AIBU to wonder how people with glasses are managing with masks?

Just to be clear from the start I absolutely have face masks and I have been wearing them on the handful of occasions I have been to the shop. I do understand that wearing one is more important than my discomfort.

However. Going around the shop today I literally had to wipe my glasses every time I breathed, I think it was worse today because of the colder wet weather. I cannot see without my glasses. I basically went around the shop intermittently hold my breath for as long as possible to minimise the number of times I was touching my face to remove and wipe my glasses because we aren’t supposed to touch our faces but when I didn’t wipe them I actually walked straight into another persons trolley.

Now quite obviously it MUST be possible to avoid this issue because how else would doctors and nurses manage? So it must be possible but I even brought some spray which apparently is anti fog but it did nothing.

Has anyone else found a solution to this? AIBU to wonder how the medical profession do it and ask them to share their wisdom?

wear varifocals and tucking the mask under impacts my field of vision

I wear varifocals too , I don't notice any effect on my field.of.vision.

bumblingbovine49 · 27/07/2020 20:16

@NameChange84

Surgical mask with a wire over the nose squeezed tightly to bridge of the nose, double looped round the ears. Glasses resting slightly in front of wire. Zero problems.
Yes explained much better than I did
BakewellTarts · 27/07/2020 20:19

@paniquer

Got this from my sister.

I can't gert my glasses to stay fogg free whatever. Still wearing a mask as required but just minimising the times I need to by switching to online wherever possible and deferring anything non essential.

AnyFucker · 27/07/2020 20:20

Spending a fortune on daily contact lenses

Micropore tape over the nose and beneath eyes. Hope you don't get a red raw skin reaction to the tape

ComDummings · 27/07/2020 20:22

Honestly if any of you don’t have a wire mask surgical/medical tape is fab. You can keep it in your bag and just rip a bit off when you need and barely need to touch your masks to secure it. I was getting quite upset with the fogging the other day (I have very bad eyesight so not being able to see properly as well as feeling like my breathing was a little restricted made me panic slightly) so the medical tape has been so helpful.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/07/2020 20:29

Glasses wearer here. It’s not that hard once you fit it properly.

isitorisntit · 27/07/2020 20:29

Sorry, but your post made me chuckle. I know the struggle is real, though.

Today I went into a shop that normally supplies tradesmen so not busy. They had 2 stations at opposite sides of the shop to order/pay and perspex between the staff and customers. Plus a 1-way system. Big signs said 'no mask, no entry (you can buy a mask for 50p)'. It was really well organised (except for the fact that I had to go in as they don't answer the phone).

The older chap who served me got to his counter and put on a dispossible mask. His glasses immediately steamed up. 'Ridiculous rule' he grumbled, pulling the mask below his nose and wiping his glasses...

Anyways, it also reminded me of the time the pharmacy dispenser coughed into a gloved hand and handed me my meds...

Only helpful if used properly!

TinkersRucksack · 27/07/2020 20:32

Steaming up is only half the story. I wear varifocals so placing them on top of the mask means I can't actually see straight

maybelou · 27/07/2020 20:33

I've been wearing my glasses quite far down the end of my nose which seems to do the trick! I have to walk around with my head tipped up a bit so I'm sure I look like a right idiot but at least I can see 😂

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 27/07/2020 20:51

Thread a pipe cleaner through the top of your mask, you can then bend it to fit your nose better. Also mask quite high up so glasses sit on top of mask.

Sennetti · 27/07/2020 20:56

are these ideas lasting your whole shopping trip?

huuskymam · 27/07/2020 20:59

I put a bit of shaving foam on the lenses, let it dry then polish. Works perfectly.

Home42 · 27/07/2020 21:01

Use a bit of micro pore tape along the top of the mask under your eyes. It stops the moist air coming up under your glasses (from a glasses wearer who wears masks for their job).

ThisAintNoPartyThisAintNoDisco · 27/07/2020 21:02

I found the strip of folded up tissue across your nose does work but it can move out of position and fall down 🙄

rc22 · 27/07/2020 21:03

I make sure the mask is fitted really well to my nose then put the glasses on top.

Piper1879 · 27/07/2020 22:13

A bit of tape on your nose or a tissue under the mask OP. Please if your lenses are coated don't put anything on them like washing up liquid it strips the coating off them.

goose1964 · 27/07/2020 22:27

my mask is only shaped on one edge, I use that for my chin and the flat side over my chin, no fog. If I wear it the other way i t dogs up.

gallbladderpain · 27/07/2020 22:30

I have masks with a nose wire and I also got an anti fog cloth for glasses and it really works ! You breathe on the lens then wipe with the cloth and that's it done anti fog....whenever you breathe on the lens again afterwards they don't steam anymore ! I'm not sure how often you have to do it because I don't be out with mask on very often but every time I have it's lasted the entire time I've been out with the mask on if I just wipe them with the cloth before I go !
Its a game changer !

Angrywife · 27/07/2020 22:33

I've got a cotton mask with a metal nose piece and not had any issues with fogging

Voice0fReason · 27/07/2020 23:06

I don't have any special coating on my glasses, I've always used washing up liquid on them - works brilliantly. Been doing it for many, many years.

And I got a pack of self-adhesive strips to stick onto masks - they are well worthwhile getting.

ConfusedDotCom123 · 27/07/2020 23:20

Put a piece of tissue folded into a third and line the top of you nose with it under the mask and it will suck out all moisture and won’t obstruct breathing.

Google it there is tutorials online

I only wear the ones with wire on the top, makes no difference at all.
Will try rainex.

42andcounting · 28/07/2020 10:27

Nose wire, kitchen towel filter layer inside a fabric mask, and twist the loops around in a figure eight before you put them over your ears, all of these help. However the best thing I've found is consciously breathing through your nose, rather than your mouth. It seems to dissipate the moisture back into the mask.

Potionqueen · 28/07/2020 11:14

I’ve given up.

I wear varifocals and over the ear hearing aids. I am in danger of losing the glasses or the hearing aids or both.
Dh suggested one of the old type of deep sea diving helmets!!!
