To think my portion was too large (photo)?

I’m living a bit ‘on the road’ at the moment (essential) and relying on eating out - trying to be as healthy as I can as I’m trying (!) to lose weight.

I have attached a photo of tonight’s evening meal, my only meal of the day plus a few snacks. My photo isn’t the best unfortunately but it was a bowl of spicy rice and a bowl of bean stew/soup (I’m vegetarian).

Aibu to think I had too much? Would you have eaten all of it? Unfortunately through years of dieting and binge eating I have lost sight of what a normal portion of food is and how ‘normal’ people eat.

Ps i appreciate it doesn’t look very nice but it was actually quite tasty!

@ yeOldeTrout
Hor’derbs! that typo has really made me chuckle 😃

Bluntness100 · 29/07/2020 19:58

They're cereal bowl sized

In comparison to the cutlery they look like very large cereal bowls indeed.

Waiting2020 · 29/07/2020 19:58

I wonder if people who are saying it's too much food have noticed the OP only eats one meal a day. If you counted the calories for that meal it might not be someone's full RDA.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/07/2020 19:58

There is a fork in a back which gives an idea of the size? Unless it's a dessert fork..

It's big. And I am obeseBlush

FatherBrownsBicycle · 29/07/2020 19:59

Stew slightly large but if very tasty I could probably stuff it in. I would struggle with the rice, I usually find 2 dessert spoons is plenty because I’m not a huge fan.

Elieza · 29/07/2020 19:59

Why are you only eating once a day ‘and snacks’?

Is that some kind of weight loss plan? I’m not up to speed with such things and heard that keeping your blood sugar level by eating small regular healthy meals is better for your system. No snacks.

But perhaps that’s old school and recommended nowadays?

Cherylina · 29/07/2020 19:59

The cutlery gives scale so I don’t see why people say there’s no context!

That rice would feed three.

I stand by my conviction. Maybe that's why I'm a size 6/8?

Fr0thandBubble · 29/07/2020 20:00

That looks huge! No wonder people struggle with their weight these days.

pepperycinnamon · 29/07/2020 20:00

Without seeing the plate size it's hard to say but I'd have probably had half the amount of rice.

Batshittery · 29/07/2020 20:01

Please bear in mind OP there is a competition on MN as to who eats the least. Anything more than a lettuce leaf is too much Grin

The curry dish looks quite thin (watery) so I don't imagine it's all that substantial?

EndlessUserName · 29/07/2020 20:02

Way too much rice. I'd say the rice alone would feed 3 people. I personally wouldn't eat rice with a stew either. On the other hand I also wouldn't skip meals

lockdownsunflowers · 29/07/2020 20:03

Using the hand portion system they normally say a fist is usually the right amount of carbs for one meal
You can look it up on bhf or whisper daily mail even has a pic I can't bear to link it

Coulddowithanap · 29/07/2020 20:03

Looks like a shallow bowl for the stew. I'd say portions look OK to me. (I'm not fat by the way and would eat that amount of food for a main meal)

Lettuce leaf? That's plain greedy and expensive.

Half a leaf of homegrown cabbage. Anything over and bought is just wrong.

Batshittery · 29/07/2020 20:03

On second look - there's a lot of beans in there!

MyPersona · 29/07/2020 20:03

Is that rice? It looks like barley.

Lookyloo · 29/07/2020 20:03

I'd have eaten about an eight of the rice alone with the bowl of stew. I usually only eat a spoonful or two of rice - honestly. Ex DP would have eaten the rest lol. And so between them both you see, they licked the platter clean!

Janaih · 29/07/2020 20:03

I would have half of that but with a massive blob of mayo on.

lyralalala · 29/07/2020 20:04

As one meal a day it looks fine portion wise, but one meal a day isn't a healthy way to eat.

lunar1 · 29/07/2020 20:04

I think it was probably fine, the rice is on a side plate isn't it?

Don't take some of the replies too seriously, there are people on here who would be completely stuffed on two of the beans and three grains of rice.

Batshittery · 29/07/2020 20:05

My apologies Schrodinger I did mean a home grown lettuce of course Grin

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 29/07/2020 20:06

You've come to the wrong place for an objective view OP, competitive under eating is very much a thing on MN. Ultimately if you are a healthy weight and maintaining that your portion size is probably fine for you. Also you've eaten a bowl of veg in stock and some rice, it's hardly a big Mac or a meat feast pizza. If you are vegetarian and eat mainly whole foods loss of vegetables etc, rather than fake meat type products and your own body weight in cheese, it's probably fairly hard to over do it.

foobio · 29/07/2020 20:06

Looks like wheat or barley, not rice, so lower GI and higher protein.

For the only meal of the day, the portion looks sensible. If it's the third meal of the day I'd have slightly less, maybe 3/4 of it.
