So the Govt think we need to tackle obesity as it it such a risk factor for COVID etc etc. Yet they also want us to eat out to help out

I take the OPs point. If at the same the government is restricting deals on unhealthy food in supermarkets and also making it cheaper to eat unhealthy foods in a restaurant, it's a contradiction.

But they're also making it cheaper to eat healthy foods in restaurants. There's nothing stopping you from going out for a salad, or fish and vegetables, or grilled chicken, or pasta, or any number of low-cal options. Why can't people just take responsibility for themselves?!

To me this is a bit like advertising on TV. Just because you watch an ad doesn't mean you must dash out and purchase a whatever if you weren't going to before seeing the ad. I'm no more inclined to go out and eat any more or less than I was before and just because I can now get two for the price of one doesn't mean I'm now going to eat two or go twice as much.

It is not the government's fault people people are fat. And eating out once a week will not make you obese.

@justanotherneighinparadise
Yep they most definitely do.

Please give a link to a peer reviewed medical study that backs this up. When I was at my skinniest (not my healthiest), I pretty much lived on fried bacon butties (with the bread dipped in the bacon fat). I was not overweight because that's all I ate in a day. You could live on buttercream filled chocolate cake and still be thin (again, not healthy) if you only had one piece a day. It really is as simple as CICO (calories in, calories out).

Think about it, if fat and carbs made you fat, everyone in China and India would be huge!

It’s all about choices and taking responsibility for those choices. Lots of restaurants out there which serve healthy food.
