached to a UK bank account but accessed from Italy.
Buying and selling, while my Italian bank account PayPal is used to receive monthly payments for 2 jobs I do with a UK contractor!
It kind of just worked out that way.

PayPal is the reason I got my money back for cancelled flights from Ryanair looooong before they started dishing out refunds. So it’s a thumbs up from me. Even if it is still in my maiden name 10 years after I got married because its a faff to change it

I like it as a buyer but its awful as, a seller. I had to jump through a lot of hoops trying to resolve an issue when withdrawing money. I got different answers from their tech support and when I responded got generic rejections and automated responses. It took months to resolve. Frustrating the evidence I got to finally resolve my problem was the thing I sent the first time. I avoid it wherever possible now.
