Oh my god. I've just found The Americans during lockdown - I'm totally hooked and now on Season 3 (no spoilers, pls!).

Matthew Ryhs plays a Russian spy during the Cold War, living undercover with wife & family in the US.

He's AMAZING - fantastic actor, totally American, super charismatic.

Then just yesterday I came across a Rob Brydon clip of them both chatting about their past time together, and he's got a full-on super strong Welsh accent.

MIND......BLOWN.

AIBU to have had no idea that Matthew Rhys was welsh? 😂😂😂

um...until two years ago, now you wouldn't have been unreasonable. but when he won an emmy and made a speech it was EVERYWHERE that people were surprised he was Welsh. I believe Welsh is his first language actually....

Yes you are! Sorry.

Alienin · 31/07/2020 20:08

Probably not, but when he first made it, he made a big thing of being welsh.

EinsteinaGogo · 31/07/2020 20:12

😂😂😂 just me then!

I can't believe he can play an American so well.

ARudeTerriblePerson · 31/07/2020 20:16

I suppose you know he's now Perry Mason? Also he was in a film we watched - The Post. Always as an American.

Yellownotblue · 31/07/2020 20:16

The Americans is one of the best tv shows ever. Enjoy!

Also - YABabitU.

EinsteinaGogo · 31/07/2020 20:28

I'm so in awe of actors who can convincingly, consistently pull off accents they have no natural experience of.

Bradley Freegard and Steffan Rhodri are welsh speakers too. They have been on things on S4C.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 31/07/2020 20:31

Watch killing eve and then watch an interview with Jodie Comer.

tattychicken · 31/07/2020 20:31

He was in Brothers and Sisters years ago. Great American accent. Very Welsh name and very proudly Welsh.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/07/2020 20:34

Well I don't know who you are talking about but Rhys is a very Welsh name so it's not really surprising.

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2020 20:34

Matthew isn't a particularly welsh name, and Rhys is his middle name.

Livingthecovidaloca · 31/07/2020 20:35

I did know that, and that he and Keri Russell have been together for years. But I’m also a huge The Americans fan, and always recommend it every chance I get!

Roomba · 31/07/2020 20:40

The Americans is amazing! Without giving any spoilers it is well worth watching right to the very end.

Matthew Rhys was also excellent in Death and Nightingales - which was on iplayer last year, I think? He played a drunken, violent, bitter, staunch Ulsterman brilliantly with (to my ear anyway) a flawless Ulster accent. He is very talented indeed.

Chuly · 31/07/2020 20:51

I did know about him, but years ago I was shocked to find that Christian Bale was born in Wales.

Mind you, I'm constantly surprised that Pontefract and the Cairngorms aren't welsh.

StoneColdBitch · 31/07/2020 20:55

I've recently finished watching The Americans! One of my favourite TV series ever. It gets better as it progresses, IMO. You are lucky still to have so much of it left to enjoy!

EinsteinaGogo · 01/08/2020 08:49

Thanks @StoneColdBitch - I'm glad to have so much left to watch too!

I loved him in Brothers & Sisters and was amazed to find out he was welsh. I think he’s fab, haven’t watched the Americans yet but it’s on my list :)

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 01/08/2020 09:29

His surname is a bit of a giveaway isn’t it?!

PrincessConsuelaBananahamm0ck · 01/08/2020 09:41

I was a big Brothers and Sisters fan (still miss it and not available to stream for free anywhere Sad) and was also surprised at the time that he wasn't American.

Piglet89 · 01/08/2020 11:59

Haha the surname?! The short, dark and swarthy?

Of course I knew he was Welsh!

Piglet89 · 01/08/2020 12:00

He’s gonna play Perry Mason soon I think.

I have a theory that Welsh people are good at accents and mimicry because many of them seem to have a musical ear. Think Michael Sheen.

wowfudge · 01/08/2020 12:04

Ah - the 1980s disguises in the Americans were one of the best things. Always knew he was Welsh though.

UncleShady · 01/08/2020 12:12

Have you seen the carpool thing with him and Michael Sheen where they are trying to out-Welsh each other? itunes.apple.com/us/episode/michael-sheen-matthew-rhys/1454620330
