AIBU to wonder how people with glasses are managing with masks?

Just to be clear from the start I absolutely have face masks and I have been wearing them on the handful of occasions I have been to the shop. I do understand that wearing one is more important than my discomfort.

However. Going around the shop today I literally had to wipe my glasses every time I breathed, I think it was worse today because of the colder wet weather. I cannot see without my glasses. I basically went around the shop intermittently hold my breath for as long as possible to minimise the number of times I was touching my face to remove and wipe my glasses because we aren’t supposed to touch our faces but when I didn’t wipe them I actually walked straight into another persons trolley.

Now quite obviously it MUST be possible to avoid this issue because how else would doctors and nurses manage? So it must be possible but I even brought some spray which apparently is anti fog but it did nothing.

Has anyone else found a solution to this? AIBU to wonder how the medical profession do it and ask them to share their wisdom?

Wire in the mask ones, or use surgical tape to keep it down.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 27/07/2020 18:33

As pps said, you need the metal bit around the nose. I combine it with anti fog spray. Both cheaply from amazon.

mogtheexcellent · 27/07/2020 18:36

I also wear varifocals and the mask lifts the level of the glasses so it's all blurry as well as steamy.

Joy.

Sadly for the environment I find the disposable masks are better. Will try wash up liquid.

iwishiwasonhol · 27/07/2020 18:36

I tried the washing up liquid today and it did seem to work ,was a bit worried that I would start to foam up in the rain

Sennetti · 27/07/2020 18:37

putting products on your glasses lens can destroy their coating!

and none of that works when in store putting stock out, up and down etc.....the glasses just fall off!!

its actually becoming a health and safety issue so i'm going to stop wearing a mask at work

I don’t find this. The fabric mask I have isn’t thick enough to make any difference - maybe shop around?
BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/07/2020 18:42

I'm not managing. I'm just fogging. I have ASD so I am really struggling with wearing a mask anyway. I don't want to put all sorts of cack on my lenses either; too expensive if it damages them.

Stealthfart · 27/07/2020 18:43

Nurse here. It is a pain in the arse. I can’t work out if the persistent headaches are from breathing in my own hot breath all day or because I try to work without my reading glasses on. Strategic placement of glasses over the wire lasts just until I need to use the phone and the other person can’t hear me, quite an important part of my job. When this hell is over I’ll be having a ceremonial burning of the masks.

user1471500037 · 27/07/2020 18:45

I just don't wear the mask!

Raimona · 27/07/2020 18:47

I take my glasses off and wander around partially blind. At least I can see better than if my glasses were steamed up! Please don’t put any alcohol based product on your glasses, it will crack the acrylic frame. Ditto washing up liquid which can strip the colour out.

Sennetti · 27/07/2020 18:49

i've also tried to work wearing one, i'm not wearing it anymore

workplaces need to get some proper fit for purpose designs, its unsafe

Blutopia · 27/07/2020 18:53

Ugh tell me about it, I have a fabric mask with a nose wire and my glasses still fog with every. Single. Breath. I tried putting them on my head in Asda but spent 10 minutes myopically searching for burgers amongst the fillet steak.

Dollywilde · 27/07/2020 18:54

I was struggling today, if I put my glasses on the top to minimise fogging they slip down, if I put the mask slightly lower then air gets in the lenses and mists them up. Add that to the fact that I’m 37 weeks pregnant and suffering from horrid nausea (worried about vomiting into my mask!) its not great. Think I’m going to have to stop going to the supermarket until baby is here - it’s just too difficult with a mask.

Jaxhog · 27/07/2020 18:56

Depends on the glasses.

MulticolourMophead · 27/07/2020 18:56

@Jammysod

Do you have a mask with a wire over the nose? I find if I wear one that does, then tuck the top of the mask under my glasses they don't steam up as much.
I made masks with wire in the nose area. It works reasonably well, but isn't perfect. I make sure to fit the mask underneath the glasses.
NecklessMumster · 27/07/2020 18:59

I've got the metal strip ones and wear glasses over the top but still fogs up and pushes my varifocals up slightly so I can't see properly anyway. Plus side is Im not browsing crap as shopping now not pleasurable. Years ago I did some training exercise on how life was difficult for older people - we had to go out with reduced visibility goggles and ear plugs....it feels like that.

rosie1959 · 27/07/2020 19:00

I take my glasses off short sighted so can see ok
Avoid shops as much as possible all shopping done on line and use local market where no mask needed

Aragog · 27/07/2020 19:00

We are wearing them with sunglasses at present. You need wire above the nose bit and you can then shape it down over your nose and glasses go over the top of the mask edge.

RozHuntleysStump · 27/07/2020 19:02

I don’t get any steaming at all.

Sennetti · 27/07/2020 19:02

its no good doing that when working an 8 hour shift

answering the phone is impossible with a mask as well so its glasses off, mask off to answer, then reverse to put back on

Sennetti · 27/07/2020 19:03

and washing of hands/sanitising isn't happening as much as soon as off the phone someone needs something IMMEDIATELY and cant just rush away to wash hands

Fossie · 27/07/2020 19:05

I’m just not intending to shop! I’m not even going to try to get used to it. Having said that, the fabric masks are the worse ones. I have some from Blackspade which seem the best ones I’ve tried. They have wire in the top but also not fabric so let less steam get on my glasses.

vanillandhoney · 27/07/2020 19:07

I have ASD so technically I'm exempt, but people have been getting abuse here for not wearing masks so I wore a face covering today to go to the Post Office.

It was chucking it with rain outside, then my glasses steamed up - I could barely see a thing and got all panicky. It was awful and I had to rush out of the shop after about sixty seconds - luckily my transaction was simple and was done before then!

I'll just be avoiding shops completely.

ShyOwl · 27/07/2020 19:07

If you have glasses that have nose pads they can be adjusted to sit further away from the face. The larger acetate frames sitting really close will be the worst offenders for steaming up

amusedbush · 27/07/2020 19:09

MN is now advertising this baffling contraption on the thread Grin

I wear a fabric mask and I pull it up quite high and then sit my glasses on top of it. They still steam up a tiny bit but I can cope with it.

AIBU to wonder how people with glasses are managing with masks?
