AIBU to be annoyed about my new shower?

Hi, I just got a brand new shower plumbed in and the handle is cracked - just a cosmetic ceramic piece but annoying all the same. The plumber said it was like that when they opened the box. I did look at it when it was delivered and I’m sure I’d have noticed that, but it is possible that I just didn’t notice it. If it was cracked when they went to install it I’d have expected them to say something so I could have returned it. As it stands they didn’t say anything, went ahead and installed it, and now I can’t return it. It’s not the end of the world of course, but it does bother me. The shower was over £300. Am I being unreasonable? What would you do? Is it possible to get that little ceramic bit replaced? I think it’s just going to bother me every time I see it now.

I think Mira have quite good customer service, so definitely worth contacting them to ask if you can get a replacement!

UnicornAndSparkles · 27/07/2020 20:28

You can get a replacement for the ceramic bit; we had one for our kitchen sink tap.

I'd be annoyed too. There is no way they should have installed it with that broken! Perhaps they broken it accidently and didn't want to say

glasshalfsomething · 27/07/2020 20:30

Id be more annoyed by the state of that tiling! Why on earth does it look like that?

Newlittle · 27/07/2020 20:30

Yes contact whoever you bought the shower from and ask them to send you that piece. They'd just take it from a new box and write off that box, which is equivalent to you having noticed and taken it back pre install. Or if they don't suggest doing that, then suggest it yourself.

Kittybythelighthouse · 27/07/2020 20:31

That’s what I thought, Unicorn! I think he hoped I wouldn’t notice. I don’t mind if we can get a replacement piece from Mira. As long as we don’t have to either live with it or install a whole new shower I don’t mind.

Your fitters clearly broke it but don't want to admit it, I'm sure you'll be able to replace that bit though.

Itisbetter · 27/07/2020 20:33

The tiling isn’t great but just phone and ask for a replacement ceramic bit.

SusieOwl4 · 27/07/2020 20:33

That grouting is a bit messy ?

Kittybythelighthouse · 27/07/2020 20:34

glasshalfsomething, I agree but that’s another story for another day. We are already working on that.

Omg, that plastering mess is horrendous, they need to come back and sort it out, I'd be furious with that finish, the cracked handle is minor by comparison. You should be able to get that replaced no problem.

WanderingMilly · 27/07/2020 20:41

Since the plastering mess is so bad, I would be more inclined to think the plumbers incompetent and therefore just as likely to have cracked the shower piece themselves.....

Hoppinggreen · 27/07/2020 20:42

That grouting is awful, and I bet the plumber broke that bit too

Kittybythelighthouse · 27/07/2020 20:43

Thanks all. I’m already working on the finish, don’t worry.

You can definitely get a replacement lever (£31.56)...

No professional should have installed it in that condition though and what on earth is going on with that grouting behind? It should have at least been smoothed properly but better still, a full tile with some fancy cuts for the pipework.

Undies1990 · 27/07/2020 20:49

Sorry but your 'plumber' was very unprofessional. They should not have installed the shower with a broken piece! It clearly visible and is just awful - I'd be so disappointed and insist they replace it at no extra cost.

As for the tiling finish....

Kittybythelighthouse · 27/07/2020 20:52

Thank you HisNibs. I will ask him to replace that part. Just another element to an ongoing saga...

We've got something similar and the ceramic bit screws on (it's come out occasionally) so may be easy to replace. Otherwise they might just send you another one. My brother bought a bathroom mirror for £700 recently and it had a tiny chip on the corner - they just sent another one.

Gobbycop · 27/07/2020 20:54

Just going on the tiling I'd hazard a guess they broke it.

Zero pride and careless.

Musmerian · 27/07/2020 21:04

I agree with @glasshalfsomething - that’s shocking tiling. Why are there huge bits of grout! They haven’t attached it properly at all. I’ve got a very similar one and the shower contro is flush to the tiles and has no grout around it at all. Really poor workmanship.

Coldspringharbour · 27/07/2020 21:04

Blimey that tiling is shocking. I’d be asking for a refund if I were you.

Kittybythelighthouse · 27/07/2020 21:07

Musmerian can you send me a photo of yours to compare? I am currently having this argument with them. It would help me to illustrate what it is meant to look like (I’m sure they know it isn’t right though!).

Just out of interest, what should I be expecting here? The job to be fixed right? Or money off the total works? There was quite a lot of work besides this - the whole downstairs was gutted and redone pretty much.

OP posts:
glasshalfsomething · 27/07/2020 21:16

Absolutely have them fix it. You’ll get the rage every time you shower otherwise

CoRhona · 27/07/2020 21:16

We just bought a replacement Mira shower and the on / off button was really stiff - their customer service was excellent and they sent out a new front for the shower very quickly, no charge.

I would highly recommend Mira for that alone Wink

I definitely think they would send you a new handle.

Kittybythelighthouse · 27/07/2020 21:18

Yes it would annoy me every time I see it.
