Oh my god. I've just found The Americans during lockdown - I'm totally hooked and now on Season 3 (no spoilers, pls!).

Matthew Ryhs plays a Russian spy during the Cold War, living undercover with wife & family in the US.

He's AMAZING - fantastic actor, totally American, super charismatic.

Then just yesterday I came across a Rob Brydon clip of them both chatting about their past time together, and he's got a full-on super strong Welsh accent.

MIND......BLOWN.

AIBU to have had no idea that Matthew Rhys was welsh? 😂😂😂

His real surname is Evans, which is Welsh.

runninguphills · 01/08/2020 12:24

Did you know that Taron Egerton is also Welsh (Played lead in Kingsman, Eddie the Eagle and Rocket man). He's from West Wales and also a Welsh speaker. He is an amazing actor.

MikeUniformMike · 01/08/2020 12:45

Taron Egerton was born in England with only one Welsh grandparent.

runninguphills · 01/08/2020 12:53

He was brought up in Anglesey and Aberystwyth. I think he received his education through the medium of Welsh. He has stated in interviews that he is a Welsh.

MikeUniformMike · 01/08/2020 13:12

If he speaks Welsh, he is welsh.
You can't be 'a Welsh'.

Stripesgalore · 01/08/2020 13:52

I have always known he was Welsh. Watch him in Very Annie Mary which is set in Wales.

I agree. It was meant to read "a Welsh man" but I got autocorrected.

It was very important of you to point this out Hmm

killerofmen · 01/08/2020 20:38

And Ioan Gruffydd!

MikeUniformMike · 01/08/2020 21:19

I do my best, @runninguphills. Sorry.

Don't get me started on Saes - I'd be running up hills in a rage.

killerofmen · 01/08/2020 21:24

Tom Jones, there's another one. There's quite a few Welsh about.

CoRhona · 01/08/2020 21:32

I did know that, but didn't realise the actress who plays Tench's wife on Mindhunter was born in Southport, Merseyside. The American accents by some of our British actors are fantastic.

should probably give a nod here to Mindhunter's Jonathan Groff who is American for his British accent in Hamilton...

JustCallMeGriffin · 01/08/2020 21:38

I knew he was Welsh...but my husband was in school with him and his niece goes to school with my daughter so I'd look like a right plank if I didn't!

Luke Evan's is Welsh too. He's friends with one of my managers. Plus we have Michael Sheen, a portion of Taran Egerton (very Welsh upbringing but born in Chester) and Ioan Gruffydd. Christian Bale doesn't really acknowledge his Welsh roots so I don't count him.

DotForShort · 01/08/2020 21:59

I did know that. The Americans is one of the most brilliant shows of recent years. Matthew Rhys’ American accent is pretty good, though not perfect. I can definitely detect hints of his real accent at times. But of course, his character is meant to be a foreigner passing as an American, so a slightly inauthentic accent is extremely appropriate!

(Don’t get me started on Keri Russell’s atrocious pronunciation the few times she speaks Russian.)

Toilenstripes · 01/08/2020 22:02

I love Matthew Rhys! Proud Welsh rugby supporter.

Clumsyvolcano · 01/08/2020 22:07

Well, he’s got a Welsh surname so I am quite shocked that you are so shocked that he is Welsh, given the fact that his surname indicates Welsh heritage. Although it doesn’t necessarily mean he himself is Welsh, but the point I’m making is you can’t be that astounded, surely?

Chuly · 01/08/2020 22:09

I love Groff, but I think his inspiration for his British accent came from Tyrion Lannister (GOT) Grin .

Suewiththeredford · 01/08/2020 22:14

YABU. He’s Uber Welsh. As is the fella who got eaten by his dogs in GOT. And the one who played Richard III in the White Queen. And David Emmanuel. Welsh speaker too.

waltzingparrot · 01/08/2020 22:19

I remember a critic saying Rupert Friend's American accent in Homeland was really good and loads of Americans piled on to say how astounded they were to read he was English. None of them could find a single fault with his American accent.

Patch23042 · 01/08/2020 22:29

The Americans is outstanding. The final episode is mindblowing.

There’s a poster on the wall of his character’s travel agency promoting Patagonia. That was an in-joke because he’d recently been in a successful film of that name (there’s a Welsh speaking population in Patagonia of course).

Deadringer · 01/08/2020 22:50

I knew he was welsh, he played Dylan Thomas in a film a few years back. I first saw him in a movie called The Scapegoat and have loved him ever since.
