to use a potty in the park?

My 29 month old is a month into potty training. When he tells me 'weewee' I grab the potty from under the pram and let him use it. Is this ok?

I empty into a bush out of sight etc. Whole process takes about 20 seconds probably!

Your child is two. Stop counting in months. My son pulled his pants down in the park and when I asked what he was doing he said ‘I’m pooping’ So in my experience a potty is a very good idea!

@Vole3 you can get a disabled key if can't use normal toilets, I have to because of an issue but also the peadiatrician and camhs has said I must use disabled toilet with him in future due to his meltdowns especially after him nearly breaking my arm in a door during one. Safer to restrain in disabled toilets as more room. My friend uses them for her little girl because shes also effected very badly by hand drier.

Vole3 · 28/07/2020 19:08

Thank you for your suggestion. He’s now 13 and he gradually grew out of that particular issue

FelicisNox · 28/07/2020 19:13

If it's for wees only I see no issue.

Generally toddlers want to wee within half an hour of drinking and a poo within an hour of eating (like puppies).

A good rule of thumb to go by. Just take a bottle of water to swish it away.

wildchild554 · 28/07/2020 19:13

@Vole3 no problem just wish I could of given you the info when it could have helped lol

SleepingStandingUp · 28/07/2020 19:19

Given that it's acceptable for dogs to wee on the ground, or poo and it be picked up, I'm not going to give much thought to a kid it in a potty so long as you dispose of any solids appropriately. Not OK for a 14 or a 40 yo to do it, but fine at this age

VK456 · 28/07/2020 19:24

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if I saw you. I’d be more likely to think how well prepared you were!

Mine had one like this. Actually searched for that because it’s been years since mine were potty trained and didn’t know if they still made them. Legs fold under so they’re flat and mine came with a bag for it to go in so it wasn’t exactly something to ‘lug about’ the way some posters are suggesting Hmm. You’re always going to find people (especially on MN!) who say ‘what’s the point?’ ‘just let them go anywhere’ ‘mine went from nappies to the toilet with no inbetween’ etc etc and that’s fine, but for those who don’t fit into those, then yeah, a potty is fine. I, and the vast majority of parents, wouldn’t think twice if they saw your kid sat on a potty, portable or otherwise, in a park.

WhoLettheCatOut · 28/07/2020 19:27

I don't think it's a problem for wees. I have 2 boys and would let them wee when out. On hols I take a toilet seat to make it easier but I don't think I could be bothered to carry a potty, I just took them behind a busy or tree!

Thefaceofboe · 28/07/2020 19:44

Some of the comments on here are SO rude. I thought mums were supposed to support other mums?I work in a toddler room and we take 3, YES 3, pottys out into the garden in case one needs a wee, SHOCK HORROR

Thefaceofboe · 28/07/2020 19:46

Oh and the toddlers range between 24 months and 36 months Grin

kazlau · 28/07/2020 19:52

My daughter keeps a potty in her boot. 2.5 year old loves having a boot potty wee. She has potty liners that contain any mess. Caught short outside she enlist my granny skills to help her have a wee out of sight.

Violinist64 · 28/07/2020 19:55

I cannot see what the problem is. My children are grownup now but when they were little we, and all the other parents we knew, took potties when we were out and about. It's common sense. At the seaside a bucket made a very good substitute potty and the children thought it was a wonderful novelty.

SantaClaritaDiet · 28/07/2020 19:57

There was a thread recently where adults posters even used their kids potette Grin

It's not recommended, the bags are a bit small for an adult use apparently!

Harvestsquirrel1 · 28/07/2020 20:02

Not a problem. We had a travel potty just in case. I lined it with a plastic bag, and set it in the back of our minivan. Lots of privacy. I would then dispose of the bag at home.

33goingon64 · 28/07/2020 20:15

Whatever works for you is fine. Don't worry. The odd wee in a park whether against a tree or in a potty wouldn't raise any eyebrows round here (nice 'middle class' village).

midnightstar66 · 28/07/2020 20:26

DD’s both went straight to toilet so I never did this. I do find it odd when people whip out a potty, what’re on earth do you fit it among everything else you have to carry or pile in a buggy? It’s also not very private for them sitting and seeing in a park surrounded by people. A tree or bush at least would be a bit more discreet. I guess if we were going to be out for hours with potentially no toilet access I might have put a pull up on for accidents But don’t remember it ever being an issue. Mine were both 2 as well - or 23 and 25 months if you want precision 😆

Gillian1980 · 28/07/2020 20:26

Yanbu.

My daughter struggled with potty training and at nearly 5 she still gets caught short sometimes. I have been known to whip a potty out, hold her over a drain or take her behind a bush.

No toilets in our local park and if she needs to go then I’d sooner do it somewhere discreetly than let her wet herself.

Lucky2Be · 28/07/2020 20:45

Honestly, some of the "perfect" parents on here. Like STFU. 😂

Nothing wrong with using a potty in the park as long as you dispose of the poo properly.

ThePants999 · 28/07/2020 20:49

Personally I would wait until he's at least 920 days old before going out without nappies.

midnightstar66 · 28/07/2020 20:57

No one is being a perfect parent! OP asked both opinion and what people did who didn't use potties and they answered. I've genuinely never seen a child use a potty in the park and I've spent hours upon hours in them in the last 10 years so it can't be that common and there are clearly other alternatives.

Loopylou23 · 28/07/2020 21:15

Gosh no wonder people complain about mumsnet. People are such arseholes!! Some of the comments about you saying 29 months and how disgusting carrying a potty around is! Your poor child is only 2.5 years old! Christ alive I will never be asking for any advice on here.

1Blue1 · 28/07/2020 21:17

I have a Travel potty in the car and they have used that sat in the boot or we do wild wee’s in a discrete bush! If it’s fine for dogs it’s fine for toddlers! We live quite rural so lots of our walks with wild wee’s!

Thefaceofboe · 28/07/2020 21:21

@midnightstar66 even the parents who have said her child should be able to hold his wee by now? Because there child can hold their wee Hmm god forbid children are... different!!
