to use a potty in the park?

My 29 month old is a month into potty training. When he tells me 'weewee' I grab the potty from under the pram and let him use it. Is this ok?

I empty into a bush out of sight etc. Whole process takes about 20 seconds probably!

@SantaClaritaDiet

No restrictions at all. Limited water intake Confused

I am not sure you understand what the word "restriction" actually means....

Enlighten me Grin
MissMaple82 · 27/07/2020 23:02

Of course it's ok, I still to this day have to take my 4 year old for a wee in a bush whilst on walks. Anybody who thinks it's not ok is just plain odd!

copperoliver · 27/07/2020 23:10

I bring mine. X

pigsDOfly · 27/07/2020 23:10

It's very interesting to read some of the responses on here: I never had to take a potty with me, my child of 2 could control their bladder until we walked to the nearest public loo 3 miles away, your child should be doing the same; the implication being that if they don't you're a failure as a potty trainer of small children.

I have to wonder if some of the judgemental posters have ever posted about their MIL, it's usually the MIL, telling them how 'in my day we did things differently' and how annoying it is?

I imagine a great many of the posters on here are going to be doing exactly that when, and if, they become MILs and are going to make their poor DILs' lives hell with the unwanted advice about how things 'should' be done, and how they know best.

Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 23:14

Where doesn't have public toilets? Apart from the middle of the countryside?

nitsandwormsdodger · 27/07/2020 23:17

Personally I never used a potty just held son in bushes and gutters and behind a dustbin once ( washed down with splosh of water , once on side of motor way in massive jam
Try to go as far away from people as possible, obviously no where near anyone who is eating
If anyone sees they fall into two categories

  1. Understanding as they have done the same
  2. Tut tutters who have not potty trained kids or somehow never got caught short with theirs
Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 23:17

This notion that it's horribly "restricting" to leave home with your toddler without bringing a potty with you is downright weird.
If by restricting you mean not allowed to wee in Tesco's freezer aisle, then yes, maybe.

Boshmama · 27/07/2020 23:21

I'm potty training my 20 month old at the moment (day three! Please tell me it gets easier!) And planning to go out tomorrow to the park. I'm taking her travel potty as she can only hold it for couple of mins when she needs to go and I have no idea if the loos are open at the park and if she's use them if so.

I wouldn't blink at a parent getting potty out for their child, I cant believe some of the responses on here and it's made me worry quite a lot about getting through the next few weeks. Maybe o just need to stay in for another month?!

pigsDOfly · 27/07/2020 23:47

Boshmama I wouldn't worry, if I were you. Most people in the real world are far more sensible about things like potty training than some of the 'perfect' posters on MN.

Some of us had/have small children who weren't potty trained in a day at the age of 9 months.

Porcupineinwaiting · 28/07/2020 00:16

When mine were two I was lucky to get a minute and a half's grace be them telling me they needed the loo and wet pants (or worse). We carried a potty. Wink

Porcupineinwaiting · 28/07/2020 00:21

And I love the idea that dogs pissing and cramping in public is fine but the sight of a toddler on a potty is somehow offensive.

Lancrelady80 · 28/07/2020 00:36

@Thisismytimetoshine

Most villages for starters. Nearest public loos to us are 8 miles away and currently shut. Nearest shop with loos also 8 miles away. We're not stuck out in the sticks but are country.
Siameasy · 28/07/2020 00:37

People are so ridiculous about urine. Loads of little kids wee in our local park. The grass may well be grateful! My DD(5) and her cousin (nearly 4) love a wild wee. They run around in the hot playground, guzzle loads of water GUESS WHAT THEY NEED A WEE!!!!
Nothing wrong with your potty activities I did the same when DD was that age.

pigsDOfly · 28/07/2020 00:54

There are no loos in any of the parks in my small town, open or closed.

The nearest loo to the park I usually take my dog to is far too far to walk if you need a wee, whether you're a child or an adult.

Nobody looks askance when my dog, or anyone else's dog come to that, wees in the park so I don't see why a small child can't wee in the park as well.

garfieldrec · 28/07/2020 06:33

@Ineedcoffee2345

Yeah, the middle of the countryside, oh, and literally everywhere around here at the moment. Indeed all the recs with swings don't even have toilets.

Wimbledon area, you can look it up yourself

I absolutely can’t see anything wrong with a young toddler using a potty. Surely it’s better than having an accident? 2 of my 4 needed potties taking out with us when training......for quite a while actually.

ItWasNotOK · 28/07/2020 06:39

"Where doesn't have public toilets? Apart from the middle of the countryside?"

LOADS of places. Our town hasn't had public toilets in about 20 years.

alphabetsoup1980 · 28/07/2020 06:43

Most public toilets are closed though?

alphabetsoup1980 · 28/07/2020 06:44

Most public toilets are still closed! Absolutely fine to take your own potty. The travel ones are great so maybe invest in one of those? It turns the wee into gel and you can dispose of easily 😊😊

zigzagbetty · 28/07/2020 06:48

@FourPlasticRings

We have a pop up tent in the pram with the potty and I'd just stick the potty in there in theory. In practice, she's never needed it because I always make sure she goes on the potty just before we leave the house. If out with the car, I set the potty up in the boot and she uses it in there. She likes privacy when she is peeing.
This made me laugh, my dd is the same but didn't thunk of bringing a tent Grin we've had a few boot wees though!

Some of the responses on here are ridiculous. All children are different with potty training. Its taken my dd over 6 months to finally be sorted with wees and we took a potty out with us at first If I knew there would be no handy toilets. None of the parks by us have toilets, especially at the moment with cafes still shut. OP crack on using that potty! Whatever works for you!

godsowncountry · 28/07/2020 06:55

I draw the line at supermarkets and the likes, but potty in the park is fine -I think a lot of these posters are genuinely nuts.

I've just potty trained mine at a similar age. We're farmers so everywhere is in the middle of nowhere. He was keen to perfect the standing wee like daddy which has made things loads easier but fucked if I'm going to be panic searching a loo when he needs a wee.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 28/07/2020 06:58

I think it’s fine. Especially in the current climate where (if you live near me anyway!) the public toilets STILL aren’t open! 😫

sleepingpup · 28/07/2020 08:34

Tbh even if everywhere had public loos ( which they don't - can't believe anyone thinks that )

If you've got a baby in a pram say and a toddler ( which I had ) the last thing I'd be doing would be wrestling us all into the grubby and very dubious council run toilets ( at speed )

Where are all these clean and available loos? That's a joke surely?

AllMyGreggsInOneBasket · 28/07/2020 08:58

The potettes are ace - the other week 3yo DD decides she needs a wee as we left the carpark of a NT property, she’d had one 10 mins previously but had had a lot to drink. We pulled over for a quick boot wee and job done. I wasn’t going to let her try hold it for the 25 min journey home, or toil back up the hill to the NT property toilets - they’re ideal.
