Wtaf Trump mispronouncing Yosemite

Doingtheboxerbeat · 05/08/2020 23:26

Yosemite along with Arkansas often comes up on threads about words/names that are often mispronounce because a lot of us on MN are not American, so it's all good.
BUT, the US president mispronouncing Yosemite is a bridge too far at this point and I'm having to clean up my living room at this late hour due to my head exploding.
He has got to be trolling us, surely?

I'm no Trump fan. And I agree that he often talks a load of crap. But getting the pitchforks out over a mispronunciation (by a 74 year old) is beyond absurd.
You're lucky that no-one in your family has ever mispronounced a word.[/quote]
Again - we are talking about one of the most famous national parks in the US and not a normal 74 year old.

It's a totally bizarre thing as an American not to know how it's pronounced.

If he had mispronounced "Worcestershire* (as in the sauce and U.K. county incorrectly (as many Americans do by pronouncing it phonetically rather than "woostershire") then no big deal.

Can't you see the difference?

9PointsOnMyLicence · 06/08/2020 01:44

""If he had mispronounced "Worcestershire* (as in the sauce and U.K. county incorrectly (as many Americans do by pronouncing it phonetically rather than "woostershire") then no big deal."

My mum is 74. She thinks it's called Worcester Sauce not Worcestershire Sauce. Burn the witch!

Justgivemewine · 06/08/2020 01:46

Is that you Donald?

DioneTheDiabolist · 06/08/2020 01:48

Is your mother the elected leader of the region containing Worcestershire 9points? Does she make statements about it to the press?

Yes but I'm going to take a bet that your mother doesn't have access to nuclear weapons nor do her mispronunciations have the potential to impact confidence in the US economy...
NaNaNaNaNaNaBaNaNa · 06/08/2020 01:54

I was more concerned with the interview where he said the USA was doing well compared to "The World", seemingly oblivious to the fact that the USA is actually in The World.

Shucks, you've nailed me. Mum is a renowned, world authority on Worcester Sauce. She first introduced it to spag bol long before it became trendy.
ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 06/08/2020 01:54

No surprises any more or is it "fake news" and "real" orange tan trumpanzee.

He's the best on Covid as always merica first!

Only expect the unexpected with dysfunctional merica folks as at least no anarchy or civil war (yet)!

I do believe there are more intelligent and capable people there but just not "in charge". Dr Anthony Fauci springs to mind. He evidently knows a bit more about medicine than bleach and fake tan sunshine ape.

Calling out on the obvious for the good of humankind is acceptable and not being nasty in my book as at least we are evidently being truthful and factual which is something that a leader should at least attempt. Would help to understand the basics like reading and writing! Oh wait why is he hiding his (fake) school/college records?

TehBewilderness · 06/08/2020 02:17

That happens a lot because Trump can't read very well.

9PointsOnMyLicence · 06/08/2020 02:24

"Calling out on the obvious for the good of humankind..."

WTF. A word is mispronounced and you're acting in the good of humanity by pointing it out?
I have no words to describe this absurdity.

Only cos it's the Donald. That's the truth of it.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 06/08/2020 02:30

Unfortunately it’s also happened with previous presidents... GW Bush was notorious for mispronouncing words. Try listening to him saying “nuclear.” Cringeworthy in both cases.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 06/08/2020 02:37

@9PointsOnMyLicence, As per my previous posts, I was brought up with never mock the afflicted but I also believe that if you live by the sword you die by the sword. Trump is exactly the type to point and laugh loudly at you for falling over and breaking your hip, so save your sympathy for someone who deserves it.

Also if Boris Johnson pronounced Leicester like Lie-sester or Gloucester like Glou-sester like a lot of non natives do, rather than Lester or Gloster, people would be very concerned.

Orange man bad. Snooty dullards.

Miafey · 06/08/2020 03:07

Some people aren't that clever or knowledgeable and that's fine.

They're probably not ideal candidates for POTUS though (particularly if they also happen to be awful human beings).

Oh yes. Anyone who thinks that the President of the United States ought to be able to correctly pronounce the names of their national parks is a 'snooty dullard'. That's just a magnificent argument Hmm
TW2013 · 06/08/2020 06:45

Reading and writing was one of the early signs of dementia in my mother. I would not be surprised if he is in early stages of dementia.

What amazes me more is that there is still so much support for him in the Republican party. Do they honestly think he is up for another four years of this?

Boris has his flaws, but he has always had those flaws. Trump has his preexisting issues and these now seem to be compounded by declining mental faculties.

CopperBeeches · 06/08/2020 07:45

I also think dementia. I watched my parents. No I think I am seeing a very good friend deteriorate.

Words, complex language, judgement, grasp of concepts, regulation of temper. Maybe not but we should have a wider understanding, (and I mean comprehension rather than making allowances), of the situation. Anyone with cognitive difficulties should not be running the country but I would hope the US systems in place will allow for that.
Maybe he won't get in again.

LemonyFace · 06/08/2020 07:53

@DeRigueurMortis I couldn't agree with you more! It's not about what's said, but rather who's saying it.

Pobblebonk · 06/08/2020 08:08

Given that he used to be much more fluent than he is now, it's clearly got nothing to do with dyslexia, and plenty to do with dementia. Witness also the way he was blatantly struggling to put two logical thoughts together in the recent interview with Swan.

Ginfordinner · 06/08/2020 08:31

So, how did he pronounce Yosemite?

TW2013 · 06/08/2020 08:56

He pronounced it as Yo Semites rather than Yo- sem- i- tee, appeared to realise it was wrong but then said Yo Semites again.

I thought this too. It's worrying TBH.
IamTomHanks · 06/08/2020 09:42

Can you imagine what would have happened if Obama had mispronounced Yosemite? Or any word? Especially if he did it with the frequency that Trump does it.

There would have been cries from the right that he was unfit for office, and obviously not mentally competent. Given that the Republicans were in charge of both houses they probably would have started proceedings to push through the 25th Amendment.

Yet the left calls into question his competency as a President, among increasing signs that he is deteriorating mentally and physically, and we're snooty bastards. Hmm

Serin · 06/08/2020 09:57

I actually felt almost sorry for him in his "We are doing better than errr the world" interview.
The way he was clutching that oversimplified, primary school level, bar chart was tragic and terrifying at the same time.
I hope there are measures in place to deal with a world leader who has declining cognition??

IamTomHanks · 06/08/2020 10:18

The 25th Amendment. However, both Houses would have to pass it and that won't happen while the Republicans hold the Senate.
