AIBU to wonder how people with glasses are managing with masks?

Just to be clear from the start I absolutely have face masks and I have been wearing them on the handful of occasions I have been to the shop. I do understand that wearing one is more important than my discomfort.

However. Going around the shop today I literally had to wipe my glasses every time I breathed, I think it was worse today because of the colder wet weather. I cannot see without my glasses. I basically went around the shop intermittently hold my breath for as long as possible to minimise the number of times I was touching my face to remove and wipe my glasses because we aren’t supposed to touch our faces but when I didn’t wipe them I actually walked straight into another persons trolley.

Now quite obviously it MUST be possible to avoid this issue because how else would doctors and nurses manage? So it must be possible but I even brought some spray which apparently is anti fog but it did nothing.

Has anyone else found a solution to this? AIBU to wonder how the medical profession do it and ask them to share their wisdom?

My masks don't have a bendy strip but my glasses don't steam up so long as I pull the mask up high enough on my nose that the glasses can sit on top of it. However I'm getting new glasses soon that are a less "deep" shape and I'm not sure whether this will still work then.

wagtailred · 28/07/2020 12:13

I tried a different style of mask today and had far less issues. It had hand ties around the head rather than elastic loops round the ears

TrickyD · 28/07/2020 12:22

So much nonsense on here.
The masked and bespectacled surgeon who did my heart procedure seemed to manage.

ToffeePennie · 28/07/2020 12:24

I can’t cope with the metal strip ones as they make my nose pieces squeeze my nose too tightly. Instead I have a lovely polycotton one, sit it just under the edge of my glasses and never fogs up.

Yorkshiremummyof1 · 28/07/2020 13:53

My mum sewed a strip of flanne to where it rests on her nose and that’s stopped it

Sennetti · 28/07/2020 15:06

@TrickyD yes and i bet he had better quality ppe, would not be moving from warm, cold, warm environments as well as not being required to make many movements, bending to the floor and stretching right across shelving......he would be stood in one spot!!

what a stupid, pointless 'comparison'!

Asdf12345 · 28/07/2020 15:11

When I use one at work I find nose out and the top string tight prevents problems.

If doing something really messy I will either go nose in with tape across the bridge of the nose or ask for a face shield.

What a "nonsense" post.

Surgeons wear good quality PPE, not £5 cloth masks off eBay.
They are also in a controlled environment and not going from indoors to outdoors and back again, or from wet to dry, or wearing their masks in the wind and rain.
They've also worn them for years and are used to them, know the techniques etc.

It's not a valid comparison, and trying to make it one just makes you look foolish.

PablosHoney · 28/07/2020 15:25

My MIL suggested rubbing a cut potato on the glass 😂

FloydWasACat · 28/07/2020 15:50

I tried sticking fabric plasters to the top of my mask today, it worked! Don't know how many strips of plasters I am going to get through though (note to self: add plasters to shopping list!)

FloydWasACat · 28/07/2020 15:51

inside the mask, sticky side on the fabric

Nacreous · 28/07/2020 16:10

Homemade mask wise: I originally had ones that were pleated like medical masks, but even with a nose wire my glasses were fogging up. In the end I have concluded one with a curved seam down the front of the mask is most effective: I made a single layer mock up and fitted it based on that, then made a template that I can use for more masks.

TrickyD · 28/07/2020 16:40

Vanillandhoney, maybe the whingers who don’t want to wear any masks should learn from the medical staff, and from you, and get ‘used to them and the techniques involved.‘

Again, they wear them indoors and don't have to go out in the wind and rain in their masks. It makes a huge difference. Mine is fine if I put it on indoors at home and wear it around the house, but outside it's a completely different story.

When your glasses are wet because you've had to stand in a rainy queue before being allowed in the shop, your glasses will steam up when you go inside - even without a mask on. Normally I would go into a shop, take off my glasses, clean them and put them back on - normally 2/3 times before being able to actually see properly.

Now, even if I do that, I can't see a thing and it's not safe to wander about half blind. It doesn't really bother me as I don't go into shops except to pay for fuel but it must be very hard for those who have no other choice.

Bubblesgun · 28/07/2020 22:28

I have glasses and they never fog while inwrar my mask.

You need to put the mask very high up on your nose, very near the eyes. Then the glasses on top.

No fogging.

Alez · 28/07/2020 22:29

I don't get any fogging as long as I use a mask with the metal wire.

Shelby30 · 28/07/2020 22:33

I have to wear my lenses if I need to wear a mask for longer than few minutes, it's just a nightmare they constantly steam up. The few times I've worn my glasses I've actually taken them off briefly or lifted them up if I'm stationary as I'm pretty blind. It's only been to pop in to local shop for bread and to chemist so straight in and out few minutes.

Binterested · 28/07/2020 23:17

I find I need to breathe through my mouth in a mask and I agree with a pp - that may worsen things. Is everyone mouth breathing ?

I do exactly that. Mask high on nose, glasses on top of it. All well fitting against my face.

They steam up. Every. Single. Time.

Serialcatmum · 28/07/2020 23:43

I bought some wire strips from amazon and stick them over my cute) masks. Game changer 🤓🤓🤓

LookAtThatCritter · 28/07/2020 23:47

A little medical tape over the top of your mask on the nose. Clears up the fogging instantly

BackforGood · 29/07/2020 00:15

What a ridiculous post / posts from TrickyD

Clearly a lot of people are starting to wear masks for the first time (unlike surgeons who you'd like to hope
a)have higher quality surgical masks than most of the general public
b) presumably have picked up tips from colleagues over the years), and have asked for advice to get around what is a very real problem.

If you don't have advice to help, then why post ? It's clearly not a relevant comparison.

Popjam · 29/07/2020 00:20

I wasn't managing. I got a visor instead, less protection but much more wearable than mask + glasses. I also keep the 1m+ distance.

Iseethesilverlining · 29/07/2020 00:25

We bought some from KateRosamondLondon on Etsy, which are made especially to work with glasses. We’ve all been very pleased with them.

parrotonmyshoulder · 29/07/2020 02:32

My 11 year old is managing perfectly well with home made masks - a curved seam up the front and shaped at the top. The disposable ones with thin wire are fine for her too. No fuss at all.
