Wtaf Trump mispronouncing Yosemite

Doingtheboxerbeat · 05/08/2020 23:26

Yosemite along with Arkansas often comes up on threads about words/names that are often mispronounce because a lot of us on MN are not American, so it's all good.
BUT, the US president mispronouncing Yosemite is a bridge too far at this point and I'm having to clean up my living room at this late hour due to my head exploding.
He has got to be trolling us, surely?

Mrstwiddle, now I feel bad sad. I was raised to never mock the afflicted and I suspect that I may be on that particular spectrum myself, but Trump never misses an opportunity to make minorities feel less than.

Well you could start by not referring to dyslexic people as "the afflicted." And what "particular spectrum" do you speak of? I'm familiar with the autistic spectrum but since when was there a dyslexia spectrum?
Oh and don't feel bad about mocking Trump because a) he's probably not dyslexic, just plain dumb and b) he was happy to mock a physically disabled journalist.

JanMeyer · 06/08/2020 10:33

As per my previous posts, I was brought up with never mock the afflicted but I also believe that if you live by the sword you die by the sword.

Seriously can you stop referring to people with disabilities/special needs as "the afflicted?"

Ohtherewearethen · 06/08/2020 10:37

How weird that @9PointsOnMyLicence seems to think that a 74 year old should be excused for making silly errors because he is 74. Maybe he ought to be excused from being POTUS on account of his advanced years and blatant lack of capacity. That and the fact that he's a thick, racist, homophobic, sex pest who wants to fuck his own daughter.
The comment along the lines of, 'you're lucky no one in your family mispronounced a word' really made me chuckle.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 06/08/2020 10:38

It appears his cognitive impairment is getting worse. I agree that the 25th Amendment won't be enacted because the Republicans are able to get away with loads whilst they have him in office. They are running amok behind the scenes whilst Trump distracts everyone with his Twitter feed. A very useful puppet, much like our own PM.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 06/08/2020 10:40

@JanMeyer, I think you need to calm your jets, and realise it was just a figure of speech and I was sort of trying to apologise for anyone who might be offended.

Reagan had dementia when he was in office.

IamTomHanks · 06/08/2020 10:52

Reagan had dementia when he was in office.

Reagan had competent people around him and no access to Twitter. Same with Roosevelt.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 06/08/2020 13:10

Gosh with current and a few former post holders - is this office of the land not protected with checks and balances to ensure any mental capacity and intellectual issues are dealt with by say removal on national health and safety grounds? Or is it respectfully a part of the job description to say blend in with a certain national demographic etc?

I would have thought the best and most able would make for greatnesses in leadership? Not that we necessarily have that in the UK though. Seems like Covid has also levelled up the global leadership community and so far USA and Brazil plus India are at the most Covid useless end and Taiwan and New Zealand are best in class and both women incidentally by the way!

lljkk · 06/08/2020 13:42

"Yo-sem-ite / Yo-seh-mites" is what he said. He said it To rhyme with semite as in middle eastern ethnic people. In a speech about a federal programme to enable American kids to get better access to amazing places. It was his job to announce something important in that moment.

The rampant corruption of his administration is what upsets me. His lazy speech & ignorance is all part of how little he cares about doing the right thing.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 06/08/2020 14:23

Speaking of dementia and aging, I know this is ageist, but it genuinely worries me that the two main presidential candidates will be 74 and almost 78 this November. The POTUS is an extremely demanding job, both physically and mentally, and I personally think it’s better suited to younger ppl. I know Biden will pick a younger V-P in case he’s incapacitated, but still.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 06/08/2020 14:52

@AmICrazyorWhat2

Sure I get your point and for those ultra sensitive about inadvertent offence you have to be super young and super short sighted to not appreciate that one day we will eventually all be old with malfunctioning bits etc. Therefore arguably in the right context like this thread about oldies going for the top job, I do not in the slightest find it ageists but factually accurate and correct. Indeed with the youthful leader of Finland just recently married and the likes of the highly capable and liked New Zealand leader and the chap in charge of Austria who I believe is also very young but evidently capable and with the right skill sets including people skills - which you would have thought makes for better return ballot outcomes for those who are aiming for re-election etc.

The two main USA candidates would be considered age/health inappropriate and high risk in many younger populations around the globe and perhaps more ideal (not Orange one obviously) to remain background consultants given their experience etc. Ironically aren't they both pointing out the same old age character assassination attacks on each other anyway? Surely there are intelligent young sparks who are both capable and can unite rather than polarise American politics? I am thinking along lines of actual patriots and not pretend ones causing a dysfunctional polarised state to the continued astonishment of the globe.

mrsBtheparker · 06/08/2020 15:13

I was once asked for a password on the phone, it was declined, after quite a bit of to-ing and fro-ing once I offered to spell it everything was fine, he hadn't heard it pronounced before.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 06/08/2020 16:16

This sums up you know who quite well!:

Trump claims Covid will disappear because 'things go away'

Published on Aug 5, 2020
Donald Trump says he expects the coronavirus to just go away: 'No question in my mind it will go away. Hopefully sooner rather than later.' The US president adds that children who contract Covid-19 are able to 'throw it off very easily', as he bids for schools in the US to open

Trump again claims Covid-19 will 'go away' as Fauci warns of long road ahead â–º www.theguardian.com/us-news/2...

iklboo · 06/08/2020 16:35

It's got nothing to do with people being ageist. I'll bet my last quid he wouldn't have been able to pronounce it at 24 either because he just doesn't care. It's not like it's a brand new word that's just emerged into common parlance. And he should be checking his speeches with his advisors. But he's so astoundingly arrogant he doesn't defer to them.

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/08/2020 16:48

It's equivalent would be Boris pronouncing the Dales as Da-Les.

It's not exactly a hardly ever used word...

Pobblebonk · 06/08/2020 17:14

What this also shows is that, before making important announcements like this, he doesn't bother to read through speeches first, otherwise he could have checked on this pronunciation if he had any doubt. That's incredibly lazy

lljkk · 06/08/2020 17:15

Reagan's advanced age was a huge recurringly discussed issue in 1980 election. Now it's considered bad taste to mention age and instead must pretend ageing doesn't happen. Frustrating.

That said, if I have to choose doddery Joe over amoral doddery Trump, that's an easy choice to make.

lljkk · 06/08/2020 17:20

... Trump mispronouncing this is indeed as if Johnson had talked about the "Izzlee" of Mann, mentioned terrorists incidents in "" or said it was a shame about the "Ligh-cester" lockdown restrictions.

Lelophants · 06/08/2020 17:20

Well he was never going to be nice to California 🙈

Lelophants · 06/08/2020 17:20

But yes. Madness.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 06/08/2020 17:22

@lljkk yes, pick the best of the dodderers.🤣

2Rebecca · 06/08/2020 17:23

I have no idea how to pronounce it or what/ where it is. If I was talking about it and was an important person I'd ensure I knew though

MistyMinge2 · 06/08/2020 17:28

He's either got dementia or he's taking something that dumbs him down (more than usual). He's not dyslexic. I know plenty of highly intelligent dyslexic people.

Miafey · 06/08/2020 17:39

I dont think he has dementia I just think he's extremely unacadrmic. It's clear he struggles to read, which is a real problem seeing that it results in him failing to read intelligence briefings, or meaningfully study policy/legislation.

Miafey · 06/08/2020 17:44

You heard me, unacadrmic Grin
