@LittleRa poached egg, chopped tomatoes and wholemeal toast

So loads healthier.

Even a sausage sandwich would have been healthier.

Some people don't have the option of eating at home every day, so actually this is helpful when the alternative is quick grab meals on the go.

LittleRa · 05/08/2020 10:40

@Kelsoooo Sounds lovely 😋 I hadn’t thought of using the scheme for breakfast.

BlogTheBlogger · 05/08/2020 10:42

I think the irony is BJ and JO heading it - 2 overweight men, rich enough to buy the best foods, telling us plebs what to do.

justanotherneighinparadise · 05/08/2020 10:46

I believe all these health agencies actually understand the irony. They are stuck between needing to keep the economy rolling and people not dying. I’ve recently completely overhauled my diet and fat doesn’t make you fat. Fat and carbs make you fat. So you could go into McDonald’s and eat the patties along with some salad and you’d be fine. In the same way you could go to many restaurants and eat the protein choice and leave the carbs. The main problem is the eating advice is dated and scientifically flawed. At some point it will change but fit the moment the food pyramid is wrong.

eaglejulesk · 05/08/2020 10:50

Eating out now and again - even at McDonalds or KFC - won't make someone fat. It's this ridiculous nonsense about 'good' versus 'bad' food which is the root of eating disorders.

LittleMissRedHat · 05/08/2020 10:58

Fat and carbs make you fat

NO, they absolutely DO NOT. Too much of ANYTHING is what makes you fat.

I genuinely don't understand this - who is telling you what to do?

If you want to go out for a meal on certain days of the week you can do so and get it cheaper. Have you misunderstood and thought that the food police are coming round to frogmarch you to your nearest restaurtant and force feed you? Where is the compulsion?

You're coming off as having a massive (half price) chip on your shoulder

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/08/2020 11:01

I got fat on salads and healthy food😁
It's what happens when you eat enough for 2. You will weight as 2🤷🏻

BlogTheBlogger · 05/08/2020 11:07

@lifesalongsong having a chip on my shoulder for having an opinion? Okayyyy....Hmm

BarbaraofSeville · 05/08/2020 11:09

I disagree. People who eat in accordance with the food pyramid, at an appropriate level of calories for their activity level, will not be overweight.

People are overweight because they eat too much and it's easy to eat too much of fatty carby food because it's more calorie dense, palatable and served in portions that are too large for most people. Many restaurant meals are 1-2000 calories, and even more when a couple of alcoholic or sugary drinks are added. So that's often most if not all of a person's daily calories burned.

ButterMeCrumpets · 05/08/2020 11:14

Eating out occasionally does not make you fat. There are always alternatives that are lighter in calories even at McDonald's etc. In fact they publish the nutritional breakdown so it's hardly like they are hiding them.

I battle with my weight all the time but at my slimmest I ate out sensibly. And the weight that I am currently trying to lose came from lockdown, not eating out.

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/08/2020 11:16

I am obese - massively so. I am meeting a friend for lunch today for her birthday. I am actually scared to go and think people will judge me because of it.

If losing weight was so easy I would have so years ago, however mine stems from MH issues following being raped at 18. I am on my 50's now

Billben · 05/08/2020 11:17

@Northernsoulgirl45

Well when you have restaurant chains like Fridays and McDonald's it is hard to make healthy choices. I once ordered a salmon dish from Fridays which came with hardly any veg and a large serving of cheesy mash!
Even if you eat in these restaurants, why can’t you just eat less, healthier, etc at other times to balance it out.

Or would that be taking too much responsibility for yourself and your actions? I guess you couldn’t blame the government then for being fat.

lifesalongsong · 05/08/2020 11:18
@lifesalongsong having a chip on my shoulder for having an opinion? Okayyyy....Hmm
Having a chip on your shoulder as you consider yourself a "pleb" being told what to do.

I don't understand that attitude, why do you feel anyone is telling you what to do?

Trinketsfor20 · 05/08/2020 11:19

We’ve eaten out lots this week on holiday using the £10 scheme. Not one meal was unhealthy.

SeasonFinale · 05/08/2020 11:23

You can choose not to go into restaurants that don't offer healthy choices.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/08/2020 11:31

I don't think I've ever seen a menu of the type served in TGI Friday's that won't swap mash for salad, vegetables, a plain baked potato or similar, or add extra vegetables or salad.

Sounds like some people are asking to be protected from themselves and if that happened they'd then complain that they were being treated like children.

gutentag1 · 05/08/2020 11:40

People need to start taking responsibility for themselves.

I am sick of a few people requiring government intervention on things that should be down to individual common sense and then everyone else being affected.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/08/2020 11:46

But that's absolutely fine if that's what you are looking for that day. There is no problem having large serving of cheesy mash with salmon once in a while🤷🏻
If you want healthy version, swap the mash or order different dish.

Not everything has to be low cal and "healthy". Common sense should be applied

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 05/08/2020 11:48

Jesus. Common sense really has gone out of the window hasn't it. Do you need the Government to tell you how to wipe your bum properly?

WhoWants2Know · 05/08/2020 11:54

I take the OPs point. If at the same the government is restricting deals on unhealthy food in supermarkets and also making it cheaper to eat unhealthy foods in a restaurant, it's a contradiction.

I think it became pretty clear that common sense isn't to be relied upon somewhere around the time people were panic buying all the toilet roll.

TheOrigBrave · 05/08/2020 11:55

I will be taking my son to Nando's on Saturday when we venture into the city centre for the first time since March.
He'll have a treat dinner and I'll have grilled chicken and salad/veg and pinch a few of his chips. I don't think they do the super grain salad any more, that was delicious.
It's perfectly possible to eat out w/o coming out saturated in fat and sugar.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/08/2020 12:02

It's really not. Restaurant - meal, supermarket bogof - bisquits.

Tbh there shouldn't even be a restriction on what food can and cannot be on offer...

MoreListeningLessChatting · 05/08/2020 12:23

I have boys that are fit, healthy and very active. They eat a range of foods and also love a takeaway - everything in balance.

It's up to the individual to take responsibility over what they eat - or move more.

justanotherneighinparadise · 05/08/2020 13:20

Yep they most definitely do.
