Singles Event in Park

This flyer has gone up in my local park to promote a "Singles Social" taking place this Saturday. AIBU to think that this is misogynistic, ageist, heteronormative and creepy AF?

Oh gosh I’m cringing reading that. A “manly approach” and a very specific age range. YANBU, it’s wrong on so many levels.

Sparklesocks · 30/07/2020 01:00

28-38 is so oddly specific?? Has it maybe been organised by one bloke trying to meet someone?? Grin

honeygirlz · 30/07/2020 01:27

Yes very sexist, but selfishly I would rather be sitting and be approached rather than be the one approaching so I’d let it go.

It’s also not very clear? Usually with speed dating it’s quite ordered as you move from table to table. This seems to be a free for all where the man can just randomly approach any lady in a manly way.

WentworthPrison · 30/07/2020 01:34

It sounds like it's maybe been arranged by someone with English as a second language. The 'manly approach' is odd terminology.

GameChange123 · 30/07/2020 01:47

Get a chair and some popcorn!

OrigamiOwl · 30/07/2020 01:52

An oddly specific age range there!

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/07/2020 01:56

I would be going there just to watch! A great afternoon of entertainment playing the whole matches who game!
But yes. An interesting choice of words - strikes me as an older person - maybe someone fancies a much younger woman!

Everyonetakeiteasy · 30/07/2020 02:28

Apostrophes in the wrong places, same with inverted commas, then lack of apostrophes too... "your self". It's a mess 😅. The ladies need to brace themselves for a...manly approach whatever that is :))))))

Everyonetakeiteasy · 30/07/2020 02:30

What if you've just turned 39?!😩😂

Furries · 30/07/2020 02:45

@GreenTease - I’ll be honest, I read your post and thought “oh no, here we go again, someone else on the perpetually offended list”. I mean, what’s wrong with some single meeting up in a park? Lockdown could have been pretty crap for some single people.

Then I clicked on the image - and I therefore apologise for my first thought!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/07/2020 03:10

Tempting to go along to find out what a "manly approach" is but sadly I don't fit the (very specific) age category.

frustrationcentral · 30/07/2020 08:33

I'm wondering if they do others for diff age groups, so the one before is 18-28? If not that is a weird age bracket!

allfalldown47 · 30/07/2020 08:37

28-38 - what a bizarre age category Confused

EnjoyingTheSilence · 30/07/2020 08:42

I’m tempted to go and see what a manly approach is!

TheLastDynasty · 30/07/2020 08:44

YANBU, that is grim

YinuCeatleAyru · 30/07/2020 08:52

the weird age bracket will be because the organiser is 37 and this is the age range he wants to creep over meet.

the plan is really off putting and waving red flags. the women have no safety net if a creep decides to latch on to them. no systematic method to ensure that everyone gets a fair number of contacts. the menfolk will be jostling for position to be next in line for the prettiest ladies and will avoid some. it would be a really unpleasant meat-market. women expected to be passive recipients of male attention with no agency of their own. yuck.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 30/07/2020 08:53

Can you imagine if you’ve just gone to the park for a bit of sun/read a book/peace and quiet and you kept having random men coming up to you for a chat not knowing what was going on.
I’m feeling awkward just reading it.

Pogmella · 30/07/2020 08:54

Amaaazing I’d be getting a squad together and some wine to await these ‘manly approaches’. I’m imagining he’ll lunge on up and flex a bit before throwing some compliments our way...

redcarbluecar · 30/07/2020 08:56

Sounds amazing. 😀 What a shame to fall JUST outside the age bracket.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 30/07/2020 10:21

Ok, so for those who are on the slow side this morning, what’s wrong with it? 😳
I see an invite for a certain age group, a location and some house rules (minus the typos, but I lived in this country long enough)

Chanjer · 30/07/2020 10:52

hmm that's not far away...

May post a trip report

ShebaShimmyShake · 30/07/2020 10:58

That's just outdoors, socially distanced speed dating with the women sitting still and the men shifting along, right? I think it's just a slightly awkward joke rather than actually sexist.

Definitely don't think it's heteronormative or ageist. It's a speed dating event for straight people (or people looking to meet the opposite sex) in that age group. Saves wasting people's time, gay or straight. Surely there are similar events arranged for gay people?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 30/07/2020 10:59

It's just a variation on speed-dating innit? One half stay static, the other half move round one.

The 'manly approach' was probably meant tongue in cheek and thought to be highly amusing.

TheChampagneGalop · 30/07/2020 11:00

Manly approach is when they walk up to you slowly in their underwear while flexing their biceps and abs and you just sit there and evaluate like a real female bird.
