At least there's one old white racist who won't be getting his job back.

Joe Arpaio loses bid for his old position as sheriff

thehill.com/homenews/campaign/511146-joe-arpaio-loses-bid-for-his-old-position-as-sheriff

Former Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpaio narrowly lost his campaign to get his old job back Friday, ending a nearly successful comeback for one of the state's most polarizing figures.

Arpaio, who held the position from 1993-2017, lost the GOP primary for the job to 40-year department veteran and Arpaio aide Jerry Sheridan by just over 6,000 votes when the Maricopa County Elections Department called the race. The two contenders were separated just 1 percent, 37-36.

The loss marked Arpaio's second defeat on his mission to return to politics. The former sheriff lost the GOP Senate primary in Arizona in 2018.

Arpaio was pardoned by President Trump in 2017 over his conviction of criminal contempt of court for refusing to obey a judge's order in a racial profiling case.

The former sheriff remains a fiercely polarizing figure in the state, drawing controversial headlines for creating chain gangs in prison and housing inmates in tents in the scorching heat. A vocal immigration hardliner, Arpaio is most well-known for profiling Hispanics.

He was involved in a number of scandals later on during his time as sheriff, including the botching of over 400 sex-crimes complaints made to his office and a judge finding his officers guilty of targeting Latinos in traffic stops.

And isn't he about nearly 90? How can anyone so old run for public office, I just don't get it.

@Roussette

Says it all.... he holds a press conf in the ballroom of his own golf club that bans people from congregating without masks, and dozens of his supporters are there without masks to cheer him on. How can a press conf be held like this?
It's just another demonstration of how he thinks laws and regulations don't apply to him, especially since he owns the premises. Mind you he also thinks it is OK to drive a golf cart over the greens at Bedminster (this would normally result in you being asked to leave the course)
TheNorthWestPawsage · 08/08/2020 09:27

He's 88 Rousette. I'm in no position to be ageist but WTF!

TheNorthWestPawsage · 08/08/2020 09:33

When Biden announces his VP pick Trump and the GOP will be circling like vultures.
This piece on Susan Rice shows where they're likely to land if it's her.

Progressives alarmed by Rice's vast financial investments. The multimillionaire VP finalist bought into the company that owns the Keystone XL pipeline project — and many other Democratic Party villains.

Roussette · 08/08/2020 09:34

88 ! Blimey. I just think that your brain isn't as sharp the older you get. I'm in my 60s and can say that.
I do this old person thing of marching into a room to pick something up and by the time I've got there I don't know what it is! And searching for a word or a name!
I'm by no means senile but age has an impact, and I relate that to Biden too. I desperately want him to win but he's obviously going to be a 1-term POTUS...

"President Trump’s efforts to influence the timing and makeup of this fall’s presidential debates, some of the last planned events with the power to shift the trajectory of the campaign, have been rejected, with both the independent debate commission and the Biden campaign showing no interest in altering course.*
*But that has not stopped Trump from trying to gain advantage by making the debates a top-tier issue, as he and his advisers circulate unfounded claims that Joe Biden may try to dodge the events and suggest that the Democrat may try to cheat by using notes if the sessions are held virtually."

An incomplete tunnel found stretching from Mexico to Arizonana^ appears to be “the most sophisticated tunnel in US history”, authorities said.*

I bet POTUS has built a better one 😉

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/08/2020 13:19

Gotta say, if that is the most sophisticated tunnel in US history, they really aren't much good at tunnels in the US! Even our old 1897 Blackwall Tunnel is more sophisticated than that one....

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/08/2020 13:26

And it seems to me that getting a non-American to moderate each debate might be a good idea. Some tough Aussie or NZ chat-show host might do.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/08/2020 13:26

You know, someone who would tell Trump to stay where he was put and not ponce about behind the other candidate making faces....

Roussette · 08/08/2020 13:54

I hated hated hated how he lurked behind HRC, it was really intimidating and I'm really surprised it was allowed.
He was pacing up and down behind her and getting really close at times, it was all done to put her off her stride.
I watched every debate (sad git I am) and she was so eloquent. I am not up enough on the facts, but I can recognise eloquency!

Swan should moderate it!

Interesting and important assessment of what needs to be done to stop Trump's thinly-disguised disruption of postal votes and him potentially trying to declare a mis-election.
Apparently the constitution says states actually have until Dec 23rd to confirm their vote tallies and Jan 6th for them to be received. Not November 3rd/4th!

Trump Has Launched a Three-Pronged Attack on the Election
And it starts with undermining the U.S. Postal Service.
www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/trump-has-launched-three-pronged-attack-election/615034/

... Trump may additionally think his hand is strengthened by another federal law that tells Congress to respect each state’s final resolution of ballot disputes if made by December 8. This date may well be too soon for all mail-in ballots to be counted when the pandemic is sure to increase the number of such ballots cast. But that provision is a mere “safe harbor”: It doesn’t require that states resolve ballot disputes by December 8. The only statutory deadline for a state to send its tally is December 23, and the only deadline for receiving a state’s tally—the true constitutional deadline—is January 6, when Congress meets in special session to certify the election results. So there’s no excuse for a state to call its election a failure or for Congress to disregard the results so long as they’re resolved ideally by December 23 but ultimately no later than January 6—not December 8....

Maybe send Paxman.

John Roberts’ Stealth Attack on Abortion Rights Just Paid Off
A federal appeals court will allow Arkansas to create degrading new hurdles for people seeking abortions.
slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/08/john-roberts-8th-circuit-abortion-rights-arkansas.html

The Supreme Court’s recent decision in June Medical v. Russo was hailed by many liberal court watchers as a win for reproductive rights, as the court declined to overturn Roe v. Wade and formally eliminate the right to an abortion. On Friday, however, a federal appeals court ruled that June Medical significantly narrowed the constitutional right to abortion access. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel swept away an injunction that had blocked Arkansas from enforcing a slew of abortion restrictions, including a requirement that patients pregnant as a result of rape notify their rapists before terminating their pregnancy. The appellate court’s decision confirms that Chief Justice John Roberts’ controlling opinion in June Medical will serve as a tool to eviscerate abortion rights. Those who briefly heralded him as a champion of reproductive freedom were too caught up in the halftime show to see the game.

Friday’s ruling in Hopkins v. Jegley greenlights four Arkansas regulations passed in 2017. The first of these laws requires clinics to report the names of abortion patients under 18 to local law enforcement. These clinics must then preserve the fetal tissue and treat it like criminal evidence. The second law forces abortion providers to spend “reasonable time and effort” acquiring a patient’s medical records for her “entire pregnancy history” before performing the abortion. The third law grants equal rights over fetal remains to both partners, with no exception in cases of rape. A patient must notify her partner before the abortion and ask which method of disposal he prefers. If both partners are minors, the patient’s parents get to decide how fetal remains are disposed of. If the patient is a minor but her partner is an adult, then he—not the patient—makes the choice. These rules effectively prohibit medication abortion, which occurs at home, where the provider cannot control the disposal of fetal remains. The fourth and final law bans the safest and most common procedure for second-trimester abortions.

"states should start the mail-in and early-voting processes well before November 3, and as soon as the candidates up and down the ballot are known"

Is it possible for Republican candidates to drag their feet about this, so that the ballots go out as late as possible?
