I cannot stand loud people

Kind of lighthearted kind of not. I have extreme misophonia.

Door slammers, drawer bangers, high pitched laughs that pierce right through you from your eyeballs to your toes, people who dig their heels into the floor like it's quicksand making the whole room vibrate, crisp crunchers, apple biters, tea slurpers, loud chewers, throat clearers, tutters, booming voices that echo through the walls.

People should come with a remote control... just shut the fuck up! 😫

Righto.

Saucy99 · 02/08/2020 10:40

Your best option is to go live on a desert island

TanteRose · 02/08/2020 10:41

EVERYTHING OK, OP?! Wink

Lipz · 02/08/2020 10:41

Me too. I hate all those things. Around certain people I have to eat with ear phones in.

FourPlasticRings · 02/08/2020 10:43

Have you considered noise-cancelling headphones? Or therapy?

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 02/08/2020 10:49

Correct 🏝

I hate when people are shouting on their phones while taking a train/bus. I came across two such individuals yesterday. They were shouting for the entire duration of the trip.

People in the UK are far too polite to say anything and I am too much of a coward to start an argument with the loud person.

But in my head I am saying “shut up, shut up, shut up”

Enoughnowstop · 02/08/2020 11:16

One of my children is loud. It is a feature of his dyspraxia. He can’t help it. He drives me insane with it but it is also one of the things that makes him the lovely, unique person he is. Nice to k ow he is being judged constantly by people who k ow sod all about him.

Likefootball · 02/08/2020 11:16

I can never understand people who talk loudly on their phones when on public transport.
Do they not mind the rest of the passengers knowing their business?

Ethelfleda · 02/08/2020 11:22

I didn’t even know this had a name.
Sometimes, when DH sneezes really loud I have violent thoughts towards him for being so noisy. Same if he or DS bang their cutlery off their plates. It really pisses me off.
Fortunately, I recognise that this is my problem not theirs so I just cringe and say nothing.

Babymamamama · 02/08/2020 11:22

Yes OP I have all these reactions. But I do accept that I am sensitive to noise in a way many others aren't and that possibly I have misophonia. Therefore it is my problem rather than anyone else's. Bring truly honest I would love to live in silence. Apart noise of my choice e.g. Classical music but never ever football commentary or heaven forbid Talk Sport.

Hahahah I don’t think they do
Youbigdosser · 02/08/2020 12:37

You need to get a life. You must be bored if someone eating an apple is inconvenient for you

WellThisWentWell · 02/08/2020 13:02

Oh, i get you OP!

I have some news for you - we are all different. Sounds that some people can happily tolerate, perhaps not even notice, will cut through others like a knife. It's got sweet FA to do with boredom and 'getting a life'.

OP, I feel the same about certain sounds. Eating noises, children's squeals and polystyrene blocks are actually painful.

Enoughnowstop Don't take it to heart, we are all being judged by somebody for something.

Perro · 02/08/2020 15:17

I agree with everything you’ve written. I wish I didn’t. Only thing that helps is earplugs and relaxation techniques.
To the dismissive posters, misophonia isn’t a choice, it can be debilitating and destroy relationships.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/08/2020 15:20

Agree. Of course noisy people are not being unreasonable and those of us who find noise problematic are!

You know misophonia is a genuine condition, right? Hmm
blue25 · 02/08/2020 15:25

Same. People are just so unnecessarily loud. It’s getting harder and harder to find silence in the world we live in and it’s harmful for many people.

Winterwoollies · 02/08/2020 15:31

@Enoughnowstop oh come on don’t make this a personal thing against your son... that’s a bit of a stretch even for MN.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 02/08/2020 15:34

I know what you mean OP, it is often physically painful. 💐

recklessruby · 02/08/2020 15:38

I agree. Next door has a very screechy loud girlfriend that makes me want to kill her.
People on speakerphone the same.
We have an extension being built opposite us and the drilling has been 8 till 4 Monday to Saturday. I was feeling like crying by friday.
All i want to hear in my garden is birdsong.
I also want to kill the air horn person and the twatty parent who has given their children whistles.
Desert island sounds good to me.
Also hate souped up loud exhaust boy racer cars.

MoreListeningLessChatting · 02/08/2020 15:38

Oh.

I talk and laugh loud. I need to laugh and I don't really think about it the giggles just come out.

How do you cope on days out/meals out/theatre/cinema etc. Even just living with anyone?

Wolfgirrl · 02/08/2020 15:38

I like noisy people actually, they're generally more fun and laid back.

What annoys me is the 'meak' people that talk in irritatingly quiet voices, everything they say sounds strained & they act like a gust of wind would blow them away. They never laugh or let their guard down.

The only thing that really bugs me is revving engines at night when DD is sleeping, and people that play music off their phones on buses etc

vanillandhoney · 02/08/2020 15:42

As someone with sensory issues around noise, I just don't do those things. And I struggle badly when DH does things like tap on hard surfaces, whistle out of tune or hums. I mostly tune it out but it's hard.

Basically, it makes life a lot harder than it needs to be.
