To wonder why we still use PayPal?

I hate PayPal.
Yet again, they are holding my money for no reason except from their ‘own internal security reviews’ . I’m forced to use PayPal because the platform I’m using insists on it. For YEARS I’ve had issue after issue with PayPal in various ways, through eBay, and other sites where there’s been no other option. Yet through my bank I have a million tools to send money safely globally, and at a far cheaper rate. Anyone else mad at PayPal? Angry

In the 10 odd years I’ve been using paypal - I cannot day I’ve ever had 1 issue with them, at all.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 07/08/2020 20:17

Ebay is gradually switching to managed payments for sellers so PayPal won't necessarily get the same level of custom they have had. Buyers will be able to pay in many ways all going through the managed payments system so PayPal won't be the default method.

@alterego2

Yes me. I have forgotten my password. Every time I request a new password they email me a link that asks me to login - with my original password - to set a new one.

I CAN'T do that because I have FORGOTTEN it.

Pointless waste of space.

(This is where some wise and clever MNer comes and tells me how it is done. Hopefully)

Yep! Me too. Very silly.

@Therollockingrogue

I think though as a buyer I’d be absolutely gutted to know the seller had received no money while I was merrily enjoying my new purchase. Especially if it was something that somebody had created especially.
I think lots of people are using it for major retailers like Boots or H&M, so that's not really something they need to worry about.
Naticus · 07/08/2020 20:21

I use as a seller and buyer and so far have had no issues, must have been using it for well over 10 years now.

Handy for Facebook buy and sell sites as long as you use G&S you're covered if there's any issues with the transaction (like seller not actually sending).

Lancrelady80 · 07/08/2020 20:22

Only issue I have is that after 12 years, repeated phone calls and a certified copy of my marriage certificate, they still won't let me change to my married name. Causes issues if I have to collect a package and they want proof of ID, as I always have to take my marriage certificate with me and explain the circumstances.

lifeafter50 · 07/08/2020 20:24

I'm puzzled by this because has always worked well for me.
There were two occasions (in gazillions of transactions) when the seller was playing silly buggers. In both cases funds were returned to me immediately.
Definitely prefer this payment means over others.

Naticus · 07/08/2020 20:28

@Therollockingrogue

They do say they’re waiting until the buyer confirms receipt. But then when the buyer does this, the funds are still not released. I’ll look at stripe . It seems so many buyers love to use PayPal and do so with no issue. But for sellers it’s often a different story.
Do you add the tracking info to the transaction in PayPal?
DarkDarkNight · 07/08/2020 20:28

I use it all the time and I love it. Used it for years and they’ve only ever held my money once, when I sold something on eBay after a long break so I’m guessing it was a security check or I’d reached some limit.

They’ve sorted issues I’ve had no problems and I love the convenience of it. I do a big eye roll if I’m shopping online and the site doesn’t have paypal as it’s just so much easier than getting my card out.

mintich · 07/08/2020 20:29

They withheld £2000 from me for the best part of a year. Never used it again

Therollockingrogue · 07/08/2020 20:30

@naticus yes but I use an independent courier as items are huge and heavy. So it’s not the tracking offered by eg , Hermes et

PayPal had me jump through hoops to set up a business account - weeks of admin, and having to re-send it a couple of times as well. I can't go with Stripe or Square because so many people use my line of work fraudulently, they've ruined it for the people who are trying to make an honest buck.

flirtygirl · 07/08/2020 20:33

Paypal has been doing this to people for over a decade op. The people on this thread may well love it as it is currently working for them but they will soon sing a different tune if it happens to them. A buyer may well never see a problem.

I am very wary with PayPal and transfer any funds out ASAP. I never let my funds sit in there as I have seen the problems and paypal customer service is known to be wilfully useless.

They do not protect every buyer also, they have some awful policies on both sides as I've come across them as both buyer and seller.

And yes the blocked account for no reason thing is a well known thing with PayPal in many countries and nothing to do with accepting payments as friends or family. Typical that op gets accused of this by people.

There are other platforms out there now, if I was an artist I'd accept any of them instead.

Paypal and ebay have been separate businesses for the last couple of years so there will be more separation from ebay over the next few years with different payment option coming online. Ebay wrote about this back in 2018.

Try emailing the UK PayPal ceo you may get some help that way. Good luck op.

Dodie66 · 07/08/2020 20:34

I use it for buying and selling on eBay and Etsy. I;m a business seller. I also use it for sending larger amounts to a relative in the USA.no problems since I started using it about 18 years ago

sirfredfredgeorge · 07/08/2020 20:37

Of course the buyers like it, they're the ones who are getting the protection, as a business seller you factor that in - being out of pocket because the funds aren't released until the person receives it is simply a cost of doing business.

The alternative as a seller is simply to take credit cards, it's not expensive, but again you don't get the money quickly. The reason you don't get the money up front is that too many "businesses" disappear with the money, either because they are scammers or they are genuinely bankrupt. That's why credit cards and paypal have to delay payment.

notacooldad · 07/08/2020 20:38

I am always forgetting my password. It just sends a link to my email and let's me put a new one in.

Staffy1 · 07/08/2020 20:40

I love PayPal, I hate it when websites don't have it as an option.

Waveysnail · 07/08/2020 20:42

Nope. Love pay pal. Saved on my phone. Dead easy to use. Never had issues

RollercoasterRaver · 07/08/2020 20:44

I love PayPal and have never had an issue, I've used it this week to pay for Dominos, eBay, Screwfix and some other sites that accept it.

I've also used it as a seller on eBay and again, no issues. Can you elaborate?

luckylavender · 07/08/2020 20:48

I really like PayPal. Never had a problem. Bought & sold on eBay & if buying online I always chose PayPal if it's an option as it's so easy.

jessstan2 · 07/08/2020 20:50

I've never had a problem with paypal and not aware of them having any of my money, never mind withholding it. They just pay using my debit or credit card, it's quick and simple. I suppose they must get a fee from someone but it's not me.

Therollockingrogue · 07/08/2020 20:52

So everybody seems to love PayPal on my PayPal hating thread Grin
It won’t change my mind though unfortunately...
I’m going to do everything I can to boycott.
Thanks @flirtygirl I’m relieved that someone understands where I’m coming from !

WatchingFromTheWings · 07/08/2020 20:53

I've used PayPal as an eBay buyer for probably 17 years now. Only used it as a seller maybe a dozen times but not for 12/13 years. More recently other retailers have been using it also. Never had a problem.

steff13 · 07/08/2020 20:55

Just because there are many us citizens that never venture out of 1 state in their life doesn't mean it's the way the world works.

How snide and unnecessary.

Therollockingrogue · 07/08/2020 20:57

I wouldn’t imagine buyers would really have issues tbh. It works for PayPal to make transactions smooth , especially for buyers shopping with major retailers.
