To desparately want to go abroad this summer.

Hi,

I have got a very big dilemma. Since lockdown, me, huby and three kids have barely been out of the town where we live. We have done local walks etc but not had any major days out or trips away.

For the past two days, my huby has been looking online at holidays and there are some really good deals for Turkey in the first week of September. The huby and kids really want to go but I'm really anxious about it because of the current situation. I am just so worried about what may happen if someone at the hotel we stay at gets infected or if one of us gets infected. I've put my foot down and said no (in a covid free world I would have jumped at the chance), but now i feel so awful. Deep down i really do want to go but i don't know if it's worth the risk and extra stress. Also my mum would be mortified if we want so that worries me a little bit too.

Can anyone offer me some guidance please? What should I do?

Was talking to lady who is my podiatrist this week, she is due to go there in September ( she is collecting a small sailing boat her and her husband have bought , yes. I know!!)
The lady who she is dealing with in Turkey re the sale has told her that Turkey and Greece have a higher number of cases than is actually known of because they don’t give out the true figures.
I can’t say if this is correct or not but I don’t honestly think I would want to risk it the way things are at present.
My podiatrist has said she is really reconsidering her trip.

rookiemere · 07/08/2020 09:18

I wouldn't book anything just now. If you wait until a few days before you would go, you'd have a much better idea of current situation.

I get you - I really do - so wish we'd managed to get abroad in this brief window as I think FCO advice and quarantine will kick in soon for just about everywhere.

There must be somewhere available in UK if you look at self catering rentals you can sometimes get them with pools and games rooms.

minnieok · 07/08/2020 09:27

Why not book a hotel in the uk - hotels are offering very cheap rooms currently (self catering is very expensive) especially in September as schools are back (back on 1st here)

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 07/08/2020 09:43

The holidays you've seen advertised are cheap for a reason Hmm

As long as you can afford to lose the money if the holiday doesn't happen, or is hugely disrupted, and be prepared that you may need to quarantine when you return (and/or when you arrive, for the duration of the holiday).

I rarely go abroad because of the footprint of flying, and definitely taking my holidays in the UK this year.

Porcupineinwaiting · 07/08/2020 09:49

What is your budget if you dont mind me asking? Am assuming you arent up for a week self catering in the uk if Turkey is cheaper.

HolyCorona · 07/08/2020 09:57

@Asvan why would your mum be embarrassed?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 07/08/2020 10:02

I wouldn’t be going either, a lot of risk for a non essential and can’t imagine it’s very enjoyable either with lots of places closed, not knowing if quarantine will come in or worse and you can’t fly back. Not to mention the thought of being ill in another country especially children.

The virus doesn’t spread by itself, it needs hosts to carry from place to place.

Stompythedinosaur · 07/08/2020 10:05

I couldn't work out which way round the voting is - YABU to go, YANBU to say no.

There's a bleeding global pandemic. Don't go overseas just because you fancy a holiday.

SmileyClare · 07/08/2020 10:06

How are you pronouncing huby? I'm seeing Hugh-be. Grin

You say you haven't been out of your town, no day trips or anything? It doesn't have to be abroad or nothing!

Surely there's some middle ground there? Why not plan some UK days out or a week away? That doesn't have to be expensive.

Bluewavescrashing · 07/08/2020 10:15

IMO it's not worth the hassle. I wouldn't feel relaxed.

Luckily DH and I did a European city break in early Feb (without the DCs) and we are going to Cornwall self catering. Weather looks good. Just glad to be going somewhere.

katscamel · 07/08/2020 10:32

Your biggest issues will be the need to quarantine when you arrive back in the UK (unless the airport tests have been introduced and seen as effective) and what to do if the country goes into lockdown and you can't get home.
As someone currently overseas for work I can tell you all about the frustration/anger/upset when a flight booked is cancelled due to restrictions being introduced / extended and how airlines can be a bit crap when you're trying to sort out alternatives.
At the moment, things in Turkey seem relatively ok according to friends living over there but that can change overnight.
As much as you need a holiday maybe leave it until later to book.

tankflybos · 07/08/2020 10:38

"How are you pronouncing huby? I'm seeing Hugh-be." GrinGrin

ghostyslovesheets · 07/08/2020 10:39

I'd do it - I'm in France now and it's wonderful - also masks everywhere - not allowed in without one and not allowed in shops until you have used hand sanitiser - people are following the rules and it feels very safe

ghostyslovesheets · 07/08/2020 10:41

To add - we can quarantine for 14 days when we return as well so no worries there

Eng123 · 07/08/2020 11:38

Why do people focus on boarders? It's no more risky to visit a town in France than a town in the north of England just because of the boarder. If I travelled 500miles north I'd be in Scotland, 500 miles south one of three EU countries - really what is the difference?

Hingeandbracket · 07/08/2020 11:45

What boarders?

MiniCooperLover · 07/08/2020 11:57

OP, a thread like this is never going to be able to make your mind up for you. You'll get a lot of 'I would', some 'oh no way, how can ups even consider it' etc. Keep an open eye on the news, wait until a few days before and if Turkey (or wherever you are planning) is looking open and reasonably healthy in these weird times then make your decision. I'm hoping to do a 4 night DH/child free trip to Crete soon but I'll book it 2 or 3 days before.

minipie · 07/08/2020 12:12

YANBU at all for wanting a lovely holiday.

Personally I would look into ways to do it but reduce the risk. Self catering rather than hotel, for a start. Very limited social contact for the week before. Try to go earlier, late August, so that you have time between returning and school (appreciate this may be more expensive, but there are good deals around).

HathorX · 07/08/2020 12:15

I would not go, due to it being so close to the return to school I would not want to put other kids at any more risk than necessary.

You say you have not been anywhere since all this started, but that describes most of us too!
Since school hols started, I've driven 15 mins to a shopping centre once, been to an out-of-town play area once, and for our summer hols we spent a few nights at a relative's flat on the coast.

I don't see an overseas vacation as being worth the risk. Can't you plan some really nice day trips, maybe stay away for a night somewhere?

Eng123 · 07/08/2020 12:58

Oops! Borders not boarders!

ThisAintNoPartyThisAintNoDisco · 07/08/2020 13:04

I can understand why you feel tempted. I am too a bit.

I just think no matter how desperately I want to go, it won’t be half as desperate as I’ll feel wanting to get home if we get stuck somewhere or locked in quarantine. And that puts me right off the idea 😬

flumposie · 07/08/2020 13:05

I would love to be in the sea or outside . But as much as they are 2 of my favourite things I would not want to be abroad if I caught it. I'm venturing to London instead because if anything happens or changes whilst there I know I can get home.

I8toys · 07/08/2020 13:07

We are going to Dubrovnik next week hopefully. We are not worried if the quarantine rules change as schools are off and I can work from home.

Places in the country are packed, beaches will be rammed today. I would rather go somewhere else tbh.

timeforawine · 07/08/2020 13:22

I'd do it, i think schools may be expecting some children being in quarantine given how fast things are changing
I'd leave booking as late as possible

Hobbesmanc · 07/08/2020 13:29

Just back from a totally glorious week in Greece. Booked last minute and no regrets.
