Hi,

I have got a very big dilemma. Since lockdown, me, huby and three kids have barely been out of the town where we live. We have done local walks etc but not had any major days out or trips away.

For the past two days, my huby has been looking online at holidays and there are some really good deals for Turkey in the first week of September. The huby and kids really want to go but I'm really anxious about it because of the current situation. I am just so worried about what may happen if someone at the hotel we stay at gets infected or if one of us gets infected. I've put my foot down and said no (in a covid free world I would have jumped at the chance), but now i feel so awful. Deep down i really do want to go but i don't know if it's worth the risk and extra stress. Also my mum would be mortified if we want so that worries me a little bit too.

Can anyone offer me some guidance please? What should I do?

They're not back at school then?

Asvan · 06/08/2020 23:38

No, they don't go back to school until the second week of September.

I like a holiday as much as the next person and I’m very relaxed about the whole coronavirus/lockdown thing BUT I am actually quite mortified for the friends I know of who are or have been on holiday because I think it smacks of entitled, pampered, self indulgence to be so desperate to go to a beach for a couple of weeks that you’ll go during an ever changing mask wearing quarantining temperature taking half the places are closed etc and being forced to have a test to get back on the plane home pandemic situation.

But that’s just me.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/08/2020 23:40

Have you factored in the possibility of quarantine?

MaxNormal · 06/08/2020 23:42

I'd go if potentially quarantining wouldn't be a problem for you after.

Asvan · 06/08/2020 23:45

Yes the possibility of quarantining does worry me as well. Theres currently no need to quarantine after a visit to Turkey but that could obviously change any time.

No sorry, I would not be going abroad this year. Can you even get insurance to go?

Asvan · 06/08/2020 23:50

Yes companies are now offering insurance so that's one less thing to worry about.

I am going to Turkey this year in a few weeks. I have worked all through Lockdown supporting vulnerable people, and have literally been to work and Aldi and that's it for months. I am neither entitled or pampered but getting away is genuinely beneficial for my mental health and I need the break.

If you go op you need to ensure you wear a mask everywhere, even on the streets. You will be ok not to when on a sun lounger or in a bar or restaurant. And have a lovely time Smile

ineedaholidaynow · 06/08/2020 23:54

If FCO guidelines change you need to make sure you have insurance that covers that, not just COVID cover

TheMurk · 06/08/2020 23:57

@Cheeseandlobster would be great for my mental health too to have a holiday in the conventional sense but that’s not possible just now.

I don’t believe people can’t wait until next year for a foreign holiday.

Take time off work by all means. But you don’t need to go abroad for a break.

TildaTurnip · 06/08/2020 23:59

I wouldn’t go. How quickly the advice for Spain changed would put me off even if I wanted to (which I wouldn’t anyway!).

Cloudtraffic · 07/08/2020 00:00

You’re not unreasonable for wanting to go at all. Do you think it will be relaxing and stress free though (my definition of a break)? If not is it worth expense and hassle plus possible health threat? I’m lucky as can go abroad if need be (relatives) and not fussed re quarantine as already working from home

onlinelinda · 07/08/2020 00:04

We are going on a week long holiday, but to a very isolated area. Could you consider that?

onlinelinda · 07/08/2020 00:04

And within the uk.

BluebellsGreenbells · 07/08/2020 00:07

The airlines may fold and leave you stranded
You could get ill and find hospitals difficult in another country
You may get ill and need to quarantine for longer abroad
You may have the holiday cancelled a few days in and get stuck
You might go into local quarantine and you defiantly won’t be covered by insurance as the flight will still go
You may have to quarantine in your return

We’ve all been working and under stress. We’d all like the sun to come out
We’d all like a nice cocktail in a fancy bar

But not this year.

I am not putting my faith in a plane full of strangers assuming they have followed government guidelines on hand washing and mask wearing.

Asvan · 07/08/2020 00:08

I've considered a UK holiday but most places are fully booked or too expensive- a week away in Turkey All Inclusive will work out cheaper than anything I've found in the UK.

Money over health

How do you think the government are handling the crisis?

user1471528245 · 07/08/2020 00:23

I’m NHS and I’ll be going to Turkey later in the year, the virus is everywhere, you have as much chance of catching it in a Tesco’s as Anywhere else in the world, Use a bit of common sense don’t go anywhere crowded wash your hands use face mask same as applies here and if You are concerned don’t visit any elderly relative for a couple weeks when you get back, I find it strange All these people saying they won’t go abroad but are still planning holidays to crowded U.K locations, And getting on a plane is no different to getting on any other public transport. Turkey actually have lower infection and death rates than us and are on a par with Germany, we need to get back to some level of normality otherwise we’ll all be stuck at home for years to come

480Widdio · 07/08/2020 00:36

Definitely don’t book yet,Covid cases are rising rapidly in Turkey, according to news this evening there is a high likelihood of lockdowns etc.

Have a look at the news sites,I don’t see anything good at all with regards to Covid.

Survivingchipandkippee · 07/08/2020 01:00

The rest of your family may be feeling disappointed but go with your gut.

tankflybos · 07/08/2020 01:11

"I’m NHS and I’ll be going to Turkey later in the year, the virus is everywhere, you have as much chance of catching it in a Tesco’s as Anywhere else in the world"

Confused yes but it's not about you catching it is it? As for "I'm NHS".....does that mean you know best because honestly, you appear to have missed some key factors in this.

Londongirl888 · 07/08/2020 01:31

As others I love a beach holiday.

I wouldn’t go things are changing daily

could you monitor and go last minute if you are that desperate for a break.

Notimeforaname · 07/08/2020 01:56

I'll be (hopefully) going to Greece in a couple of weeks.
If the plane is leaving and the accommodation is open, I'll be there for sure.

D2h18 · 07/08/2020 02:03

I'f you're comfortable going away and you can handle quarantine if worst comes to worst then go. Follow government advice and guidelines they know best.

On a positive note you're supporting millions of people who work in the travel sector who's jobs and lives have been on thin ice for months 🙂
