To report someone returning from Spain

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 13:08

A friend of my partner has said he has no intention of isolating on his return from Spain. Should I anonymously report them? My mum was on the shielding list and it’s making me quite angry. People who went abroad would know the risks during all of this....and then to refuse to isolate shows such arrogance and disregard for others.

I don’t know this person well and I don’t want to make my partner feel stuck in the middle.

I can only assume that all those that advocate keeping quiet and doing nothing, will be quite happy when the second wave hits us, perhaps it is even worse than the first, all because YOU decided you were above the law and guidance.

The health and economic consequences will be so severe because someone somewhere decided they 'needed' a holiday overseas, and will not follow the guidance on their return, and no one had the courage to report them.
Slow clap for you. Well done, when the next wave hits I will be holding this type of person directly responsible. Make no mistake. They will become pariahs, because we will all know that this kind of shoddy selfish behaviour will contribute to thousands more deaths, no doubt they will bleat that the quarantine guidance is 'wrong' or does not apply to them for some made up reason, but we will all know the truth.

NewNewt · 27/07/2020 17:12

@Archie1989 you're welcome . As usual, you have to critically evaluate risk. The risk of people not wearing masks and not sanitising their hands at home is a far greater risk for transmission of the virus imo than people travelling through airports and on planes, which will be the cleanest, most sanitized, most scrutinized places they could be at this time - unlike my local Tesco, which seems to have given up, and all the smug people proudly staycationing but now going to local pubs/restaurants and gyms, without masks, where this is nothing in place whatsoever apart from a bit of distance and a few windows open!

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 17:13

@GreytExpectations that was a joke. Maybe that didn’t come through in this format

Here we go. Why are people so fixated on this mythical second wave?

Hmm sure it was. In no way would you be back tracking because of the negative responses you got Hmm

Toothsil · 27/07/2020 17:15

I'm would. MIL has just told DH had his sister is still going on holiday to Spain and she has absolutely no intention of isolating on her return, despite the fact that she and her DH are both working from home. Their attitude is how would anyone know and why should they isolate 🤦🏼‍♀️

MaxNormal · 27/07/2020 17:16

But to be honest, seriously, it’s a short time of pulling together. Making some sacrifices

Short time? I could weep at that.

Lweji · 27/07/2020 17:16

Be real.
Sars-cov-2 is in the UK.
People should behave towards others as if they could have it, regardless.
There won't be a second wave because one person took the virus from Spain or Blackburn.
If there's a second wave in the UK, it will be exactly for the same reasons as the first. Lack of preparedness, lack of enough test and trace, lack of good safety measures in the community and complacency by the government.

madbirdlady22 · 27/07/2020 17:16

As usual, you have to critically evaluate risk

No you don't 'evaluate' risk Archie, that is what SAGE are qualified to do, not you!!!!!

All YOU have to do is follow the actual law and guidance! Confused

It is not down to you to decide what does or does not apply to you when you have the capacity to kill many innocent people with your poor choices.

If they’re working from home, surely they’re virtually isolating anyway?
PhilCornwall1 · 27/07/2020 17:18

if you ask me to forfeit my livelihood and in turn my ability to feed, house and cloth my child for the sake of one death, no I’m not prepared to do it!

You will be called all sorts for saying that, but I agree completely with what you've said. There is absolutely no way I would put people I don't know over and above the welfare of my family.

Lweji · 27/07/2020 17:19

All YOU have to do is follow the actual law and guidance! confused

That actually worked quite well for the UK, didn't it? Grin

DomDoesWotHeWants · 27/07/2020 17:20

Here we go. Why are people so fixated on this mythical second wave?

Because people who know better than unqualified random people on mumsnet say it's a very real possibility.

I believe the science. And most in the know say it's very likely. But some unqualified users of mumsnet say not.

Who to believe?

Hmm.

This second wave is taking its time to arrive, how many times has it supposed to have swept the country? Your level of bitterness and vitriol is unpleasant and deeply disturbing.
Coronabegone · 27/07/2020 17:20

@Archie1989 why be so cowardly to do it anonymously? Make sure you tell your partner as it's his friend, I'd be well pissed off with you doing that to one of my friends.

Be prepared that your partner may not take it well..

MaxNormal · 27/07/2020 17:20

All YOU have to do is follow the actual law and guidance!

The law that allows people to self-exempt from wearing masks? That particular law doesn't seem to suit, funnily enough.

NewNewt · 27/07/2020 17:21

@Archie1989 Thank you for the sympathy, appreciate it x

As somebody said on this thread (or maybe it was one of the others on the subject), they are unable to wear a mask for extremely valid reasons but they have never told their GP about it so even if there was a government exemption in place they wouldn't be able to access it.

Oh come on! This is the weakest excuse I've heard yet! Anyone with a medical condition that genuinely prevented them from wearing a mask would have a moderate to severe illness or medical condition (like the poor poster on here that has a facial nerve condition) and would have that all over their notes already for sure! Even if they had somehow managed to get to adulthood with severe asthma but having never seen a GP, got all their inhalers on the black market and never troubled the asthma clinic then there would be nothing stopping them making a GP appointment over the phone to discuss it. Sadly the government forgot that part so it would be pointless anyway. There are some voluntary schemes now for downloading lanyards etc at least.

If people in taxis, planes, airports, Spain are wearing masks and following the SD guidelines then they are doing more than all the non-mask wearers.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 27/07/2020 17:22

There is absolutely no way I would put people I don't know over and above the welfare of my family.

Fortunately, it isn't people like you who get to decide.

madbirdlady22 · 27/07/2020 17:22

also

Oh it is a 'mythical' second wave? What like the first one that killed 45,000 people in this country and counting.

I think you will find the second wave is already here in Europe. Or maybe you missed that update.

But hey you keep kidding yourself it is all fine, holiday time - Jesus christ. If this thread is anything to go by, we are going to be in real trouble when cases start to spike here again. It is very worrying.

tooth report to the local police, and let them deal with it.

Lweji · 27/07/2020 17:22

@MzHz

Spending any more time at all with these awful curtain twitching fake doom mongers is enough to make ANYONE want to leave the country

@Lweji, please tell me that your country of residence doesn’t have this level of idiocy?

Not that I've noticed. But there are other levels. Grin
Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 17:23

@PhilCornwall1 and @OnlyFoolsnMothers I understand not risking your livelihood and it impacting your families. I get that. But risking someone’s life because you chose to go on holiday and won’t isolate, as per government guidance? Wow

OP posts:
Sugarplumfairy65 · 27/07/2020 17:23

I've reached a point now where I'm tired of all the low risk people (including millions of children who are being damaged by this) being expected to isolate "to protect the vulnerable". Why cant we flip this round and have the vulnerable isolate to protect themselves.

You have to be fucking joking right?
The extremely clinically vulnerable have been isolating since mid March. The only times I've left my home has been to go to necessary medical appointments. Shielding ends this coming weekend. We have to go back to work, back to the supermarket etc. Yet you think we should have to continue to do that because of selfish fucks who want to go on holiday, want to go down the pub, want to go to football matches etc.

madbirdlady22 · 27/07/2020 17:25

this the only thing that is deeply disturbing are the numbers of people on here that do not seem to realise how truly fucked we are going to be if Covid spirals out of control again!

Mydogisthebestest · 27/07/2020 17:25

The person hasn’t actually done anything yet have they?

PhilCornwall1 · 27/07/2020 17:25

Because people who know better than unqualified random people on mumsnet say it's a very real possibility.

Many things are a possibility. You, I, anyone could die tonight, in 5 minutes time, or tomorrow. You don't know, nobody knows, but it's a possibility.

What do you do, stop living, put everything on hold?
