To think my portion was too large (photo)?

I’m living a bit ‘on the road’ at the moment (essential) and relying on eating out - trying to be as healthy as I can as I’m trying (!) to lose weight.

I have attached a photo of tonight’s evening meal, my only meal of the day plus a few snacks. My photo isn’t the best unfortunately but it was a bowl of spicy rice and a bowl of bean stew/soup (I’m vegetarian).

Aibu to think I had too much? Would you have eaten all of it? Unfortunately through years of dieting and binge eating I have lost sight of what a normal portion of food is and how ‘normal’ people eat.

Ps i appreciate it doesn’t look very nice but it was actually quite tasty!

It’s a big portion for me, but I eat a lot, just in smaller portions. If I just ate three meals per day, I reckon that would be fine.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 30/07/2020 20:00

Looks to me like OP was in a Turkish restaurant. Rice tends to be served separately (I think that’s bulgur) because usually you eat the beans with bread, bit rice is always available. I agree with others that it’s likely cereal bowl plus side plate.

JRUIN · 30/07/2020 20:26

I stand by my conviction. Maybe that's why I'm a size 6/8?

Why are you boasting about being underweight though?

OP considering that's your only meal of the day, and the bean stew won't be very calorific at all I don't think the portion size is too big at all.

PurpleDaisies · 30/07/2020 20:33

Size 6/8 isn’t necessarily underweight. Hmm

xxyzz · 30/07/2020 20:35

I've never been overweight or had weight issues and that portion looks too big for one normal meal (the rice - the stew is fine as it's just beans).

That said, if this is your only meal of the day, you might be that hungry. In which case, don't worry, eat and enjoy it, unless you feel too full and like you're going to burst, in which case, stop!

It's not rocket science. Yes, generally your meal should fit on one plate/in one bowl, even if up to the top of the bowl, but if you're eating two meals in one, I guess you can eat twice as much, if you actually have room and don't start to feel too full part way through.

And, no, ignore the people telling you to weigh your food. Don't do that. Just eat it and enjoy it!

It was a definite boast. Smug as a smug thing.
PurpleDaisies · 30/07/2020 20:37

I agree about the boast thing. I’m taking issue with assuming 6/8 means underweight.

itsaratrap · 30/07/2020 20:38

If they’re cereal bowls, not problem at all. Even better if it was whole grain rice.

No wonder we've got so many kids with eating disorders these days, if this thread is indicative of mothers!!!

That's like saying 16/18 isn't necessarily overweight ie not true.

You’re talking nonsense there JRUIN. I’m a size 8 (6 in some shops). My BMI is 20.5 and I could lose a stone without being in the underweight category. There are plenty of people in the same position as me. 6/8 can easily be in the healthy weight category.

IhateBoswell · 30/07/2020 20:59

I can believe a size 8 is in the correct BMI, I’m struggling with a size 6 though, that’s teeny.

Sorry, no doubt I’m being dense, but what do you mean?

Thisismytimetoshine · 30/07/2020 21:02

Are you very short?

Thisismytimetoshine · 30/07/2020 21:03

Sorry, @PurpleDaisies

bemusedmoose · 30/07/2020 21:11

I'm veggie and no way could I eat all that! (i too have had trouble with over eating especially pasta dishes) The bean and veg soup yes but the rice way too much, I would have stopped at the soup and grabbed a healthy pud. Excess carbohydrates are stored in the body as fat and that plate of rice is way over a good amount of carbs, also not much nutritional value.

Having said that if you are doing a physical job and your snacks were healthy you might burn it off. If you are doing desk based work then nope.

PurpleDaisies · 30/07/2020 21:13

No, I’m 5ft7.

I'm sorry but I find it very hard to believe that if you lost a stone, (therefore a dress size) you would still not be considered underweight.

PurpleDaisies · 30/07/2020 21:17

Look at the image I just posted. That’s from the NHS bmi calculator. I weigh about 60kg now. I could lose 6.5kg and still be (just) in the healthy weight category. That’s just over a stone.

Thisismytimetoshine · 30/07/2020 21:22

5'7" and 9 stone, and you take a size six? I can only assume that's vanity sizing with a vengeance... Or you're a very peculiar shape.
You don't have a giant head, by any chance? Grin

I am very confused then because when I weighed 60 kg I was a size 12 or a 10 at a push/pull/lie down and heave the zip up whilst breathing in until I turned blue!

PurpleDaisies · 30/07/2020 21:28

I said I was an 8 and a 6 in some shops. I was making point that if Iost a stone I would still be in the healthy range. That would definitely make me a six.

JRUIN · 30/07/2020 21:29

And I had a flat toned belly at the time.

Well, you being confused has no bearing on my dress size.

JRUIN · 30/07/2020 21:37

I think you probably wear clothes that are too tight, which is fine but I don't like to feel constricted.
